Inner Strength for Adversity

[music plays] [Speaker 1] Church and fellowships cannot be more spiritual than the individuals and families that constitute them. God greatly desires a godly home front. These are words of restoration and instruction in righteousness from Family Tent Ministry. May you be blessed as you listen. [music plays] [Speaker 2] Today we are going to look at the matter of strength in the inner man, understanding it. We're going to look at strength in the inner man relative to persecution. That's what we're looking at, that dimension. Today we want to move on. We want to look at our focus for the day, strength, inner strength for adversity. Strength in the inner man to face adversity. Such that in our Bible discussion two weeks ago, we saw that it was an important prayer that Paul was praying in over verse 13 of Ephesians chapter three. He said, "Therefore, I ask that you do not lose heart at my woes, at my woes, tribulations." He said, "Don't lose heart. You don't lose heart. There's no need to lose heart because of the tribulations that Paul was going through." He said, then he went into a prayer. "For this reason, I bow my knees to the Father of my Lord Jesus Christ, from whom the whole family in heaven and earth is named, to be strengthened with might through His Spirit in the inner man." It was an important prayer. And what are we to first realize and understand today? It's the fact that that prayer, when Paul was talking to, look at verse 13. He said, "Therefore, I ask that you do not lose heart at my tribulations." Tribulations can be different dimensions. And that's why we're looking at strength in the inner man from this dimension of adversity. Dimension of adversity. The dimension of suffering. Suffering, adversity, is something today that is not properly understood. Maybe because we are not looking at the gospel correctly. We're not looking at the gospel correctly. There are some fundamental things about adversity. Because, let me say this before we go to the matter of the strength, the strength in the inner man. Strength for adversity. It is also to suffer for Him. For unto you it's been granted. Let me also look at Philippians 1:29. Philippians 1:29. Let's look at that. Philippians 1:29. I want us to try as many versions as possible on that scripture. Philippians 1:29. Who is there? Please just read for us. [Speaker 3] "For unto you it has been granted the privilege for Christ's sake, not only to believe in Him, adhere to, rely on and trust in Him, but also to suffer in His behalf." [Speaker 2] "And also to suffer in His behalf." Do you see that? The point I'm making is that we need to understand the basis when we say inner strength for adversity. We need to get the understanding of the gospel in place. That as far as God is concerned, it is not only given to us... It's not only given to us to believe in Christ, but also what? To suffer in His behalf. Are we on that version? NIV. [Speaker 3] "For it has been granted to you on behalf of Christ, not only to believe in Him, but also to suffer for Him." [Speaker 2] It has been granted to us on behalf of Christ, not only to believe in Him, but to do what? To suffer for Him. Is there someone on another version? NLT. [Speaker 3] "For you have been given not only the privilege of trusting in Christ, but also the privilege of suffering for Him." [Speaker 2] Are you seeing that? It is a privilege. It is something for us that we are given, not only to believe. There's another privilege that we are given, to also do what? To suffer. It's important for us to have this at the background. People seem to misunderstand this thing. And that is why you see that when they sing that song, "All I know, you are always there for me. Almighty God, you are my all in all. No matter what, what trouble comes my way." They are losing the background because they are looking at it that this thing looks negative. This thing does not look like... But the mind behind that song, the mind behind that song is not saying that there is a path for suffering. Even Jesus taught us to pray, "Lead us not into temptation." So it is not praying for trouble, but it's giving an understanding that even if that trouble comes, we should know that it is a privilege. I would rather praise His name. I will praise His name. Because it is a privilege to suffer for Him. If you look at Philippians three, when Paul was speaking, he talks about that I may know the power of His resurrection and what? And the fellowship of what? Of His suffering. There is a fellowship of suffering. There's a fellowship for suffering. And one good thing about that fellowship is that until you suffer, you cannot see some things. That's what the Lord is showing me. Even if I look at what happened in the life of Apostle Peter. Peter said that when we suffer, we see some things. We see some things. What does that mean? What it means is that, do you notice, let me tell you an example. Do you notice that people who have been through on behalf of the gospel, on accounts of the scripture, you have been taken to the prison, you have been beaten by the police, they have brought you into the prison. Do you notice that after some time, the fear that they will put you in prison for the gospel, what will happen to that fear? It'll disappear. But for someone that has not been through before, when they talk about it, what will it look like? You will notice that after Paul has suffered imprisonment, suffered the beatings, suffered shipwreck, suffered all kinds of things, towards the end of the ministry when they now begin to make him see that if he goes to Rome, he's going to suffer serious suffering. What did he say? He said, "No. Why are you bringing all these prophecies trying to discourage my heart? Me, I am not ready to go to Rome to suffer. Me, I am even ready to go and die there." The Bible says then the brethren ceased to persuade him. Why could he stand at that point? Because he has suffered. Because one thing about suffering is that once you begin to suffer as a result of your faith, once you begin to bear pains, begin to suffer pains over your promotion because you refuse to tell lies in your office, situation. You'll not be afraid again because denial of promotion is nothing again to you. You have been through it. But for someone who has not experienced that, will be shaking. Do you understand this thing? Some people feel that those that have suffered have seen something. The reason I'm bringing this background is for us to know that even though there's the need to pray for inner strength to face adversity, it is important to understand that essentially, anyone who believes in Christ is also given this privilege of suffering for Christ. We should understand that. That is why Jesus said, look at what Jesus said in John 16:33. John 16:33. Please different versions too for that. John 16:33. If someone is there, please just read fast for us. [Speaker 4] "I have told you these things so that in me you may have perfect peace and confidence. In the world, you will have tribulation and trials and distress and frustration. But be of good cheer, take courage, be confident, certain, undaunted, for I have overcome the world. I have deprived it of power to harm you and have conquered it for you." [Speaker 2] Are you seeing that? Who is speaking here? The Lord Jesus. Please, another version. Another version. NIV. [Speaker 4] "I have told you these things so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart, I have overcome the world." [Speaker 2] Another version. Message. Let's read the message. [Speaker 4] "I've told you all this so that trusting me you will be unshakable and assured deeply at peace. In this godless world you will continue to experience difficulties. But take heart. I've conquered the world." [Speaker 2] "You will continue to experience difficulties, but take heart, I've conquered the world." What is Jesus saying? He's saying that some people who understand that once you understand the gospel that you receive, the foundation for inner strength to face adversity has been laid. That the life, that faith life that we receive, that life, that faith that we receive, something is coming together with that faith. What is it? Trouble, difficulties, ishoro, challenges. It's part and parcel of it. And that is why many, many, many, many years back, the Lord told me something. And that thing has been a great source of strength for me because it has been proven time and again in my life. At different points when the Lord gets me to, He said, "See, for those of you for those who have called according to my purpose, know this for sure: there are crises in the future, but there are futures in the crises." That thing stuck to me in a way that it became such, such strength in the inside of me, such that when I began to see all kinds of things arising, what did I tell myself? There are futures inside this. And the more I confessed that, I see the future in this, I will see the future in this. There's a future. I have a future inside this thing. Do you know that it has been consistent in my life? There are crises in the future, but there are futures in the crises. And the fundamental thing is that as we look at inner strength for adversity, the first thing I want you to know and understand is that an essential part, the total, internalize the total gospel that we receive is a gospel that gives us believe unto eternal life and privilege of suffering for Jesus. That is the gospel. That is the gospel. But the beauty of that suffering, the good news, is that Jesus assured that "I have overcome the world." I like that version, amplified. He said, "I will make sure that the world cannot harm you." And that's what God is trying to show us about adversity. I will make sure this adversity... I will move you into this adversity, but I'll also make sure that this adversity does not harm you. We'll see that the pattern of God is just what He did with Jesus Christ. How was Jesus perfected? Hebrews, he was perfected through suffering. You see that that suffering, troubles, and adversity, challenges and trials, they all of them actually have a ministry in the life of a player. They have a ministry, and that is what I'm going to show you. From the Word of God, from the scripture, from the examples of men, adversity is an essential part of the work of God. And if you look at the scripture, the reason why we talk about inner strength in adversity is that if you have the wrong attitude towards adversity, instead of making you, it will break you. Instead of making you, it will begin. If you have the wrong attitude towards it. And that is why I want us to begin to understand that adversity is an essential part of our faith. Another thing I want us to see before I start moving on is James chapter one. James chapter one. James chapter one, verse two and three. Verse two and three. James one, two and three. "Consider it wholly joyful, my brethren..." Which version is that? Amplified. "Consider it wholly joyful, my brethren, whenever you are enveloped in or encounter trials of any sort, or fall into various temptations, fall into various temptations, knowing this, that the trial of your faith worketh patience." The trial of your faith works patience. Please read verse four. "But let patience have her perfect work that ye may be perfect and entire, wanting nothing." Thank you. Another version, please. Another version of that, James 1:2 to 4. Inner strength for adversity. NIV. "Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds." Not one trial, but trials of many kinds. "Because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete and not lacking anything." Are you seeing that? Are you seeing this gospel? Another version again is coming for us. Message. Let's read message. "Consider it a sheer gift, friends, when tests and challenges come at you from all sides. You know that under pressure your faith-life is forced into the open and shows its true colors. Don't try to get out of anything prematurely. Let it do its work so you become mature and well-developed, not deficient in any way." Are you seeing? Don't try to get out of anything prematurely. Let it do its work so that you become mature and well-developed, not deficient in any way. Are you seeing? What is Jesus's work out of trouble? Do you know, let me tell you one thing. That version I read just brought that scripture to my mind. Always bearing about in the body the dying of Christ. Have you heard that scripture before? That we bear about in our bodies the dying of the Lord Jesus. Have you heard that scripture before? Always bearing about in the body the dying of Christ. Second Corinthians. In our mortal bodies so that the life of Christ might be manifest in our mortal body. Verse 11: "For we which live are always delivered unto death for Jesus' sake, that the life also of Jesus might be made manifest in our mortal body." Thank you. Another version, please. Another version of that, Second Corinthians chapter four. I want us to read verse 10 and 11. Verse 10 and 11. "Always bearing about in the body the dying of the Lord Jesus, that the life also of Jesus might be made manifest in our body. Verse 11: For we which live are always delivered unto death for Jesus' sake, that the life also of Jesus might be made manifest in our mortal body." Thank you. Another version, please. NIV. "We always carry around in our body the death of Jesus so that the life of Jesus may also be revealed in our body. For we who are alive are always being given over to death for Jesus' sake so that His life may also be revealed in our mortal body." Are you seeing that? Are you seeing something? What did Paul say? That always, what are they carrying in their body? Death of Jesus. For what reason? So that what? The life of Jesus can also be manifest in their mortal body. Are you seeing something? What brings the life of Jesus to our mortal body? It's our exposure to death. And how are we carrying that death daily? He says, "We are being delivered unto death daily." Do you see that? Verse 11: "For we who live are always delivered to death for Jesus' sake, that the life of Jesus might be revealed in us." Are you seeing that? Now, you've seen what brought Paul to that scripture. I want to read that same scripture, I want to read the NLT version of that chapter. I want to read from verse six. Please follow me carefully, why he led to that 10 and 11. He says, "For God, who said 'Let there be light in the darkness,' has made us to understand that light is the brightness of the glory of God that is seen in the face of Jesus Christ. Verse seven: But this precious treasure, this light and power that now shine within us is held in a perishable container, earthen vessel, that is our weak body." Are you seeing something? That light that God wants to shine, where is it? Where is it shining? It's inside this perishable body, the earthen vessel. That is our body. "So everyone can see that our glorious power is from God and is not our own. Now look at it. Verse eight: We are hard pressed on every side, yet not crushed. We are perplexed, but not in despair. Persecuted, but not abandoned. Struck down, but not destroyed. Always," verse 10, "carrying about in the body the dying of the Lord, that the life of Jesus also might be manifested in our body. For we who live are always delivered unto death." So how am I delivered to death? Different trials, suffering, different trials, deaths, deaths. Sometimes persecution, denial, different things we go through. Now that's always dying, what will it now produce? It'll make the life of Christ to be revealed, to be in our mortal body. Do you want to manifest the power of God? But you don't want to go the way of God. I said as Peter was dying, something also came to my mind many years back. I was just reading the scripture and then the Lord opened my eyes to something. He said Jesus was crucified after men were allowed to crucify him. Is that not so? Is that not so? How was Jesus crucified? Men were allowed to crucify him. If they did not crucify him, there'd be no resurrection. Would there be resurrection? No. So you know what the Lord made me to know? He said several times when I allow men to crucify you, you run from crucification. When men are ready, you know when men are ready to crucify you? But Jesus submitted himself several times. What do we do? We run from crucification. We don't want to be crucified. We take revenge on anybody that allowed to oppress us. We don't want to die. We fight back when they fight us. We don't want to die. We kick back when they kick us. We don't want to die. We resist death. And so what happens? You cannot be glorified. What I'm saying is that inner strength for persecution, inner strength for adversity. We need to understand the basis of the gospel. That the gospel that we have received, God has designed the gospel in such a way that suffering is an essential part of it. Because it is by suffering that our faith is perfected. It is by suffering that the power of God is manifest in our mortal body. So if you don't want to suffer, you cannot the power of His resurrection. Such that Job for instance, look at Joseph, take Job. Let's look at Job's classic example of what we're trying to say. I want us to build around this example something. Let's look at some examples. Look at, please I want us to look at Job, the father of faith. The father of faith. What is it that we can learn? We'll leave the story from Genesis chapter 12, 13, 14, 15, 16. Let's look at chapter 12. God called Abraham in chapter 12. We may read the whole test, the whole test of 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19, 20 about the story of our father Abraham. But let's look at some pointers in the life of Abraham. We are talking about adversity. We are talking about adversity. Let's look at some crucial points in that life, in the life of Abraham. Sorry, not Abraham, please. In the life of Job, sorry. In the life of Job, not Abraham. In the life of Job. Adversity. Adversity. Job chapter one, chapter two, three to the end. But the first thing I want you to read is something that was... I just want us to look at some things very clearly. Let's look at something about the life of Job. Let's look at what happened at the end. At the end. Let's look at what happened in the life of Job at the end. Job chapter 42. Are you there? Job 42. Are you there? Job 42. Are you there? Job 42. Are you there? I read something. I want to read verse 10. Verse 10. "And the Lord restored Job's losses when he prayed for his friends. Indeed, the Lord gave Job as much as he had before. Then all his brothers, all his sisters, and all those who had been his acquaintances before, came to him and ate food with him in his house. And they consoled him and comforted him for all the adversity that the Lord had brought upon him." I want you to note that scripture. "All the adversity that the Lord had brought upon him." Who brought it upon him? God. It says that God brought upon him. "And they comforted him for all the adversity that the Lord had brought upon him. Each one gave him a piece of silver and each a ring of gold." Verse 12: "And the Lord blessed the latter days of Job more than the beginning. For he had 14,000 sheep, 6,000 camels, 1,000 yoke of oxen and 1,000 female donkeys. He also had seven sons and three daughters. And he called the name of the first Jemimah." Verse 16: "After this, Job lived 140 years and saw his children and grandchildren for four generations. So Job died old and full of days." What did I show you? The end of Job. But I want to show you, the Bible said "God comforted him for all the adversity that God brought upon him." Who brought it upon him? God. It said that God brought upon him. You see that at the end of the day, even though we pass through different adversity, certain, it's certain. In the final analysis, the story will be that God will comfort us for the adversity. That's the final analysis of it. At the end of the day, whatever God makes a man to pass through, it is for the benefit of the man. It is going to be better at the end. But I want you to believe this, do you want us to look for Job? Because I think what Job went through seems to me the most classic that we can talk about in the history of the Father's Testament. Is there anybody that went through something as much as that of Job? Is there any other person that went through something that is as serious as that of Job? Nobody. Nobody. In the word of the Testament, we recorded word of God that we know, there's nobody. Now, I want to ask you, did somebody like Joseph go through adversity too? Did he? He was a son in his father's house. His brother hated him. At a point, his father rebuked him when he said the sun and the moon they will bow down to him. From a son, he became a what? A slave. From a slave, what was he again? A prisoner. Then from prisoner, the whole thing changed. He came to power. Now look at Job, look at Joseph. Their paths were not the same. Were their paths the same? They were not the same. They were not the same. But you'll notice something, that when Job was going through all of this, when Job was going through, was God out of the picture or God was in the picture? God was in the picture. What was the purpose of God? To destroy him? But I want to ask you, do you know that there are men that if they go through what Job went through, what he went through in a single day, in a single day a man could have, in a single day a man could suffer as much as that of Job. Do you know that there are men that would run mad? They would run mad. But I want to show you what was it that kept Job going. What was it that kept Job going? Look at some instances in the life of Job. In one instance, Job said, "God gave and God has taken. Is that not so? Is that not so? What did he say? "Blessed be the Lord." At another instance, the wife of Job said what? "Why don't you curse God? It's like this God does not love you again." Curse God and die. What did Job say? He said, "What do you speak like one of these foolish women?" At another point in the life of Job, Job said, "Even though He slay me, yet will I trust Him." Do you notice something inside that man? Does that thing tell you that beyond all the riches, beyond all the glamour, the real life of Job is not in those things that were gathered around him? Such that when all of those were taken from him, his life was still intact. I'm showing you strength in the inner man. That a man will say that "Even though He slay me, yet will I trust Him." That man has come to a point in his inner life, in his inner life, that he understood that the foundation of life does not consist upon the matter presented. I'm showing you this thing so for you to see that, you know, some of the things that we talk about today, they are not strange, there's nothing new under the sun. I've told us earlier when we started that we are not come to practice a new faith. We are come to defend the old faith. It's the ancient faith, the ancient faith that was given to us. And in that ancient faith, we can see that in the face of all kinds of trials. Why do people cry and shout? That's why He said, "One basic thing that is missing today in Christianity or correctly understood is how to suffer." Fellowship of Jesus' suffering. How to fellowship in His suffering? Because it's through the fellowship of suffering, we come into the power of resurrection. Such that Job for instance, Job for instance, that tough Job that God has designed to perfect you. Why do you cry and shout? That's why He said, "Wait, look at the prophets that suffered affliction for an example." He said, "Remember Job, and you'll see the end of the Lord. That the Lord is compassionate and merciful." Are you seeing that scripture, James chapter five, verse 11? How God brought him through that trial, so that they can learn that man does not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds out of the mouth of the Lord. Do you know that scripture, Deuteronomy chapter eight, verse three? But what happened to them? When God was leading them to go through that path, what did they do? They rebelled. They complained. They murmured. Two things happened. Number one, that generation did not enter the Promised Land. Am I correct? Which version of adversity is on your path? But they had an adversity and they were destroyed. Number two, do you notice something? God brought that trial so that they can learn that man does not live by bread alone but by everything that proceeds out of the mouth of the Lord. They never learned. They never learned that thing. When they entered the Promised Land, do you notice that they began to think that man can live by bread alone? They began to trust in asherah, trust in baal, because this one they say it can give rain. So they could not walk in the walk, in the walk and counsel of the mouth of the Lord. And eventually what happened to them in the Promised Land? They were destroyed. God comforted them in the wilderness. So when they get to the Promised Land, they will know: No, man doesn't live by bread alone but by every word that shall proceed from my share. They could not stand by the word of God. They could not stand with God. They were looking for human things, gods that we can see, how are we going to do, they wanted imagery, and they went after it and they were destroyed. That trial that God brings on your path, I want to tell you: Two things must happen in your heart as we pray tonight. Ask God for the right attitude. Ask God for understanding. For understanding of your path. Until you understand your path, you will be comparing your path with other people's path. Jesus understood His path. Jesus did not think that He died young. I won't be here again after 33, He would have thought that He died, that was untimely death as some of us will say. To them, it was good Friday. It was a good death as far as Jesus was concerned. Because He understood His path. Pray for God for understanding. That is the first thing about life. Don't begin to compare your ways with other people's ways. Don't begin to compare your path with other person's path. Don't begin to limit yourself about that one. Oh, compare. You don't know the end of the thing. The Bible says when they compare themselves with themselves, they are not wise. It is foolishness. It is foolishness to be comparing your path with another person's path. It is foolishness. Don't compare your path with another person's path. Ask God, God, grant me understanding of my own path. Grant me understanding of my own way. And as you pray for that, pray to God for understanding. This is the thing and this is the strength we are talking about, inner strength. Know, know, Lord, help me to understand my path. Such as to give strength to you. Because God helped me to understand my path. So that you can say even though He slay me, I will trust Him. Because you've understood your path. You've understood your path. Jesus said, "It's written of me. How will the scripture be fulfilled? If I get out of this problem? If I pray for twelve legions? I must not get out of this problem prematurely. I must go through this problem. I must not run out of it prematurely." because He had understanding. Pray for God for understanding. That's the first thing about life. Don't begin to compare your situation with other people's situations. Don't begin to compare what is happening with you. Pray to God for understanding. I want us to begin to pray. This is strength for adversity. Inner strength for adversity. It comes as you pray for... Lord, strengthen me in the inner man. Strengthen me in the inner man. Strengthen me in the inner man. Strengthen me in the inner man, that I will not faint in my tribulation. Paul said, "I don't want you to faint because of my tribulation." Oh yes, the tribulation that you endure. Oh yes, the tribulation that you endure. There is a difficulty that is yours. You cannot escape it. You cannot run from it. If you run from it, you will not be glorified. Oh God almighty. Oh God, I will not faint in my tribulation. I will not faint in my troubles. I will not faint in my difficulties. I will not faint in my trials. Lord God, strength for my trial, strength for my trouble, strength for adversity. In the name of Jesus Christ. In the name of Jesus Christ. In the name of Jesus Christ. Thank you, eternal Father. Oh, blessed be the holy name of our God. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen. This last prayer I want you to pray. Because that was something that was such an encouragement to me. When the Lord showed me the life of Job, where the Bible said "And God comforted Job for all the adversity he brought upon him." The Lord took me again to James chapter five. That scripture was there. He said "You remember the prophets that suffered affliction for an example." He said, "Remember Job, and you see the end of the Lord. That the Lord is compassionate and merciful." Are you seeing that scripture? I want you to pray. Because something just came so strongly in my heart. I want you to pray to the Lord. Lord, in all my adversity I shall be comforted. That's something also I want you to pray. That God, God, I shall come out as gold. In all my adversity, I shall be comforted. In all my adversity, I shall come out as gold. There shall be comfort for all my adversity. There shall be comfort for all my suffering. There shall be comfort. Lord God almighty. Lord, I shall come forth. There shall be a coming forth of my life. There shall be a coming forth of my life. You said, oh, I shall come forth as gold. I shall come forth as gold. In the end, oh God, I shall stand forth. In the end, oh God, in all my adversity, oh Lord God almighty, I shall be comforted. I shall be comforted. I shall be comforted. I shall be comforted. I shall be comforted. Thank you, eternal Father. Thank you, eternal Father. Thank you, almighty God. Thank you, Jehovah. In the name of Jesus Christ we pray. Amen. Let me call on the man of God to close the meeting. [Speaker 5] Father, we want to thank you for another opportunity to be in your presence and to hear your Word. We thank you for the ministry of your Word to us. What a privilege to us to understand the mystery of your kingdom. Thank you for our unveiling of the mystery of your kingdom to us. Lord, take all the glory in the name of Jesus. Amen. As many as have prayed, which work will you do for us in the name of Jesus Christ? Amen. Give us more understanding of your path, of our path in you, in the name of Jesus Christ. Amen. Strengthen our inner man to begin to work in the right attitude towards this path in the name of Jesus Christ. Amen. And I ask God, Lord, you will not allow us to faint in the name of Jesus Christ. Amen. The eternal Lord. Help us that as we gather and are renewed by the Word of your mouth, Lord, we pray that we continue to renew us in strength, in grace, in wisdom, understanding, and revelation in the name of Jesus Christ.
