Lord, we trust in You for divine visitation. Let there be divine visitation for our lives in the name of Jesus. Thank You, Eternal Father. Blessed be Your name, our God. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen.
[Speaker 1]
Let's go ahead today straight to where we left the matter last week. We have been checking, going through the book of Galatians, and we have been looking at chapter 6 from verse 7. "Do not be deceived, God is not mocked, for whatever one sows, that will he also reap. For the one who sows to his own flesh will from the flesh reap corruption, but the one who sows to the spirit will from the spirit reap eternal life. And let us not be weary, let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we shall reap if we faint not."
Now, we have been looking at this text for some time now. And last week, we called our attention to why it is important for us, why we must do everything, why we must look up to God that we abound in goodness. Why should we abound in goodness? And we saw that the reason why you may not be abounding in goodness is because you lack a clear understanding that to this you are called to come and inherit a blessing. Anybody who does not capture that thing in his heart, who does not capture this truth in his heart, will not be able to abound in goodness.
And then we noticed something also very important: if actually you do good, nobody can do you evil. We said who can harm you if you be a follower of that which is good? We said the reason why we are discussing the matter of why it is important for us to abound in goodness is because anyhow you look at it, from whichever angle you may want to see it, it is clear, I mean very clear, that if you don't want to experience evil, don't allow anything to make you to do evil. Don't allow anything, whether good things, whether bad things, whether rough things, whether tempting things, whether non-tempting things, don't allow anything to make you not to abound in goodness because for any sow to the flesh that you do, you can be sure you are going to reap it. So, there's no justification for doing wrong. That's the point we made last week. There's no justification. You can't say because he did evil, that's why I'm doing evil. You will be punished for doing evil. So, there is no justification under heaven why we should not abound in goodness.
And I said today when we meet, we'll be trying to explore, trying to look very closely into the same scripture to learn what it means to sow to the flesh and what it means to sow to the spirit. Because what the Bible says is that "Do not be deceived, God cannot be mocked. Whatsoever a man sows, that he will reap. He who sows to the flesh will from the flesh reap corruption, but he who sows to the spirit will of the spirit reap eternal life." So, what we want to do today is trying to understand this matter of sowing to the flesh and sowing to the spirit. I want us to go again to that Galatians. Galatians chapter 5. Are you there? I want to take my reading from verse 10.
"I have confidence in the Lord that you will take no other view. And the one who is troubling you will bear the penalty, whoever he is. But if I, brother, still preach circumcision, why am I still being persecuted? In that case, the offense of the cross has been removed. I wish those who unsettled you would emasculate themselves! For you were called to freedom, brother. Only do not use your freedom as an opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one another. For the whole law is fulfilled in one word: you shall love your neighbor as yourself."
For the whole law is fulfilled in one word. What is the word? Check your Bible. What is the word? "You shall love your neighbor as yourself." The whole law is fulfilled in one word. It means, I'm looking at what our Lord Jesus Christ was saying when He said, "As you would that men do to you, what should you do? Do also to them. That is the summary of the law and the prophet." So, what the law and the prophet, what they were trying to say in everything they said is that do to people only what you pray, what you wish, what you desire should be done to you. Any time you do to people what you don't desire should be done to you, then your life has contradicted the law and the prophet. That is everything that they are trying to say.
Now, please look at another thing again in this place. It says, "For the whole law is fulfilled in one word: you shall love your neighbor as yourself." Are you getting something? Is this a repetition of what was said earlier? It is a repetition, an emphasis. So, the gospel, the Holy Spirit through this gospel written by Apostle Paul, is trying to make us see something very crucial: that the whole law—do not fornicate, do not lie, do not steal, do not commit adultery, do not this, do not that, just count those laws—how are they fulfilled? Inside one law. What is the one law? Love your neighbor as yourself.
Please be following something. We want to discover what it means to sow to the flesh and to sow to the spirit. That's where we are going. We want to properly understand how do we sow to the flesh? How do we sow to the spirit? Now, we are having an understanding from this place that there is something you must take note of, that the whole law is fulfilled in one commandment. So, when you put the moral law, the ordinances, and the judgment, when you put everything together, what is the one thing that carries all of them? "You shall love your neighbor as yourself." Good.
Now, look at what it now says. "But if you bite and devour one another, watch out that you do not consume one another." So, look at something. He was speaking to the body of believers. He said, "Brother, you have been called to freedom." Galatians chapter 5 from verse 13. "You have been called to freedom, brother. Only do not use your freedom as an opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one another. For the whole law is fulfilled in one word, even in this: you shall love your neighbor as yourself." Now, we are having an understanding from this place that there is something you must take note of. There is a liberty. We are no more subject to the law. Do you understand what that means?
See, every believer is righteous, justified, and sanctified. We must get that clear. Every believer is righteous, justified, sanctified. That is, nothing can condemn them. That is their liberty. That is something Christ gave them. You cannot bring a charge against the elect of God. You cannot use any law to want to punish them. They have been set free. They are no more people you can say whether they are righteous or they are not righteous. They are righteous. Why? Because Jesus gave them righteousness as a gift.
So, there is this liberty. It is this liberty that some people are trying to explore when they say you can do anything, you are still saved. Because of that liberty that Christ made us righteous, Christ have justified us. The simple way I can explain that to you is look at the woman that was caught in adultery. Now, that woman that was caught in adultery, Jesus said something to the woman. He said, "Where are those who condemn you?" Isn't it? "Where are those who condemn you?" And when He said that, what did the woman say? He said, "Nobody condemn me." What did Jesus say? "Neither do I condemn you." But had the woman not been caught in adultery? But what did Jesus say? "I did not condemn you." That is how you can understand God's justification: that there is no condemnation. No condemnation. But He told the woman something. "Go and sin no more."
The way God justifies us is that we stand justified before God under any situation, but that does not mean that we can therefore continue with a sinful life. "Neither do I condemn you, but go, don't continue in this path." Now, it is that liberty to which you have been called. He said, "But be careful, do not use this liberty as an opportunity for the flesh but with love serve one another." It means something about the flesh is something about self. It's something about self-interest, self-centeredness. It's something that has to do with yourself. He said, "Do not use it as opportunity." He didn't say for yourself; he said for the flesh. But with love, what is the reverse of love? Instead of walking in love, you are not walking in love, you are walking to please yourself, isn't it? And he's calling that thing flesh. I want you to note that.
Now, when you go to that Galatians where he says, "He who sow to the flesh," go and look at what it says about the flesh there. Please go to that scripture. Galatians chapter 6. Look at what he says about the flesh in that place. When he says, "He who sows to his own flesh." Can you try several other translations for that statement? Please can you bring the other mic so that brethren online can be hearing us? I want us to try several translations for that place. I want you to know something very crucial so that you can understand and better comprehend this matter of the flesh.
[Speaker 2]
Sir, I have Passion Translation here.
[Speaker 1]
Okay, can we go there together? Passion Translation says...
[Speaker 2]
"The harvest you reap reveals the seed that was planted. If you plant the corrupt seed of self-life into this natural realm, you can expect to experience a harvest of corruption. If you plant the good seeds of spirit-life, you will reap the beautiful fruit that grows from everlasting life of the spirit."
[Speaker 1]
Now, do you notice that that version is bringing out something? "He who sows to the flesh." He brought out the flesh for us. What is the flesh? Self-life, isn't it? Self-life. Is anybody carrying NLT?
[Speaker 2]
NLT: "Those who live only to satisfy their own sinful nature..."
[Speaker 1]
Are you seeing? "Their own." Do you see how it's starting to bring it out? The first translation says "self-life," another says "his own sinful desire." Can we see what NIV says?
[Speaker 2]
NIV: "Whoever sows to please their flesh, from their flesh will..."
[Speaker 1]
Are you seeing something again? "Their." Are you seeing the matter of their, their, their? What I'm trying to make you see is that he makes us see that there is something about self and that flesh. That's the point I want to point out. He says, "He who sows to the flesh," he says, "He who sows to his flesh, his own sinful nature, his own." So, he's showing something about self-possession. Do you get the point I'm making?
Now, when you look at where it is coming from about self-life, go back to Galatians chapter 5, that portion where we are reading. It says from verse 13, "For brethren, you have been called to liberty. Only do not use liberty as an opportunity for the flesh but through love serve one another." So, there's a way your Christian liberty can be used to satisfy your flesh. There's a way that "Christ is our righteousness" can be use to satisfy the flesh. I mean, you know some crazy things that we do now? What we say since we have been justified in Christ, it doesn't matter what we do, we stand justified. And yet you could do to people what you don't pray should be done to you because you stand justified.
You see if you properly evaluate this thing, you understand that this preaching of "it doesn't matter what we do, we have been saved," you will see that it's not aligning. Because if you bite and devour one another, watch out that you do not consume one another. I think that's another one. Amplified: "But if you bite and devour one another in partisan strife, be careful that you and your own fellowship are not consumed by one another." Are you getting something? That when we are talking about the flesh, we are talking about what? That thing that Jesus was addressing in Luke 9:23. "And He said to them all, 'If anyone would follow me, let him deny himself and...'" I would quickly love to read that in the Amplified Translation just to bring out something clearer.
Amplified Translation says, "And He said to all, 'If any person wills to come after me, let him deny himself.'" Now listen, amplification: "that is, let him disown himself, forget himself, lose sight of himself and his own interest, refuse and give up himself." So, what is the flesh? What is the flesh? When we are talking about the flesh, it's that inability to disown yourself, to forget yourself, to lose sight of yourself and your own interest, to refuse and give up yourself. That desire to own yourself, to remember yourself, not to lose sight of yourself and your interest, not to refuse yourself and give up yourself. That is what is flesh.
He says if anybody actually want to follow me, if it is me that you want to follow—you know there's a way the disciples and the multitude, who were they following? Jesus Christ. Are they all followers of Jesus Christ? You can be in the crowd and there's a way to follow Jesus. What do you recognize the multitude as? Tell me the name of somebody in the multitude. How do we describe the multitude? But if you say Peter, is it personalized, is it known? If you say John, is it known? Jesus is trying to make something clear. At the end of the day, it was "I don't know you." There is nothing personal between me and you.
Don't forget that was what He said. But they said, "We cast out this in Your name. We did that." But He said, "No, there is no knowing." So, Jesus is trying to identify something. The Bible in Galatians was not written to unbelievers. It was written to believers. And he says, "See, you have been called to liberty. But be careful. See that liberty can make you to remember yourself, can make you to think of yourself, can make you to pursue your own interest, can keep you in a self-life." He says, "But do not use it as a cloak for the flesh, rather with love serve one another."
For the whole law is fulfilled in one word: you shall love your neighbor as yourself. The same word that Jesus used in Matthew when He said, "Whatsoever you would that men do to you, what should you do? Do to them. For this is the whole law and the prophet." Telling you that the reality of heaven is this: whatever that is done to men will eventually come back to you. Whatever. So, whatever you would should come back to you from men is what you should do to men. Whatever your desire, your aspiration is, whatever you are hoping in life, whatever you are aspiring in life that men should do to you—evaluate very well before you do things.
He's trying to make you understand that to understand what love is, you can understand it from self-life. If you do to men what you don't pray that people do to you, you are doing evil. Once you do something to somebody and you don't pray that this thing should be done to me, it's not your aspiration in life, something to attain, and you could do it, then you have done evil. You have sown to the flesh. Are you getting it?
That's why He said the whole law is fulfilled in one command: love your neighbor as yourself. In other words, I want to ask, do anybody have a daughter and pray that that daughter should be defiled before the girl marries? So, how come you could fornicate with a sister? And you say it is actually it is the devil. Are you getting the point? That the whole law is fulfilled in one command. Do you pray that somebody dealing with you is not dealing with you sincerely? Is it an aspiration in life? Are you trusting God that, "God, my aspiration is people should not deal with me sincerely. I should not know their mind." Is that what you are praying for? The Lord is saying that you can by your selfishness know evil. You can know what evil is by selfishness. That's what He's saying: "Love your neighbor as yourself." That the whole law is summarized. We don't need any law. You don't need any law. If you can just understand that whatever I wish that men do to me is what I will do.
Do we need the Bible again? Do we need "thou shall not steal," "thou shall not kill," "thou shall not commit adultery"? Do you know why immorality can be so widespread among believers? It's because of selfishness. If you can imagine, if you can look at it, that this person belong to a parent and you are not praying that I become parent that my children are known for immorality. Even if a sister open her breasts and say "sleep with me," you say, "Sis, no. What you are doing is not correct." Because you don't pray that your daughter, that even if your daughter make a mistake, your daughter will find somebody to correct your daughter. Is that not your prayer? So, why do you say "Actually I didn't want to sleep with her, but you know she was just pressing me and I didn't know what to do again." It's selfishness. That's what the Bible is saying. What I'm trying to make you see is the flesh.
So, he said you have been called to liberty. Only be sure that you don't use that liberty as an opportunity to serve the flesh, that is to serve your selfish self-centered desires. Be sure to forget yourself. Be sure to lose sight of yourself if you want to be a follower of Jesus. How will I know that I'm losing sight of myself? It's every time I want to do things to men, I check: is this a prayer to God that this should happen to me? If it is not a prayer, a desire, an aspiration for it to happen to you, and yet you could do it, you are not following Jesus. You're not following Jesus. If you are following Jesus, you will refuse yourself. "No, you can't have your way. I'm a follower of Jesus. Me who follow Jesus, we lose sight of ourselves." That's the point that the matter is that, that's the point that He's making. That's the bottom line that we are looking at.
So, He was measuring that matter and He was making it clear for the brethren. It was that matter that built to the conclusion in chapter 6 that "Do not be deceived, God cannot be mocked. Whatsoever a man sows, he will reap." When brother Judas was looking like an apostle of faith and he said, "This thing should have been sold and the money given to the poor." This is just a waste. And he was looking like a missionary to the next bridge. Baba knows what he was sowing. You get the point I'm making? Every man sows.
Whereas when you see Peter who was looking so much unstable, the Lord also understand what Peter was sowing. The Lord could see that his instability is not coming from insincerity, it's coming from immaturity. See, the Lord see the heart. If there is anything that makes me fear God, it's that the Bible says the Lord understands the motive of the heart. Do you know what that means? The Lord knows what makes you to think the way you are thinking before you start thinking. He doesn't need to hear you to judge you. In the law court of men, okay, let's hear your defense. You did this, okay, and then you begin to defend. But He doesn't need to because He searches the heart. There is nothing to say "this is the reason." He knows everything.
So, Bible says, "Don't be deceived. God can never be mocked." You see, in other scripture in Proverbs, it says, "Everybody seek the favor of the king, but the justice and judgment of every man comes from God." Some people try to do things no, what will eventually be your lot in life will be that which God has seen. And that which God sees is that which you sow.
So, Paul was giving that matter of self and the spirit. After he had said, "Do not consume one another." Look at what followed in verse 16. But I say, so, where is the "but" coming from? It means that verse 16 is coming from "But if you bite and devour one another, be careful not to consume one another." So, he now says "but." That's for some translation. What about other translation? "So, I say." So! It's premised from that verse 15. So, what does it mean to walk in the spirit? To walk in the spirit is to walk in love. Are you getting it now?
So, when you say "walk in the spirit," what does it mean to be in the spirit? Is it that we are in the Holy Ghost? If you look at scripture how they build on each other, you will understand the mind of Christ. He has said, "But if you bite and devour one another, beware not to consume one another." So, He said then, "walk in the spirit and you shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh. Walk in the spirit and you will not fulfill the lust of the flesh." Now, this matter of walking in the spirit have become a very serious matter. How do we walk in the spirit? What does it mean to walk in the spirit? By the time we are through with sowing, we will come to experiencing God. Most people don't know what they talk about walking in the spirit. And that's why the Bible says the fruit of the spirit is love. Note, He didn't say the fruits of the spirit are love, joy. The fruit of the spirit is love.
Now, let me just say this in a very simple way. It is the Holy Spirit that works in us the life of God. The Holy Spirit cannot work in us the life of God when we don't look constantly at Christ and Him crucified. It is as we look at what Jesus have done for us by His suffering, death, and resurrection that the Holy Spirit work in us the life of God. The life of God, the Bible says "it is God that works in you both to will and to do." It is not actually human effort that works the life of God. It is actually the Holy Spirit. For many people, the Holy Spirit has been made dormant and redundant in their lives even though it dwells in them because instead of looking up at the cross, they are not looking at what Christ have done, they are looking down.
These are some of the things we'll be discussing in experiencing God. Many believers don't know how to experience God. And so it's a life of struggle, struggle, struggle. They are struggling to do this, struggling to overcome this, struggling to overcome this. Except the Lord is directing otherwise, that will be the next series of our discussion as we are finishing abounding in goodness: experiencing God. How do I experience God?
But what I want you to get very clear is this: how do I know if the Holy Spirit is taking charge of my life? How do I know? Is that I will realize that one, I do to people only what I pray should be done to me. That's the basic way to know. It's the basic. But we don't end your life at the basic. You must grow. The growth is when you now come to 1 John 3:16, "This is how we perceive love: in that He laid down His life for us, we ought also to lay down our life for the brethren." That is the perfection of love. The beginning of love is as yourself.
You get it? Many of us have not been able to fulfill even the basic. We are still struggling. You do to people what you pray people don't do to you. You must enter the basic. Then you will now grow above the basic to where you can do to people as Christ have done to you. Because at that level, you realize that nobody deserve anything. There is nothing. They are completely it. I mean it's another level entirely. It's another level entirely in love. But that is the perfection of walking in love.
But the Bible still encourage us, start from the basic. First start with the law and the prophet because actually when the life of Christ is fulfilled in you, you are no more subject to the law. You have gone beyond. The law cannot do anything to you. We don't live a life trying to obey the law. When we begin to look at Christ, the life the Holy Spirit will work in us is higher than the law. That is why anybody who walk in Christ have nothing to do with the law.
Some are still struggling with tithe, 10 percent. That is the law. Some are still preaching it. "Hey, if you don't bring to the house I keep wondering bring to the house." Anyway, I'm not against bringing to the house, 10 percent. They say it is the Old Testament law. I don't want to go into those arguments because our leaders are divided about these things. As every man is persuaded in his heart, so let him do. But I'm only saying that that is the level of the law. That is basic. There is advanced.
Do you know that if you understand that he who sows sparingly will reap sparingly? And he who sows bountifully will reap bountifully. If you understand the law of sowing and reaping, but that's not what I'm going into. What I'm going into to bring out for you is this matter of the flesh and the spirit. That you can measure the matter of the flesh. The Bible now go ahead to mention for you "for the flesh lust against the flesh," they are contrary, "and if you are led by the spirit you will not be under the law." Now, the works of the flesh are evident, which are adultery. So, which people commit, what is adultery? Do you pray that somebody come and sleep with the wife that you married? So, if you love your neighbor as yourself, do you need "thou shall not commit adultery"? What you cannot share, you are keeping your own, and yet you are claiming somebody else's own. You can just be naming them: adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lewdness, idolatry, sorcery, hatred, contention, jealousy, outbursts of wrath, selfish ambition, dissension, heresy, envy, murder, drunkenness, revelries, and the likes.
Please note that he said "and the likes." He's just giving example. Please bear in mind that these are just examples of how you can know the works of the flesh. It is not the comprehensive list of the works of the flesh. But how you can know the root of the flesh is when you do to men what you don't pray should be done to you. Do you know if all of us decide today that I will not do to any man what I don't pray should be done to me? Do you know how many peace will reign in homes? Are you understanding it? Do you know the kind of peace that will reign in families? We'll not need to be preaching again, "Be sanctified," because certain things will just die. So that we'll not need to be saying certain things again.
All these ushers who stole church money and the pastor who decide to be the contractor that added 10 percent into the price the headquarters use to build the church at the local vicinity. Pastor, go and bring the price to build the church in the local vicinity, he bring a contractor who added 10 and 20 percent that will come to me and send that one to the headquarters. Do you pray to be at the headquarters and you have somebody at your local branch who will do that to you? If you don't want to serve in that place, why not go elsewhere? Rather than do evil. If you feel that this thing is not taking care of me and my family, pray to God that, "God, where else do I go so that me and my family can be taken care of?" and not to do evil because what they are giving me is not enough. I know how to sidetrack them.
What I'm trying to make you see is if we can make up our mind and that is what the scripture teaches: please, I'm trying to make you see the basic thing about he who sows to the flesh. The basic thing about sowing to the flesh is not loving your neighbor as yourself. And the ultimate of sowing to the spirit is loving others as Christ have loved you. That's the ultimate. But if you cannot start from the ultimate, I want to encourage you today: start sowing to the spirit from the level of loving your neighbor as yourself. Start. Do you know one thing I found about God? When you draw near to God, He draw near to you. Start from somewhere. Desire to follow God. I got to realize this from my own Christian experience. There was no time anybody sat me down to teach me how to walk in the spirit. Some of the things I teach people now over three, four, five hours teaching, they are things that I learned over six, seven years. That's why I tell people you are blessed when you have God placing somebody over you who have walked the path of God because your journey will be shorter.
In our own time, there was no father. I got born again in the Anglican Church. That we got born again was first a problem. That we spoke with tongues, we were sent out of the church. They didn't even know that what happened to you was that you were born again. It was only we began to talk with some other people said okay give your life to Christ. Say when you give your life to Christ, he say heh, that's not what it means. Was there a preacher? He said no. But that day, say you're not born again. In fact, somebody told me I wasn't born again because there was no preacher. But I was singing hymn and I experienced, I didn't know what happened that evening. It was our usual hymn. And I just started crying and said Jesus come into my life. And I just noticed that I didn't want to follow my friends to do the evil they are doing again. But I could not explain what happened to me. Because who want to obey the Bible, want to obey the Bible, want to obey the Bible. There was nobody to guide you and say "Bro, this is... I mean nothing." And then it becomes... I mean there was nobody to teach you but there was a desire to know God. And it was in that struggle, you stumble, you fell, you stumble, you fell, you stumble, that God in His mercy began to say sit down. This is what this means. This is what this means. This is what this means. This is what.
So, the point I'm making is when we follow God, when we pursue God—you see God is not looking for our perfect, He's looking for our availability. He's looking for our readiness and our yieldedness. He's the one that will make you. Say, "Follow me and I will make you." God can make you. Let us pray.
Make up your mind. I will abound in goodness. I will abound in goodness. I will abound in goodness. I will abound. I've shown you the basic. The basic is loving your neighbor as yourself. That's the basic. When you begin to grow, when you begin to follow the Lord, you will discover the Lord will begin to open your eyes to see: this is actual love, that you love your brother as I have loved you. That is the perfection of love. But if you cannot start from the ultimate, I want to encourage you today: start sowing to the spirit from the level of loving your neighbor as yourself. Start. Do you know one thing I found about God? When you draw near to God, He draw near to you. Start from somewhere. Desire to follow God.
Lord, here I come. I yield myself to You. I yield myself to You. You grant me understanding of Your ways. Grant me understanding of Your ways. Lord, open my eyes, oh Lord, to the riches both of Your knowledge and of Your wisdom. Open my eyes, oh Lord, to the riches both of Your knowledge and of Your wisdom. Lord, open my eyes. Open me, Lord. I yield myself to You. I yield myself to You. Thank You, Eternal Father. Blessed be Your holy name, our God. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen.
Let's share the grace together. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with us now and forevermore. Amen. Surely, goodness and mercy shall follow us all the days of our lives and we shall dwell in the house of the Lord forever and ever. Amen.
