Fear Not Little Flock; It is will be well with those that fear the lord

[Speaker 2] For all who You are to us and for all that You are, we say be Thou exalted in the name of Jesus Christ. Precious Lord, we proceed to go into Your word. We pray—the Bible says Paul plants, Apollos waters, but it is God that gives increase. Lord, give increase to our gathering this evening in the name of Jesus Christ. For our brethren who are physically here and for those who are linking up with us online, Lord, we pray that there will be a working of Your Spirit among us all in the name of Jesus Christ. Lord, let Your name be glorified. Cause Your church to be edified in the name of Jesus. Thank You, blessed Father. In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen. Last week, we were looking at a—we continued with our series, "Fear Not Little Flock." And we were looking at, "For your Father is sovereign." "Fear not little flock, it is your Father's good pleasure to give you the kingdom." And why should you not fear? It is because your Father is sovereign. We saw the eternal truth that God is sovereign—sovereign over circumstances, events, natural disasters. We were looking at how God worked sovereignly over all of these and in all the situations. We were able to come to a point that if God, if our Father is this sovereign, then indeed we ought not to fear. Coronavirus was what we had to grapple with in 2020. We don't know what we'll be dealing with in 2021, 2022, 2023, we don't know. But one thing we know is that none of these natural disasters, none of them, none of the events, none of the happenings—none of them is sovereign. Our God reigns over all. Last week also, when we were trying to lay a foundation for our discussion, we considered very seriously a matter which is the fear of God. The fear of God. And in considering that, we saw very well that the Bible says, even though a sinner may do evil a hundred times, I know it will not be well with the wicked. It will be well with them who fear the Lord. And then we checked it again in Isaiah, and from there we had to do a lot of study that took us to Proverbs to see that actually the person who lives in the fear of the Lord, the person who lives in the fear of the Lord is an individual who will also be kept from the fear of harm. Not harm itself, but from the fear of harm. I want to quickly read that verse of the scripture. It says, "But whoever listens to me will dwell safely and will be secured without fear of evil." Whoever listens to me will dwell safely. Whosoever fears the Lord, whosoever hearkens to God, will dwell safely and will be secured, not only from evil, not only from harm, but from the fear of harm. And I did mention last week that we'll be progressing this week to check more scriptural passages in the book of Revelation showing the extent of God's sovereignty over the universe, over events, over circumstances, over situations, even over who will die and who will live. However, today, we may not dwell so much on that. Rather, I see the Lord wanting us to press further, that there's still a need to press further before we go to Revelation and check all of that. This morning, in the course of the week, the matter kept coming that, no, there is this matter of it will be well with them that fears the Lord, that we still need to check one or two things about it. So, I began to check scriptures as they came to my heart, as they came to my heart. And over here, I have eighteen different verses of the scriptures that are related to the matter of the fear of God. That as I was meditating, they just kept coming, they just kept coming, they kept coming. And what they want to point you to is the foundation we laid last week, that when the Bible says, "Say unto the righteous, it will be well," for they will eat the fruit of their labor. And we saw one very important fruit of that labor to be what? They will be kept from the fear of harm, not just harm itself. We want to look further and further into this matter of why is the scripture saying that it will be well with the upright? We just want to look more into scriptures. Why is the scripture saying that it will be well? Why should I be confident that it will be well? Why should I have no fear? Why should I not be panicking inside? That was the matter we were addressing last week. This inside panic, this inside small-small fear that, hey, hey, hey, this is going on, what is going to happen to me? How is it going to be? What is it going to look like? How is it going to be? What is it going to look like? I want us to check the first scripture, we'll just be taking these references to see why we are saying that it will be well with the upright. Proverbs 3:25. Proverbs chapter 3 verse 25. Proverbs 3:25. What did the Bible say there? The Bible says, "Do not be afraid of the sudden terror nor of the trouble that comes on the wicked." Now, we mentioned something last week, that because he says for the wicked, they will get the reward of their hands. We said when the destruction of the wicked will come, it will come in a way that when they don't expect it, you remember? So the Bible is encouraging us in this place. Say, "Do not be afraid of the sudden terror nor of the trouble that comes on the wicked." Verse 26, why? "For the Lord will be your confidence and will keep your foot from being caught." When destruction suddenly comes on the wicked, when certain things begin to happen and looks like destruction, looks like events are happening around you, if you look at this text vis-a-vis Psalm 91, you will see a similarity. Look at what David said in that Psalm 91. Psalm 91, where he was talking about a thousand to your side and ten thousand to your right hand. Look at what he says in Psalm 91 verse 7 and verse 8. He says, "A thousand may fall at your side and ten thousand at your right hand, but it will not come near you. Only with your eyes shall you look and see the reward of the wicked." So, when certain—when sudden destruction comes on the wicked, when certain things happen like destruction, looks like events seem to be spreading in the land, the Bible is giving us an assurance in that Proverbs, that see, you don't need to fear this sudden destruction that comes on the wicked. You don't need to fear when it looks as if certain things seem to be spreading in the land. Why should you not fear? He said because the Lord, the Lord Himself is there and of course He will keep your feet from being taken. That is Proverbs 3. The next scripture you will see is Proverbs 10:27. Proverbs 10:27. Proverbs 10:27. What do you see in Proverbs 10:27? Can we try different translations for that? New King James says, "The fear of the Lord prolongs days. The fear of the Lord prolongs days." Let's have NLT. "The fear of the Lord is a life-giving fountain. The fear of the Lord is a life-giving fountain. It offers escape from the snares of death." Is that Proverbs 10:27? 10. Oh, sorry, I missed it. 10:27, sorry I missed it. "Fear of the Lord lengthens one's life. Fear of the Lord lengthens one's life. But the years of the wicked are cut short. But the years of the wicked are cut short." So, what I'm trying to bring out is that when you fear the Lord, you don't need to be wondering whether you will not fulfill your days. Sometimes, I remember one of our brethren giving a testimony. She said at a point she was having a particular case of illness. She was having a particular case of illness. And as a result of the case, her mind was going to some individuals who had the same similar case. Are you following me? Those individuals that have that similar case, what happened to them was that they died. So when she had the similar case, she said the first thing that began to come to her heart was, "Do you remember so-and-so person? This was the case, the person died. Hope you have not forgotten that other brother? In fact, the brother's case was not as serious as your own, the brother died." And she said as those things were coming to her heart, as they were coming and coming to her heart, you know what happened? Fear began to build, build, build, build, build. What am I trying to say? Is that the Bible is making us to see something very well here, that as long as a man fears the Lord, does the man need to fear that his days can be shortened? He doesn't need to fear. He doesn't need to fear that his days can be shortened. The Bible says, "The fear of the Lord prolongs days, but the years of the wicked will be shortened." So I don't need to begin to fear that if this person died on a particular case, then maybe me too, my own case too would—are you understanding me? Rather, I need to look into scriptures. What I need to check is am I somebody who live in the fear of God? Don't forget our pointer statement of last week. If you have God as your fear, then what? You have nothing to fear. But if God is not your fear, then what happens? You have everything to fear. You have everything to fear. Now we move on quickly. It lengthens life. Let's look at now 14:26-27. Proverbs, the same Proverbs. 14:26 to 27. Proverbs 14:26 to 27. If you are there before me, please you read. "In the fear of the Lord is strong confidence, and His children shall have a place of refuge. The fear of the Lord is a fountain of life, to depart from the snares of death." In the fear of the Lord, there is strong confidence. And His children will have a place of refuge. They will not be stranded. Somehow, somehow, those who fear Him, there'll be a place of escape. Just like what—you know the scripture that comes to my mind? That's 1 Corinthians chapter 10. 1 Corinthians 10. If you look at the way the Bible present—the word of God gave us confidence in that place, 1 Corinthians chapter 10 verse 13. It says, "No temptation has overtaken you, except such as is common to man. But God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation, will also make a way of escape that you will be able to bear it." So what does that tell you about your trouble? With that trouble, what will God put inside the trouble? A way of escape. The psalmist said, "Many are the afflictions of the righteous, but from them all, the Lord will deliver him." Why? Because with every trouble, there is already a provision inside the trouble. What is the provision? A way of escape. I am saying this because for the disciples of Jesus—because I'll be climaxing with the word of Jesus, what He was telling His disciples—it is so crucial that we do everything to handle fear. As long as we fear the Lord. In fact, our real fear, our only fear should be God. Our fear, what you fear should be God. It's so crucial because once you have that fear, that fear keeps you from the fear of every other fear. And that's the point we are proving. That's the point we are showing. That for the children of God, for those who fear the Lord, for His disciples, there's a way of escape. Look at Proverbs 15:16. Proverbs 15:16. "Better is little with the fear of the Lord, than great treasures with trouble." What is this telling us? That if the fear of God brings little to you, that little will be better than the much that will come outside God's fear. In other words, God with little, that little will become much. If you have little because you fear God, you refuse to add to your life outside the fear of God. And because you fear God, all that you could have to yourself is little. You know sometimes it looks like let's break this bond asunder, let's cast out this yoke of godliness and righteousness, let me do some things and get more outside the fear of God. But the Bible is saying that if what God's fear can give you is little, it's reassuring you that that little will serve you better. That little will do you good than if you throw away God's fear to get much. In other words therefore, if because of my godliness, it looks like—I remember some of my colleagues telling me something some times ago. Say, but you cannot make it in Nigeria with this thing you are doing. That, look, task these students, make them, they can look, they can buy this, buy that. It's just the way you arrange it. Arrange it better and you will milk them and make something out of them. It will look like okay, let's go the way of ungodliness to get more. Maybe we'll be able to make Hummer jeep out of them. But what God is saying is that if what you have by not going that ungodly way is Okada and not Hummer jeep, go and check your life. You will discover that it will be better for your life. Your life will be better. You don't realize that it will be better, but the truth is that the word of God is reassuring you that it will be better with the fear of God, and it looks like you have little. Now, we move on to 19:23. Proverbs 19:23. Look at what the Bible says, "The fear of the Lord leads to life, and he who has it shall abide in satisfaction. He will not be visited with evil." Please, other translation for this particular one. "The fear of the Lord tends to life, and he that has it shall abide satisfied. He shall not be visited with evil." NLT says, "Fear of the Lord leads to life, bringing security and protection from harm." Do you see that? Bringing security and protection. So, what is it that can secure us in this unsecured world? You know the world is not secured. Even with the security, you are not feeling secured in Nigeria. Everything looks like nobody is safe. And honestly, that gives us a lot of fear, that gives us a lot of concern. When you look at kidnapping, you look at armed robbery, you look at banditry, you look at all of these things, thuggery, you look at so many things. Sometimes, when you even look at the future of Nigeria, you are afraid. It looks like we are not going anywhere as a nation. Is that not true? But the Bible says, "The fear of the Lord leads to what? Look at that translation again. Leads to what? Security! It brings security and protection from harm. Bringing security and what? Protection! It can place around you—which means the fear of the Lord can place around you something that is better than police and army. Because this one says it brings security from the fear of harm. It brings protection. I'm saying these things—you may need to go back home and look at these verses of the scripture and use them to handle your heart. Why are we saying that say to the righteous, it will be well? Why are we saying so? It's because of all of these things. We can say to the righteous, it will be well. We can say to the godly, it will be well, because of all of these factors that we are considering. It may look like the insecurity in the nation is something to make you afraid, the insecurity in the nation is something to make you fear, so many things making your blood pressure to go up. But the Bible says that the fear of the Lord, it brings what? Protection and security. Now, let us take another scripture. Proverbs 22:4. Proverbs 22:4. "By humility and the fear of the Lord are riches and honor and life." By humility and the fear of the Lord are riches and honor and life. Through humility and fear of the Lord lead to riches, honor, and long life. Do you see it? Humility and what? Fear of the Lord. Humility and fear of the Lord will lead to what? Riches, honor, and long life. Riches, honor, and long life. I want to ask you, are you not seeking for riches? Are you not seeking for honor? Are we not seeking for long life? The Bible is showing us the path to it. That humility and the fear of the Lord. And so that is why if you have the fear of the Lord, where will you think your life is going? Where is your life going towards? It's going towards what? Riches. It's going towards what? Honor. It's going towards what? Long life. So why are you living in the fear of "I don't know what my tomorrow will look like"? I tell people, your tomorrow is a product of your actions of today. That's the truth. That tomorrow, that future, how will it be? Is that you will reap the fruit of the actions of today. So if you know what you are sowing today, then you know what the future holds for you. The Bible says through humility and the fear of the Lord are riches, honor, and life. Riches, honor, and life. Now let us take another scripture. Proverbs 23:17. Proverbs 23:17 to 18. "Let not thy heart envy sinners, but be thou in the fear of the Lord all the day long." Verse 18, "For surely there is an end, and thy expectation shall not be cut off." Thank you very much. Can we try that in another translation? NLT. "Don't envy sinners, but always continue to fear the Lord. You will be rewarded for this. Your hope will not be disappointed." Hallelujah. The reason why I like NLT translation, it said your hope will not be what? Disappointed. You know ordinarily you will want to envy sinners. You know what it means to envy sinners? You know sometimes when you see some people making it and it looks as if ungodliness made them to prosper. It looks like why do I remain godly? Why do I even remain godly? This godliness, will it pay me off? Is it really paying off? I remember those times when we were back as undergraduates in University of Benin. While some of us will be busy doing all the reading, reading, and trying to make sure that, ah, Baba please help me, I must do well. Some people will call NFA, "No Future Ambition." You will see these people. Sometimes some of them are very-very smart. For the male, they sometimes get around the lecturers with all kind of well-watered envelopes. Wine that are rich, not wine like colored water like zobo. You know some wine, they are like colored water. You know when you say wine that are wine? They will go around and try to circle these lecturers. And some of them that are female, it's the other way round. They have their body to sell. And by the time you discover that those who did not even take time to waste their time doing what you are doing, you start seeing A's and B's and you'll be wondering, "Ah, why did God allow these people to why didn't God just do something?" You know, "Why didn't God just do something and cause them to not to prosper? Why not God do something in such a way that they will not be able to make it?" But surprisingly, you'll be so surprised that at the end of the day, these people that went the other way, you'll be surprised that oh, God should have done something for them not to prosper, but they still prospered. And you who seems to have done all the reading, all the work, you are wondering that you didn't get as much as they do. Are you understanding me? And so sometimes you'll be telling yourself, maybe next time, maybe I should go their way, maybe I should do something else. Are you understanding me? I remember one incident like that, it was a very-very funny incident. It was one of these days when there was fuel scarcity. And so they arranged—the filling station management and their staff—they arranged people everybody should be arranged. So they are going one by one inside. They are going inside to buy fuel. But as we were on the queue, we noticed that some individuals, they will just go, give the security people, give them some money. When they give them some money, they will pass through the other gate and then they are inside, they will buy fuel. So at a point, what happened? The line was no more moving. The line was not moving. Are you understanding me? You know we all stayed on the line. So the line was not moving. So ah, after thirty, forty minutes, people began to realize that people were going the other way. You know what happened immediately? People who were organized before and they were on the line, they too began to jump off the line. They were going to give two hundred, two hundred, so that they too can quickly buy their own. Before we knew anything, the whole line became disorganized. What am I trying to say? The Bible says because iniquity will abound, the love for many will wax cold. People who were orderly before, they saw that being orderly will not make you prosper. You better go and give bribe and get fuel. Are you understanding me? That's what the Bible is saying here. Don't let your heart envy sinners. Don't let your heart envy them. Don't wish to do what they are doing. Don't begin to think that maybe if I compromise a little, maybe if I compromise a little. Bible says don't envy them, but be zealous for the fear of the Lord all day long. The NLT says is that not constantly? But continue to fear the Lord. Continue, you just continue. Now, when he got to the next verse, he says, "For surely there is an end and your expectations shall not be cut off." And your hope shall not be disappointed. You'll be thinking that hey, as things are going, my hope, my hope, my hope might be disappointed. But what did the Bible assure us? It says your hope will not be disappointed. That is why you can tell yourself, "Say unto the righteous, it shall be well." Because at the end of the day, it is the wicked that it will not be well with. In other words, at the end of the day, their hope will be disappointed. And I give you a good scenario from the word of our Lord Jesus Christ when He was speaking to His disciples. What did He say? Say if you hear my word and do it, I will liken you to a wise man that is building on the rock. The rain came, the wind blew, the flood came and beat against the house, it did not fall. But on the other one, He says he who hear my words and does not do, I liken him to a foolish man that is building on sand. I want to ask you, building on rock and building on sand, which one is faster and easier? You see speed. It looks like your own life is slow. It looks like your own life is not fast. It looks like you better leave this slow lane and join the fast lane. Are you understanding me? I want to ask you, we were discussing this morning, somebody that is asked to go and buy something, maybe a hundred pieces, and the thing is sold for one thousand. And the person came back and report back and says, "Look, they are selling it for one thousand five hundred." And they gave him one thousand five hundred to go and buy a thousand pieces of that thing. That is five hundred thousand naira in a thousand places. And somebody who came back to report that the price is one thousand and they gave him one thousand and he went to go and buy. Please, who is making riches faster? The one that goes the other way. There is a fast lane. That's what the Bible is saying. It will look like if you are not in the path of ungodliness, your life will not be fast. There is a fastness that goes with weed, and I want you to look at it even in life. Just look back at those maize that were planted there. When we were planting those maize, we fumigated that land so that the weed will not grow fast. But as the rain began to fall, some of the weed now they have outgrown the maize. What I'm trying to say is that evil move faster than good. You understand? It looks like wow, they are gaining speed. So the Bible is warning us, don't leave the fear of God. Stay there, just be there. Your hope will not be disappointed. It will not be disappointed. Your hope will be intact. It will not be cut off. And the next scripture there that we are considering, the next scripture that we want to look at is Proverbs 24:21. Proverbs 24:21 to 22, sorry. "My son, fear the Lord and the king and move not with them that are given to change. For their calamity shall rise suddenly and who knoweth the ruin of them both." He says, "My son, fear the Lord and the king. Do not associate with those given to change, for their calamity will rise suddenly. And who knows the ruin these two can bring?" My child, fear the Lord and the king and don't associate with rebels, for disaster will hit them suddenly. It will hit them suddenly. You see, he says look, because you don't know what God can do as punishment. And see, honestly, the truth is this. You can choose your action, you cannot choose the consequence. Is that not true? You can decide to take a particular action. But you cannot determine what will come out of that action. The consequences could be mild, the consequences could be serious, could be what you will get forgiveness for, the consequences could be something that may finish you before you can even talk about forgiveness. You don't know. Some you will get the forgiveness, you may not even get—you may get the forgiveness, but the pain may remain for life. We have seen that in different expressions that are into Christian drama. They give different pictures of outcome of rebellion. But honestly it is the truth. You don't know what the outcome, we don't know what kind of punishment God can bring. You cannot determine how God will punish you if you rebel. That's why sometimes I just laugh. When I'm through with it, I just ask God for forgiveness. Are you sure of the punishment that will come for it? So the Bible says fear the Lord. You don't know what calamity they can bring. Now the point I'm trying to bring out here again is that you will notice that for those who don't fear God, they are the ones that can live in fear of sudden destruction. Sudden destruction. I hope I will not be destroyed. No! If you live in the fear of God, don't live in the fear of sudden destruction. Don't live in such a fear. Why should you not live in such a fear? Look at something that follows in the next scripture we want to take. Look at Psalm 25:14. "The secret of the Lord is with them that fear Him and He will show them His covenant." The secret of the Lord is with whom? Do you see why you cannot live in fear of sudden destruction? Why? When you fear God, what is your benefit? The secret of the Lord! Paul said, "I know that I will soon be offered." You get the point I'm making? The secret of the Lord is with them that fear Him. His secret is with them, His secret. Are you understanding me? When we fear the Lord, we have a great privilege that for example, look at when God wanted to destroy Sodom and Gomorrah. Was not the secret of the Lord with Abraham? Was not the secret with Abraham? Did he not quickly start intercession? And what happened? Lot escaped because of the prayer of Abraham. When Peter was to be taken, was Jesus not aware? Said to the Satan, "Satan desires to have you and sift you, but I have prayed for you." The secret of the Lord is with them that fear Him. One thing I'm trying to make you see again is that when you fear the Lord, don't begin to fear of—don't begin to bring fear of God can do something suddenly. There is this kind of fear that people fear. "Say unto the righteous it will be well." They will eat the fruit of their labor. The fear of the Lord keeps you from the fear of harm. When they gather to capture Elijah, was not the secret of the Lord with him? Did he not see the chariot of fire surrounding the place? The servant did not see it, the servant was afraid. But there was a secret with—there was a secret, and what did he tell the servant? He said, "Those that be with us, they are more than those that be with them." Those that be with us, they are more than those that be with them. I want you to note down the following scriptures. We will not be able to read them, but please note down those scriptures. I want you to go there and check out those scriptures because they are recipe for our present situation. Our present situation. There is so much fear in the land. Honestly, there is so much fear in the land. There is so much fear, fear, fear, fear. Tomorrow, what will it look like? Nigeria, this, and some people are even running out of the country because of fear. I'm not saying it's wrong to go out of the country. If you are led to go out, please go. I'm only saying that if you are running out because of fear, because you are afraid, what are you sure of what you are going to meet where you are going to? You remember what is the name of the husband of Elimelech that ran away from Bethlehem-Judah, the house of bread, to the land of Moab, the city of bastard? What came out of it? After everything went was over, later we were told that there was bread back in the house of bread. I assure you, brethren, it doesn't matter the situation right now. For those who fear the Lord, the Bible says say unto them it will be well. And I say unto you according to the word of the Lord, it will be well with you. Let's go ahead to pray this evening. It will be well. Go home and look at these scriptures, meditate over them over and over again. They are recipe for our present situation. There's so much fear in the land. Honestly, there's so much fear in the land. There's so much fear. Tomorrow, how will it look like? Nigeria, this, that. Some people are even running out of the country because of fear. I'm not saying it's wrong to go out of the country, if you are led to go out, please go. I'm only saying that if you're running out because of fear, because you're afraid, what are you sure of what you're going to meet where you're going to? You remember Elimelech that ran away from Bethlehem Judah, the house of bread, to the land of Moab, the city of bastard? What came out of it? After everything was over, later we were told that there was bread back in the house of bread. I assure you, brethren, it doesn't matter the situation right now. For those who fear the Lord, the Bible says, "Say unto them it will be well." And I say unto you according to the word of the Lord, it will be well with you. Let's go ahead to pray this evening. It will be well. Go home and look at these scriptures and meditate over them over and over again. We have enough things, enough by time I was saying, you know, a commentary in a Dake's, Dake's said—I've not gone to check anyway, I just gave you some references. But Dake's was saying that there is 365 places in the scripture where the scripture says "fear not." So for every day of the year, God is telling you what? "Fear not." I've not cross-checked that, it's just statistics in Dake's. But I want you to understand that it will be well with them that fear the Lord. And I want you to make that your prayer. Make it your confidence. It will be well. It will be well. The fear of the Lord prolongs days. The fear of the Lord leads to life. The fear of the Lord take us from sudden destruction. The fear of the Lord brings protection. The fear of the Lord brings security. The fear of the Lord—just keep—go and check all of those things. It tends to life. Your expectation will not be cut off. What is your hope? What are you hoping will happen? What is your expectation? God will guarantee that it is not cut off. Look, tell yourself, "It shall be well with me. It shall be well with me." Set aside your fear, confront your fear, confront your fear. Look at your fear, is it lack? Because you fear God, looks like you don't have so much, but tell yourself tonight that look, my little, God with this little will become much. God with this little will become much. Is there a pestilence around you now? Tell yourself, "Oh, for them that fear the Lord, there is a way of escape." There is—He said there will be refuge for them. Those who fear the Lord cannot be stranded. Those who fear the Lord, there is a way of escape. Tell yourself there's an escape for me. Look, until we look up to God by faith, we cannot please God. Your fear will not make anything better for you. Your fear will only deprive you of entry to God's provision. Because without faith, it is impossible to please God. I see fear as something the enemy use to arrest you from following God. That's how I see fear. Fear will not allow you to follow God. Will not allow you to believe God. Will not allow you to lay hold on what God has promised. Set aside your fear and look at the word of God. And be strong in your heart, be strong in faith. Thank You, eternal Father. Blessed be Your holy name. In Jesus' name, we pray. Let me ask now—we have to round up. Father, in Jesus' name, we are grateful unto You, Lord, for Your word that You've spoken to us again this evening. Lord, we have all, we have all that we need in this life and the life to come, just by walking in Your fear. Lord, help our heart, O Lord, to seek for nothing more than this in the name of Jesus. Lord, we commit Your servant as You have used tonight. Lord, we pray, Lord, You will replenish him.
