Church and fellowship cannot be more spiritual than the individuals and families that constitute them. God always desires a godly home. These are words of restoration and instruction in righteousness on Family Tent Ministry. May you be blessed as you listen.
[Singers]
In the Lord, with all my heart. Praising the Lord with all my heart, always. Hallelujah, my Lord is good. Hallelujah, my Lord is good. Hallelujah, my Lord is good. He is good to me. Oh, I will enter his gates with thanksgiving in my heart. I will enter his courts with praise. I will say this is the day that the Lord has made. I will rejoice for he has made me glad. He has made me glad. He has made me glad and I am so glad. I will rejoice for he has made me glad. He has made me glad. He has made me glad and I am so glad. I will rejoice for he has made me glad.

We want to thank our God again for this opportunity to gather this day. We thank him for his mercies. We thank him for his privilege. We thank him for his goodness. We thank him for his grace. We thank him. We bless his holy name. Honestly, our God is good. And as we gather for him again this evening for our discipleship class, I trust the Lord. Brethren who are joining us on Mixlr, brethren joining us on Telegram, our brethren who are gathering physically, I want to say you are all welcome. And as we fellowship together, we say it will be a time of refreshment. It will be a time of blessing. It will be a time of meeting again with the Lord in the name of Jesus Christ.
Let us have a word of prayer as we press on again today from where we left the matter last week. Don't forget our focus is a continuation on "A New Commandment I Give Unto You." Let us have a word of prayer.
Everlasting Father, we are grateful. We thank you, our God, for this privilege of gathering again. The scripture says unto you shall the gathering of your people be. Lord, it is unto you that we are gathering this evening. Lord, we are asking that you will meet with each and every one of us at the point of our needs in the name of Jesus. Lord, Lord, Lord, give light to our darkness. Lord, Lord, let your light shine into every darkness that may be in our lives. That we may walk in the light of life and not in the darkness of self, of sin, of the world, or of the devil in the name of Jesus. Grant us light, oh God. Grant us light. Grant us light, the light of your will, the light of your purpose, the light of your intentions for our lives. Lord, grant us light. Let there be light in the name of Jesus. Thank you, Eternal Father. Glory be to your name. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen.
Last week we began to look at this matter of a new commandment I give unto you. We were looking at that from the book of **John**, the gospel according to **John chapter 13**, where Jesus, speaking with his disciples, made reference to this instruction. We saw that in the book of **John** from **verse 31**. The Bible says, "So when he had gone out, that is Judas Iscariot who was to betray him, Jesus said, 'Now the Son of Man is glorified, and God is glorified in him. And if God is glorified in him, God will also glorify him in himself and glorify him immediately.'" The glorification he was talking about in this place, this glorification is a reference to his death because he had said, "And I, if I be lifted up, I will draw men unto myself."
That death of Jesus, that suffering death and his resurrection is the glorification of Jesus Christ. That was his glorification. So he knew that immediately Judas left, the whole chain of events that will lead to his suffering, his death, and his resurrection had already started. So he said, "And he will glorify him immediately." And then he moved on to say, "Little children, I shall be with you a little while longer. You will seek me, and as I said to the Jews, 'Where I am going, you cannot come,' so now I say to you: A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another."
It was from this verse that we took our topic for last week and for this week's discipleship class: A new commandment I give to you. He said, "A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another as I have loved you, that you also love one another. By this, all will know that you are my disciples if you have love one for another." Simon Peter said to him, "Lord, where are you going?" Jesus answered him, "Where I am going, you cannot follow me now, but you will follow me afterward." But Peter said to him, "Lord, why can't I follow you now? I will lay down my life for your sake." Jesus answered him, "Will you lay down your life for my sake? Most assuredly I say to you, the rooster will not crow till you have denied me three times."
Last week we took time to look at the background that led to that commandment. Jesus was about to die, and knowing that very soon he would be taken away from his disciples, he gave that new commandment. We also noted last week that very importantly, Jesus was so much in control of the situation. He knew how things were going on. And we instructed ourselves that we must grow in our walk with God such that we have awareness of things.
And then we told ourselves last week that it is very, very important for us as believers to know that this matter of the new commandment I am giving unto you should be related to the earlier things that Jesus said. At a point, Jesus was asked, "Master, tell us which is the greatest commandment?" And Jesus said, "The greatest commandment is that a man should love the Lord his God with all his heart, with all his soul, and with all his might. And the second is like unto it, that he should love his neighbor as himself." He said, "On these two hang the whole law and the prophets."
Now we made it clear that yes, the first and the foremost commandment is for a man to love the Lord, is to come into the kingdom, come into the kingdom. Love the Lord your God, submit your life to him, walk with him, know this God, know this God, yield yourself to him. And then there is the need to see the second that is like unto it, which is to love your neighbor as yourself. And we stated very clearly last week. Now when the Lord Jesus said we should love our neighbor as ourselves, he is only helping us to know, to measure the standard of wickedness and evil from self-love. That anytime you do to people whatever you do not pray they do to you, whatever you do not pray that they do to you, then you are a wicked person, you are an evil person.
One way to measure, to understand fairness, justice, faithfulness, righteousness is to consistently do to people only those things you pray should be done to you. We said this is so crucial for us to know that many of us as Christians, we have not even climbed this ladder. Because many times you find us as Christians doing to people what we do not pray should be done to us. Acting one way or the other, doing things intentionally and deliberately against people that we do not pray should be done to us. And we said this because at the point of Jesus leaving, he gave something higher, which is what we are considering. And this something higher is actually for disciples indeed. The people who are disciples indeed.
One thing, one way or one hallmark of understanding the depth of your walk with God is to look at this new commandment. He said, "A new commandment I give to you. You need to go beyond loving your neighbor as yourself. You need to climb yet another ladder that is higher." This ladder is that you love the brotherhood. We love one another as Christians as Jesus had loved, as Jesus loved us. He said, "I give you a new commandment." What is this new commandment? He said, "This new commandment is that you love one another." This new commandment is a deeper or a higher walk than the one that the Lord gave. Under the law, men are to love their neighbors as themselves. In the kingdom, believers are to go beyond that. Believers are to love one another as Jesus loved them. And that is what we want to dwell on today.
What is the meaning of this? We have looked at the whole background last week. Please, I want to beg you, if you did not follow us last week, either on Telegram or Mixlr, and you have not gone to the website to download the message to listen to, I will plead with you that you find a way to listen to the episode one of this message. This episode two is focused on trying to understand the implication of that commandment. What does this mean when the Lord said, "A new commandment I give to you, that you should love one another as I have loved you?" What does it mean? And what are the attendant consequences of this commandment? Because you notice that immediately he made that statement, in the **verse 35** he said, "By this, all will know that you are my disciples if you love one another."
By this, all will know that you are my disciples if you love one another. I want to begin like this. That I want you to realize from what the Lord is saying in these two verses that the proof, what makes men to know that we are his disciples, is not some of the things that we think today. It is not necessarily things that have to do with power, miracle, signs, wonders. It is not necessarily by these things that the world will know who are the disciples of Jesus. However, I want you to also note that the Lord said at some point, "These people will not believe except by signs and wonders." That is, they will not believe in the power of God, they will not come to reconciliation with God except by signs and wonders.
But when it comes to knowing who are the true worshippers of God, when it comes to knowing who are, how do we know the disciples of Jesus? The Lord Jesus said the way that this will happen, the way that this will happen is by you loving one another. You loving one another. Now he says, "A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another as I have loved you, that you also love one another." Now, see what I want you to see in this verse is that there are several ways to love the brethren. But the only way that is acceptable to the Lord is that you love the brethren the way the Lord loved us. The Lord was giving us what is the criterion to measure whether your love for the brethren is the correct one or is the wrong one.
You may choose to do anything you like. You may choose to behave the way you want. You may choose to act as you so feel. You may choose to decide how you want to love the brethren. However, you need to realize that there is a standard in the sanctuary. And the standard is not arbitrary. The standard is not something you decide. The standard is not something I can decide. The standard has been decided. While there are several ways to act towards the brotherhood, there are several ways to behave towards the brethren, it is important to note that there is an acceptable way to love the brethren. And the acceptable way to love the brethren is not just to love them as yourself. That one has to do with the law. We have a higher standard, we have a new standard. And saying higher, even though he said, "I give you a new commandment," because this new one is actually higher.
That when you want to love the brethren, when you want to demonstrate love to the brethren, a love that can make the world know that you belong to Jesus. The one that can make all, I love the way the Lord said all. Let me read that **verse 35** in other translations. It says, "Your love for one another will prove to the world that you are my disciples." That is NLT. NIV: "By this all men will know that you are my disciples." The Message: "This is how everyone will recognize that you are my disciples, when they see the love you have for each other." Amplified: "By this shall all men know that you are my disciples, if you love one another, if you keep on showing love among yourselves."
Now, it moves me that when Jesus was about to die, it became very important to him to leave this new commandment. And he was leaving this new commandment on the basis that his desire is that the world should know who his disciples are. His desire is that the world should recognize, they should recognize his disciples. They should be able to say, "Ah! You see these people? You see these people they call disciples of Jesus? It is not difficult to know them. It is not difficult. There is a way they all live. There is something about them. When you see that their group, there is something strange about that their group." What is strange about that their group is that the principle on which they operate is not anywhere except among them.
The kind of life they live is nothing we can find anywhere. We cannot find it anywhere. But there is this life that is among them. There is this love that is among them. And this is how their love is. They will now begin to demonstrate or describe or explain how we live our life loving each other. Now, how do we live our life loving each other that will shock the world, that will attract the world, that will make the world to say, "Ah! This group of people, they are Jesus's disciples. These people they belong to Jesus." Jesus said the kind of love that can prove that is when you love each other as I have loved you. And so brethren, our desire this evening, my burden this evening is: what does it mean to love the brotherhood as Jesus had loved us?
How do we love the brotherhood? How? Because that is the standard that is acceptable to the Lord. Any other way you choose to love the brethren, it is not acceptable. This is very, very crucial. So many things are happening around us today. So many things are happening today that if you are not careful, you will begin to determine how you want to love the brotherhood as against how you should love the brotherhood. Am I making sense to you at all? Are you taking cognizance of what I am saying? You see, so many things are happening around us. So many dust are flying around. So many incidents, they are taking place. And these incidents, you know what they are doing? They are telling you: "What is the essence of loving other people? What is the essence? Why should I love somebody? Why should I love this brother? Why should I love this sister? Why should I love this leader, this follower? Why?"
And why should I love him to this extent? And so many things are happening around us today that are—how will I call them?—they are pulling us, they are pulling us, telling us that, "Look, even if you want to love, don't love the way Jesus loved you. Don't love the way Jesus did it to you. If you do it that way, you are only a fool. If you do it that way, it will not work. If you do it that way, you are going to injure yourself. If you do it that way, you will be cheated. If you do it that way, you will lose out. The best way to do it is to—how will I put it now?—is to, yes, you need to love, but you need to be calculative about it. You need to bring in some other variables apart from the only variable. The only variable that should determine the love is how Jesus loved us."
But today, several other variables are coming in. That is what I am trying to say. Several other factors are considered. And so, loving the brotherhood is no more on the basis of what Jesus commanded. And many times, the reason why we act like this is because we want to save our life. It is because we want to—I am looking for the best way to put it—we want to be sure that we are also doing everything to secure—that is what may sound very reasonable to us. "Look, in loving the brotherhood, I need to secure my life." That does not sound anything foolish. It does not sound anything foolish. But we are considering a very important thing. Why it may not sound foolish when somebody says, "You see, in loving people, you better secure your life," that sounds very wise. But what I am trying to say is that if you are not examining yourself, if you are not very careful, you know what the Master said?
The Master said the person who seek to save his life will lose it. Am I making sense to you? He says the man who seek to save his life will lose it. He says but the person who loses his life for his sake will save it. Are you following me? You see, when we are not very, very careful, you will end up losing the life you think you are trying to secure. He said, "He who loses his life for my sake," he said the person will gain it. He said, "But he who seeks to save his life will lose it." And what does this mean for us? Let me now begin to explain. When the Bible says we should love as Jesus loved us, can we just take a quick consideration of the matter? Say love as Jesus loved us. Brethren, let us be practical and very simple about this matter.
If we are to ask ourselves how exactly is the love of Jesus? Number one, the love of Jesus, is it on the basis of our works? Of course, the answer is obvious no. None of us deserved to be loved because it says not by our works. Not by our works. We did not work for it. We did not merit it. I am talking about that Jesus said the only way to love that is acceptable to me among you is to love one another as he loved us. Any other kind of love you display, they are not acceptable. And we are trying to look at it very quickly. We all know that none of us merit the love of Jesus. Have you considered something about your life? That your love, your deep concern for people, your deep concern for people only goes to those who merit it in your life.
Have you checked that about your life? Have you checked deeply? Have you examined yourself to see that when it comes to deep concern for people, when it comes to genuine concern for people, it is only circled around those you judge to merit it? The love, your love for the brethren is not a free love. Jesus loved us freely. Your love is not free. Your love must be earned. Your love must be worked for. And if that brother, that sister do not work for it, they cannot get it. Your genuine and deliberate concern for the brethren do not come until they earn it. Is that the kind of life that you are living? It is this kind of mentality that make husbands, many of us that are husbands that are listening to me, will make you say, "Since she does not submit to me, she will not get my love."
Is that the way you think as a man? "Since she does not give me what I want, since I give her instructions she will not take it, she will not get the best out of me." And so you reserve your best to yourself, waiting for when that woman you call your wife will earn your best. Can I announce to you? You are a godless man. You are a godless man. You don't know Jesus. Your depth in Jesus is very shallow. The same thing goes for many of us that are wives. "Since Jesus said husbands to love their wife and this man has not shown dedicated love to me, he will not get the best from me. He will not see the good, the very best of me. If he had loved me as yours, he would have seen a wonderful, he would have seen, he would have seen." You are only talking foolishness. You are a foolish woman. You are not a wise woman.
You don't understand the principles. You don't understand it. You are not getting it right. I am talking of when you look at the connectivity of believers today. You say you are the one who says it is a Christian marriage, and I am showing you what ought to be in a Christian marriage. Come again to among brethren relationship. Check your heart as a brother. Check your heart as a sister. Check your heart as a leader. Check your heart as a follower. How do you live? Is it not: "Since this follower is not giving his best to the fellowship, since this one is since not to be among those that bring fat offering. He doesn't seem to be among those that give the best to us. He should not get the best from us." How do you live as a follower? "Since this my leader I don't get the best out of him, since this my leader is this, is that, he cannot get the best out of me."
See what you don't understand is this: are you working for men or you are working for God? The reason why I'm saying these things is that we all need to go and examine our lives. We all need to go and ask the Lord to help us. Lord, please help our hearts. Lord, please help our hearts. Lord, please help our hearts. Let the light of your spirit shine into our hearts. Lord, Lord, let the light of your glory shine. Jesus, shine. Fill our hearts with your glory. Fill our hearts with your love. Fill our hearts with your light. Address our hearts, Lord Jesus. That your image and your likeness may be seen in us. Thank you, Eternal Father. Blessed be thy holy name. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen. He has not dealt with us according to our sins, nor punished us according to our iniquities.
But bro, my brother, my sister, what are you doing to his children? Are you not punishing them according to their iniquities? What are you doing to his children? When God is dealing with his children, he does not punish them according to their iniquities. He does not deal with them according to their sin. You, you are not as holy as God, and yet you have become the standard. You are dealing with his children according to their iniquities. You are dealing with his children according to their sin. And yet you want the Lord to love you. You want the Lord to be merciful to you. And the Lord says, "See, I have this commandment for you. You too go and love my children the way I have loved you. Go and replicate this thing among my children." I'm just speaking on one point on the matter. I want to pick on just about three points about the love of Jesus.
Brethren, it may be more than three. As I'm speaking now, the Lord Jesus will be showing you some things even different from what I'm talking about. As I'm speaking now, the Lord Jesus will be showing you seven, eight, nine points. As I'm speaking now, the Holy Spirit may be convicting you on several other things apart from what I'm talking about. And I pray that whichever one that actually applies to you, may the Lord come your way. May the Lord address your heart. May the Lord come your way. May the Lord address the one that relates to you even when we don't mention it. May the Holy Spirit come to you in the name of Jesus. But I'm just pointing on three areas that became a burden in my heart. But I know that nobody can exhaust God. It may happen that we close this meeting today and I say we are going to something else next week.
We may come next week now and I tell you that see, the Lord opened my eyes to another aspect. His judgment, they are past finding out. That is why my prayer is that: hear the voice of the Holy Spirit beyond my voice. May you hear the voice of Jesus beyond my voice. May you hear the voice of the Father. Everywhere you need God to lighten your darkness, may your darkness receive light in the name of Jesus. The second thing I'm calling your attention to is the meekness of Jesus. The meekness that is in Jesus. He said, "You love each other as I have loved you." The meekness that is in Jesus. The meekness that is in Jesus. We need to love each other as he has loved us. You know the Lord Jesus was speaking, he was speaking in **Matthew chapter 11 from verse 28 to verse 30**.
He said, "Come unto me, all ye that labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, learn from me, for I am meek and lowly in heart, and you shall find rest for your soul. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light." He said, "I am meek." The meekness of Jesus. The meekness of Jesus. "Love one another as I have loved you." And I want to show you how this thing came out very clearly. I'll just use the life of one of the disciples to point this out to us. Jesus at different point related with the disciples. And at a point, he told the Peter, James, John—you know he was going with the 12 to Gethsemane—and then he left nine at a point. And he took three to follow him.
And when he got to a point again, he left these three and then he went a little yonder. And he asked the three: "Pray for me for my soul is exceedingly heavy." Now when Jesus was going with 12 and he got to a spot, he left nine. Let's take it that those nine were not too—they were not too sure whether they will heart with him. So he took three. When he got to a spot, he told the three: "Be praying for me while I go a little further." He came back, he met the three sleeping. He said, "Ah, you are sleeping? You are sleeping? It is not time to sleep. It is time to watch and pray. Watch with me for how long. Watch with me, pray for me, pray with me." He came back again, he found them sleeping. He said, "For the spirit is willing but the flesh is weak."
You know what I'm trying to bring out of that incident? Even before I do that, let me just take the second incident. Where we read in **John chapter 13**, Peter said, "Lord, where are you going? Wherever you are going, I'm going to go with you and I'm going to die with you." The Lord Jesus said, "You say you will go with me? I tell you the truth, before the rooster crow, you would have denied me three times." If you look at that same matter in the book of **Luke**, you remember that Jesus spoke to Peter and he said, "Simon Peter, Satan desire to have you and to sift you. But I have prayed for you that your faith fail not. After you have been converted, strengthen the brethren." That matter went, and we know how everything went, how Peter denied the Lord and all of that went.
Of course, the Lord died. The third day, he resurrected. Mary Magdalene was at the tomb. He didn't find the body of—she didn't find the body of Jesus. She went to call Peter. Peter came to the tomb. Peter believed Mary Magdalene that the body had been stolen. He went back, and when of course they came back to tell him that, "Look, there's resurrection," he refused to believe. Their heart was hardened against what the women were saying. Then Simon Peter did something again. By the time he saw the way the whole program was running: "They have killed this man. This one that people again have stolen his body away. Is there reason to continue to hope in this man and continue with this man?" He said, "Brethren, brethren, me, I'm returning back to fishing."
This was Simon Peter that the Lord Jesus said, "I've prayed for you." This was Simon Peter that the Lord Jesus told, "Simon, Simon, you are Petrus, which means rock. On this rock, this revelation that you received, Christ Jesus, I'm going to build my church and the gate of hell will not prevail." After all those investment on Simon Peter, Simon Peter told the brethren, "Sorry brethren, I'm going to fish." When the Lord Jesus, after resurrection, he came to Peter where he was fishing. The man had tried, tried, tried, nothing was happening. Then he gave direction and they had a—there was a big catch. And when he had the big catch, he ran, he recognized and then he ran to Jesus. And then they were busy eating the fish together. Then Jesus said, "Simon, pele o. Simon Peter, do you love me more than eja, all of these fish?"
He said, "Lord, you know I love you." I want you to look at the incident of this man. He was the one that led disciples to leave the Lord and they came fishing. Look at how the Lord was handling the matter. All the Lord should have done should have been: "You useless fool! You idiot! After I—" You understand what I'm talking about? "I am meek, I am meek, I am meek." Meekness, meekness. I'm talking about meekness. Not being revengeful. Not full of vengeance. Deliberately, consciously arranging experience for the betterment of men who are hurting you. Deliberately doing things so that the brother who is hurting you can become a better brother. The sister who is, who is putting sword into your soul, you are deliberately acting and doing things that can make the brother or the sister to know Jesus better.
You are believing the Lord with the sister, with the brother, that this person can get better. You are acting in a way, you are putting experiences around the person, not seeking to revenge, not seeking to harm, but doing—but calculating everything with a desire to edify, to comfort, to minister grace to a life that is failing you. I'm talking about the meekness of Jesus. He said, "Love one another as I have loved you." "Simon Peter, pele o! Do you love me more than this?" "Lord, you know I love you. Lord, you know I love you." "Simon Peter, do you love me more than this?" Peter said, "Lord, you know I love you." He loved the Lord, he really loved the Lord. He loved the Lord with all that he has been doing. "Brethren, I go a-fishing." Threw away everything, went back to his trade. He really loved the Lord. And then the third time, "Simon Peter, do you love me more than this?" "Lord, you know I love you." "Feed my lamb. Feed my lamb. You have left the place of purpose. You have left the place of divine assignment. You have left where you ought to be."
And you keep doing this thing. At one point, you are the one who denied me. Now again, I have been crucified, quickly you have jumped back to fishing. That's not the place of your divine assignment. That's not the place of your divine purpose. Where you ought to be is the place of feeding the sheep, the place of feeding the lamb. I have raised you a shepherd. I have raised you a pastor. I've not raised you to come back to this. I'm trying to make you see how the Lord was with gentility, with meekness, bringing the erring servant back to the right path. May the Lord touch our hearts. May the Lord help his church. May the Lord grant revival. May the Lord bring awakening. May the Lord bring awakening. May there be brotherly love that is real. Brotherly love that is real. Brotherly love that is real. Brotherly love that is real in the name of Jesus.
[Speaker 1]
I'm just showing you the meekness of Jesus. He said, "I am meek. I am meek. I am meek. Go and love others. Go and do this kind of act to love the brotherhood. Go and love them this way. Go and follow after them this way. Go and do this thing. Go, be meek. Be meek." And I point something again about the love of Jesus. The third one that we are closing with today about the love of Jesus for us. He says, "Love one another as I have loved you." I want you to look at it. I want you to check it, brethren. Look at the love of Jesus for us. In that love, in that love, it is the offended that pay the price of reconciliation, not the offender.
In the love of Jesus in his loving us, we sinned. We did what was wrong. But in expressing his love for us, we are not the one who paid the price for the reconciliation that we have with him. He is the one who paid the price. He paid the price for the reconciliation. He said, "Love one another as I have loved you." Go and love one another. How do you relate with the brotherhood today? How? Since is the one who did it until he undo it, no relationship between me and him again. No relationship between me and her again. Is that the attitude? Is that the kind of love you have for the brotherhood? Since she is the one, since he is the one, since it was my wife that did it, since it is my husband that did that, since like that in many ways today. All those your "since" syndrome, may the Lord deliver you from them.
In the love of Jesus, the love that he loved us, we are not the one that paid the price for our reconciliation unto him. He is the one, out of his love for us, who paid the price for the relationship to be restored. He paid the price for the wall between we and him to be broken down. That wall of partition, that sword that the Lord placed that was going round the tree of life so that man don't have access to that tree again. It was Jesus that went to take the sword on himself so that we can have access again to the tree of life. Today we have life. We have the tree of life. He said, "I have come that they may have life, that they may have it abundantly." But who paid the price for that broken relationship? It was the offended. Brethren, as we close this evening, as we close this evening, I beg you: go and check inward. Go and check inward. Go and check inward. The scripture says: let him who think he stand, let him take heed lest he fall. Let us have a word of prayer.
Almighty God, we thank you again for this evening. We bless your name. Lord, Lord, Lord, we just present ourselves to you. And we say God, help our hearts. Lord, help our hearts. Amen.
