Experiencing His Power at work in Us (Part 3)

Our Redeemer, You are worthy to be praised. We thank You for the privilege of access that we can access God. We thank You for adoption. We thank You for redemption. We thank You for the spirit of sonship by which we can cry, "Father, Father." Our Father, we are grateful. Accept our thanks in the name of Jesus Christ. Lord our God, unto You we are gathered again this evening. Unto You we gathered. Lord, who are here physically, our brethren who are joining us on Mixlr, our brethren who are joining us on Telegram. Lord our God, we pray that You will meet with each and every one of us in the name of Jesus Christ. Lord our God, our desire this evening is that in all areas of our life where we need instruction and direction, as we fellowship together, Lord, You will instruct and You will direct us in the name of Jesus. Thank You, eternal Father. Blessed be Your holy name, our God. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen. We thank our God again as we move on from where we left the matter last week. Last week we were able to get to Romans 8 on the matter of experiencing His power that is at work in us. Experiencing His power. How do we experience this power? This power that He has wrought. How can I, as a believer, how can I, as a disciple of Jesus, how can I, as a follower of Christ, experience this power in my life? How can I experience it? And that has been our focus in the last two or three weeks. Trying to look at the how. Because that is the real issue. We talk so much about the power and least we don't experience this working. And then what eventually happened is that this power, that is actually the inheritance of the believer, is not experienced by the believer. It's not experienced. I said the matter of inheritance because if you look at—I actually intend to read something in Ephesians 1. Ephesians 1. In Ephesians 1, I will read from around verse 15. From verse 15, the Bible says: > "Therefore I also, after I heard of your faith in the Lord Jesus and your love for all the saints, do not cease to give thanks for you, making mention of you in my prayers: that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give to you the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of Him, the eyes of your understanding being enlightened; that you may know what is the hope of His calling, what are the riches of the glory of His inheritance in the saints, and what is the exceeding greatness of His power toward us who believe, according to the working of His mighty power which He worked in Christ when He raised Him from the dead and seated Him at His right hand in the heavenly places." (Ephesians 1:15-20) Now, when we look at this scripture, I'm trying to tie two things together. This scripture is making us to see something very, very important. Now, it is making us to see that when our eyes of understanding are enlightened, certain knowledge will come into us. There is a knowing that will come. Now, that knowledge has to do with the following. What are those things it has to do with? It has to do with the hope of His calling. That is the hope that is in His calling us to become sons and daughters. Another thing about it is you begin to know the riches of the glory of His inheritance in the saint. Not only that, we also know what is the exceeding greatness of His power toward us. So, there is a power that is toward us. And that is what we are talking about. There is a power of God that is toward us. In the actual sense of it, that power of God was something that is toward us. Maybe I should read that very verse in another translation to make it clearer. It says, "I pray that you will begin to understand the incredible greatness of His power for us who believe in Him." Are you seeing that? There is a power. When he says "toward us," it's a power for us. It is something for us. It is something that is for us. And you see, when something is for you, when God decided to make something available for you, you will understand that God cannot be making it available if we don't need that power for this journey. Ordinarily, without that power, the journey cannot be successful. You will note that when Jesus was talking with the Pharisees, He said, "You err on two grounds. The first one: not knowing the scriptures. What was the second one? The power of God." So you see, there's the basis of knowing the scriptures. There's the basis of having a sound knowledge of the scriptures. There is also the case of knowing the power. Knowledge without power is not complete. Just as power without knowledge is also incomplete. The two go together. Now, the Bible making us to see that he said, "I pray that you will understand." Now, what I'm trying to bring out of this matter, that is taking us back to that Romans because I really want to dwell on Romans 8, will be stopping thereabouts at around verse 13. But I want to lay a background to what I'm going to do in that place. And the background is what I'm using in Ephesians 1. Now, what I want to connect for you in this scripture is that actually the operation of that power in us has to do with the eyes that have been opened, a receiving of understanding. He said, "That your eye be opened, then that you may understand this power for us." So the operation of that power has to do with our eyes being opened to see something. Our eyes being opened. It means we must be aided. God intends to aid us to understand this power because we need this power for this journey. You will not need this power when you get to heaven. You will not need it. But while you're on the journey here, while you're taking the journey here, this power is so crucial. Now, what I did here was to make you see that God has something for us. It is for us. The power is for us. And then two, that power that is for us is made possible by an eye that is opened, or eyes that are opened. If there is no revelation, you cannot operate in this power. That's the point I'm making. So there is something for you, but that thing is made—it will become operational in your life by the virtue of a revelation in the word of God, an understanding, a revelation that will make this power an experiential experience, something that is operational in your life. Don't forget that we are dealing with the matter of how to experience this power like it has worked in us. And that is why I'm taking time to trace the matter, to trace them one after the other, as if listing the process. What I'm showing you in this place is a process of prayer. A process of pleading for revelation. A process of crying to God for your eyes to be opened. A process of asking the Lord to make you to understand this power. So there is understanding, there is understanding that must come for the path to be operational. And getting that understanding is possible through prayers. That's the point. That's what I'm showing. Something is for you. That thing cannot come except your eyes are open. Your eyes cannot be open except you pray. He who asks receives. He who seeks finds. Unto him that knocks it will be opened. So the believer in experiencing this power has a responsibility of praying to God that, "God, open my eyes of understanding. Help me to see." Because the truth is this. I saw the principle in the Old Testament. The Old Testament is a shadow of the new. Just a shadow. The new brings everything out. Let me show you this very principle about receiving power in the Old Testament. Look at 2 Kings. This principle in receiving power. 2 Kings 2. I want you to follow this story. It's a very familiar story. We're just trying to draw out a significant thing out of this story. It's a very familiar story, the story of Elijah and Elisha when he was to be taken away to heaven. Now, the Bible says in this chapter 2, verse 1: "And it came to pass, when the Lord was about to take up Elijah into heaven by a whirlwind, that Elijah went with Elisha from Gilgal." Please follow the process. Then Elijah said to Elisha, "Stay here, please, for the Lord has sent me to Bethel." But Elisha said, "As the Lord lives, and as your soul lives, I will not leave you!" So they went down to Bethel. Now, the sons of the prophets who were at Bethel came out to Elisha and said to him, "Do you know that the Lord will take away your master from over you today?" And he said, "Yes, I know; keep silent!" I'm showing you a man that is focused. A man that is focused. A man who knew that something was needed for his journey. So it was not just that he wanted to follow Elijah. He knew he needed something. Of course, we're talking about receiving power. He needed something for the journey. And he had to get that thing. So number one, we saw a man who knew that he needed something. Are you a believer who has realized that you needed this power? Do you have that realization? That's what I'm beginning with you in the New Testament just now. Do you really realize that when God makes something available, it is because you needed it? It's a need in your life. It's something you need for your journey. It's because God made it available for the journey. So you saw Elisha. Elijah was about to be taken away. He already understood that there is a need for power. And he saw that he had to go through the process of getting that power. That's what I'm talking about gradually for you to understand. I'm showing you the same thing, that you see the Old Testament is a shadow. The principles are there. God is the same yesterday, today, and forever. His principles don't change. The patterns, the operation, they may change. But God remains constant. Now, he was determined. He was focused. At a point, some people were saying, "Are you aware of this? Are you aware of that?" That is not the problem. That Elijah would be taken away is not the problem. He knew his problem is if he does not get the power. He knew that's where the problem would be. That Elijah is going is not the problem. And that is the same thing as a believer. Will you come to realize that many things that you are struggling with today, they are not the problem? Many things that you are complaining with today, "Oh, God deliver me from this, that, that," so many things in your life, they are not the problem. Whether Elijah is going is not the problem. The real problem is whether Elisha would get the power. Now, when they got to Bethel, he said, "Yes, I know; keep silent! I know that. Don't bother me about that. Don't bother me about that." Then Elijah said to him, "Elisha, stay here, please, for the Lord has sent me to Jericho." But he said, "As the Lord lives, and as your soul lives, I will not leave you!" So they came to Jericho. Now the sons of the prophet who were at Jericho came to Elisha and said to him, "Do you know that the Lord will take away your master from over you today?" I just wonder these sons of the prophet. I just wonder. May God help us to be focused in life. There have always been people that will badmouth whatever we are doing, that will want to ridicule whatever we are focused on. It's not a new thing. And what even amazed me is that these were sons of the prophet. Believers ridiculing believers. I don't know whether you get what I'm trying to bring out. Believers ridiculing believers. These were sons of the prophet, making a caricature of a man who have served a master all this time. "Do you know your master today?" Is that a matter to be raised? Should that not be a matter of concern that Elisha, what are you going to do now? Should they not be coming with concern? May God help our life to be focused. May we know where we are going and don't mind whatever men has to say about us. When we get to where we are going, they will need us. Eventually, all those people, they came back to Elisha because they needed him. They came back to Elisha because he got what he wanted. Then he answered again. Then he said, "Yes, I know; keep silent!" Which means what they were saying, they were not saying it as an encouragement. They were saying it as a ridicule. They were making gesture. That was why he was shutting them up. Now, Elisha said to him, "Stay here, please, for the Lord has sent me to Jordan." But he said, "As the Lord lives, and as your soul lives, I will not leave you!" So the two of them went over Jordan. And fifty men of the sons of the prophet went and stood facing them at a distance while the two of them stood by the Jordan. I don't know, but I always pray this for my life. That God, may I not choose the part of spectators when it comes to the matters of the kingdom in the name of Jesus Christ. Always pray God to be at the center of it. Always pray God to be at the center of what God is doing. Don't be standing afar. Don't be standing on the fence. Anything can happen when you stay at the border. If you want to follow the Lord, follow Him. Don't stand afar. Fifty men, I wonder why they went. Fifty men of the sons of the prophet went and stood facing them at a distance while the two of them stood by the Jordan. Then Elijah took his mantle, rolled it up, struck the water, and it was divided this way and that way, so that the two of them crossed over on dry land. So it was, when they had crossed over, that Elijah said to Elisha, "Ask! What may I do for you?" Are you seeing something? That it was procedural. From one level to another level. It means all the while, while they were walking, he knew what he wanted. He knew what he wanted. He knew that he should not stay back, and he kept on following Elijah. Now, before I'm taken away from you, Elisha said, "Please, let a double portion of your spirit be upon me. Let a double portion of your spirit be upon me." So all this while, why Elisha was following Elijah, he was ultimately looking for what? That the power that is upon Elijah should rest upon him. Now, look at the answer. So he said, "You have asked a hard thing. Nevertheless, if you see me." It's a matter of seeing. I'm talking about the eyes of understanding being able to see. It's a matter of seeing here. This principle is there. You cannot have what you cannot see. What you cannot see cannot become your own. No matter what Elijah has, it cannot become your own. You must see. There is a place of seeing. There is a place of seeing something. He said, "If you see me when I'm taken away from you, it shall be so for you; but if not, it shall not be so." You can put this principle in another way. You will know the truth and what will happen? The truth will set you free. Telling you that you cannot experience freedom more than the level of your revelation. If you see, if you see. So you see the principle and to talk about what happened. He said, "Then it happened as they continued on and talked, that suddenly a chariot of fire appeared with horses of fire, separated the two of them, and Elijah went up by a whirlwind into heaven. And Elisha saw it." Hallelujah! He saw it. May you see this matter that we are talking about. May you see it. He saw it. That is the same principle we are talking about in Ephesians, that your eyes of understanding might be enlightened. You see, the apostle knew that except their eyes are opened to see, they cannot have it. We're talking about experiencing this power. And we are looking at this simple principle. One thing I know about the things of God is that they are transferable. Somebody says, "How are they transferable?" They are transferable because Jesus Christ said, "All that I've taught you, go and teach. Go, make disciples of nations. Teach them what I've taught you." Principle again, what did Paul say? "What has been committed to you, commit again to faithful men." So whatever is of God is transferable. And that is what we are seeing here. Power is transferable, life is transferable. But there are principles. This man had been with Elijah under discipleship, learning. So discipleship is not just something that started with Jesus. It had been there. A learning process, a learning process, a learning process. And you discover what would have been the inheritance of Gehazi was what went with Elisha. What took Gehazi away was the love for money, covetousness. And that is what happens to so many Christians. What would have been theirs in God, they are missing it because of a lot of things that they are doing today. Immorality, covetousness, so many other things that we are engaging ourselves in. It would have been this thing would have been transferred again to Gehazi. But Gehazi chose the part of deceitfulness and became leprous, and so he missed it. And at the death of Elisha, the Bible says that even his bones that were dead, of a dead man, another dead man touched that bone, the man came alive. If the power of God can be so operational on ordinary men on whom the Holy Ghost was not poured on them. No, He comes and goes. He comes and goes. The outpouring of the Spirit could not be done until Jesus was glorified. So we're talking about another dimension of—our own is Emmanuel. God in us. Christ in you, dwelling in you. That's our own level. But these things they are not operating because we cannot see. We need to see it. We need to understand it. That seeing brings an Elisha thing in our life. I pray that becomes our portion, our daily experience, in the name of Jesus Christ. Now, that was the principle that we are looking at in Ephesians. I just said you see that it's not something new. The matter of seeing. He saw it and the Bible said the double portion of Elijah's power rested upon Elisha. And the Bible records 7 miracles of Elijah, 14 of Elisha, just to corroborate the fact that this actually happened. Now, the point we are now making is for us to now go back to that Romans 8. Now that's where we left the matter last week. Now, I've made the background I wanted to lay. I want us to now come to that Romans 8. Romans 8. It says, "There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus, who do not walk according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit." Now, it says, "For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has made me free from the law of sin and death." (Romans 8:1-2) The Amplified says, "For the law of the Spirit of life which is in Christ Jesus, the law of a new being, has freed me from the law of sin and death." Now, how did this happen? It says, "For what the law could not do in that it was weak through the flesh..." Now, what is it that the law could not do? What could the law not do? You remember our discussion last week. We began from Romans 7. What could the law not do? Do you still remember? For those of us who were around last week. What could the law not do? The law could not make us to live right. The law demanded righteousness. "You should not, you must not steal, you must not lie, you must not worship any other God except Him, you must do this, you must do that." The moral laws then, the ordinances, and the judgments, everything put together, ran to about 300 and something laws. Everything put together. The moral law, the judgments, the ordinances. But you see, the law was weak through the flesh. The law could not build righteousness. The law could not make men to live like God. The law could not make men victorious. The law could not produce Christians that looks like Christ. It could not make men to talk, to act, to think like Christ. Christians could not be produced. What we found was that the law only made people to be condemned. It became a schoolmaster. It made us to know what sin was. So the law could not produce the image of God in man. The law could not do it. Now, it says, "For what the law could not do in that it was weak through the flesh, God did..." Now, I want you to get something. It said God did it. Now, you see, the point I am calling your attention to is that it is very, very important for you to know that victory in Christ is actually something that God did. He, God, did. It was something that was wrought by God. It says God did by sending His own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh. On account of sin, He condemned sin in the flesh. Now, what we are seeing in this place is that Christ in His flesh condemned sin by His death and His resurrection. That is why when you look at that Ephesians 1, look at what the Bible says in that place. It says, "The eyes of your understanding being enlightened; that you may know what is the hope of His calling, what are the riches of the glory of His inheritance in the saints, and what is the exceeding greatness of His power toward us who believe..." Note that now. This power that is for us is according to the working of His mighty power which He wrought in Christ when He raised Him from the dead. So what we are trying to make you see is that what the law could not do was what God did by the death and the resurrection of Jesus. The victory of the believer is something God did. It was completed. It was completed in the death and resurrection of Jesus. That is what the Bible is saying in that Romans 8. God did by sending His own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh on account of sin, He condemned sin in the flesh. Now, why was that done? Why was that done? Verse 4: "That the righteous requirement of the law might be fulfilled in us." Are you getting something? So when God brought about the death and the resurrection of Jesus, that thing that God did was to make power available for the believer. Power becomes available. It's so that the requirement might be fulfilled. So that thing makes it to be fulfilled. It means our life will be an expression of what the Lord requires. Everything the law was trying to do is summed up by the Lord Jesus in two statements. What were these two statements? Everything the law was trying to do is summed up in two statements. One, that you should love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind. And the second is like unto it, that you should love your neighbor as yourself. That is the summary of the law and the prophet. That was summary. Now, what he's saying is that that thing that the law was trying to do by all those laws—keep the Sabbath, do that, don't covet your neighbor's wife, don't steal—all those things that it was trying to do, that it could not do, or that is about loving God and loving your neighbor. Because he who loves the Lord does no ill to the Lord. He who loves his neighbor does no ill to his neighbor. Romans 13, you find that there. If you love, love is the fulfillment of the commandment. It says God sent His only Son so that the righteous requirement of the law might be fulfilled in us. But look at it. We who do not walk according to the flesh but according to the Spirit. Now, who so is? I've began to talk about this matter last week. Walking according to the flesh, walking according to the Spirit. What is this matter of—it says it is fulfilled in us who does not walk according to the flesh but according to the Spirit. Now, how do I walk according to the Spirit and not according to the flesh? That might be a question coming up in your heart now. But you see, with this statement that is made here, it's not anything new from what he has been saying from chapter 7. It's not anything new. The matter of "in the Spirit," the matter of "in the flesh" is about the law of your mind. What did I say? The matter of the Spirit and the matter of the flesh is about your mindset. What that simply means is what I was saying last week. I made a statement last week that—get something clear. If you must correctly interpret any text of the scripture, please always relate that text within the context in which it was used. The more you can relate it to where it was used, the strong likelihood that you will not misinterpret the text. Now, don't forget that in chapter 7 he has said the matter that "with my mind I will serve the law of Christ, whereas with my body, the law of sin." And you remember that last week, I showed you something. I went back to the issue of the bronze serpent that was a topic between the month of June and the month of October, even in some part of November. That you remember I said before that serpent was raised by Moses, the problem of the people was the serpent, the snakes that were on the floor. That was the problem. But immediately Moses raised up that serpent on the pole, there is a shift in dynamics. For what the shift in dynamics? Now, but the shift in dynamics has to do with the mindset. I'm talking about "who walk according to the Spirit, not according to the flesh." That's what I want to explain to you. When I begin to talk about being led by the Holy Spirit, that's not the matter that we are addressing here. If you look at it from what he has been saying from chapter 7, he was addressing the principle of your mindset. As long as they don't change their mindset, God said you should look at the bronze serpent, this one will not kill you again. If they don't change their mindset, and they continue in the flesh, "Moses, please help us. Which one, which one is this one that you want to put on a snake? Is that what you are talking about? Is that the matter you are talking about? We are asking you to tell God to remove this thing. You are putting ordinary bronze on a pole. Is that the solution to the problem? Tell God to remove this thing. Please, please." What would be happening to them? They will keep dying. Why? Because they are walking in the flesh. All the matters about walking in the Spirit, I'm trying to make you understand it. People have misinterpreted this verse in many ways that is so far according to what the context of what the apostle was raising. Chapter 8 was talking from something. It's therefore from something. "There's therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus, who walk according to the flesh but according to the Spirit." So he was discussing something that you can use to understand what he meant here. So he's not telling you to mean that people, the Spirit here has to do with that I can be led by the Holy Spirit, that I can—that is not the matter. To be led by the Spirit is something fundamental. It is something we must all do. But the Holy Ghost can lead us into things, direction, instruction. But that is not the matter that is being raised here. The matter that is being raised here is that anybody who does not think like God, who does not agree with what God has said is carnally minded. That thing is not spiritual. It is not understanding that by faith we understand that the universe was framed by the word of God. That the things that are seen, they were not made from the things that appear. That I will be able to live right, I will have this thing not by my willpower, not by my strength, but because God said so. That is what it means to walk in the Spirit. So you must line up your mind. The real problem why the death of Christ and His resurrection—look at how the Bible put that verse 4 very well. He said, "so that the righteous requirement of the law might be fulfilled." So this thing is an automatic process. It has been automated. Just like that in the wilderness, it was automated. Immediately Moses raised up that serpent on the pole, automatically, everybody who looks up, what would happen to that person? The person will live. It was automated. God did it. It's not the death of the serpent on the floor. It's not coming by willpower. It's not coming by human effort. It's not coming by "I determine to do this, I determine to do that." And that is why whatever we have today is by the grace of God. When you see men boasting, they just don't understand these simple things. It is God who did it. That's what the Bible says. God did it. It was automated. What is the human—what are the humans to do? They are to just do what? Believe, look up. And when we say "believe," you remember what I said two weeks ago. He said, "If you believe in your heart and you confess with your mouth, for with the heart man believe unto righteousness, with the mouth confession is made unto salvation." (Romans 10:9-10) When we say "believe in your heart," what are we talking about? We are saying change the way you think. Change your mindset. So you see something here, that the righteous requirement of the law might be fulfilled in us who do not walk according to the flesh. Sis, bros, stop walking according to the flesh. Stop thinking and struggling with sin. Stop all this, "I will, I will, I will." Align yourself with what God has provided. Stop all this, stop all this, look—look at what the Bible says about the devil. It says, "be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might. Put on the whole armor of God that you may stand against the wiles of the devil." (Ephesians 6:10-11) So when we're talking about the devil, it's not something else again. It's about the armor of God. It's about being strong in the Lord. The matter is not "I." The matter is the Lord. The Lord. And the more we begin to understand these things, to understand that salvation is of God, the more we are able to have His power because let me tell you. He said according to His mighty power, which is for us, which He wrought when He raised Jesus from the dead. So the matter is that as many as look at that thing—let me help you in another way. That look at this for instance, let me use the Old Testament to explain it. God did it by raising up the serpent. He did it. Now, what happens? What happens? What happens simply is that everything about their victory was done by God. Now, what they need to experience is that power of God that destroyed the venom of the serpent. Is that not? Now, that power of God that God made available for them, where is it? That power is in what God said. Is it not? It is in what God said. What did God say? "Look up." So let me get this clear to you. When he said His power that is for us, which He wrought in Christ when He raised Him from the dead, what it is is that the power is for you as long as you look into the fact, into the truth, of what was wrought. The power is for you when you align yourself with what God did. Are you getting my point at all? Anybody that does not align himself—that is, you don't look up, align himself—you don't change your mindset, the way you think, you don't know who you are. You are a rebel. You know who you are? You are a wicked man. You know who you are? You are disobedient. Let me explain it. In that context, anybody that said, "No, Moses, that is stupid. What we want is that you remove the serpent. I'm not looking at any—I'm not looking up. Is that a solution? Putting iron on a pole, telling me to look up. Nonsense! I want the serpent to die down there on the floor. We will not look up." Please, that man, how does God see that man? Is he not a rebel? Is that man not a rebel? Is that man not a wicked man? I'm trying to make you understand why he said those who have a change of mindset are in the Spirit, why those who don't have a change of mindset are in the flesh. That is what he has been discussing from Romans chapter 5. He brought it to Romans chapter 6. He used chapter 7 as an example, that if a human is married—I want you to experience in the flesh and in the Spirit. If a woman is married, the law is binding on her as long as the husband is alive. If she goes and sleeps with another man while the husband is alive, she has committed adultery. But when the husband dies, and that woman takes another man, sleeps with that man as husband, enters into another marriage, sleeps with another man, that marriage has divine backing. That sexual intercourse is no more adultery. But that woman, because she was married before, but she keeps seeing the old husband, she's now having a mind that, "Ah, I've committed adultery. I've slept with another man." Where is that woman's problem? It's in her mind. Because she's not following what God said. When your husband dies and you marry another, there's nothing like adultery again. But she's still holding the guilt of adultery. She's not being free to pray. She does not want to go into the presence of God. When she wants to go to God's presence, she's saying, "Oh, Baba, forgive me. You know, it's not as if I don't love my husband. I still love her. I still love him, even the children. But it's just because I needed to have another husband. I need someone to support me in this life. This man to support my needs. That is why I have to—in marriage, there is no way I will not be sleeping with him. Just forgive my sin." Please, how will you describe the Christian life of that woman? You will realize that that condemnation will not make her to experience the liberty, the power of prayer, the power of righteousness, the power of going forth to stand as witness for God.
