Love the Solid Foundation for Holiness (7)

Let Your Spirit work within us in the name of Jesus Christ. Lord, as we fellowship together in scripture, Lord, meet with us. Lord, speak to us. Lord, we pray as we connect together, our brethren on Mixlr, our brethren on Telegram. Lord, as we all connect together, Lord, we pray. Let Your Spirit work in our midst, among us. Cause Your church to be edified. Cause Your name to be glorified. Thank You, eternal Father. In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen. We have been considering this very important topic all the while. Love, the solid foundation for holiness. Love, the solid foundation for holy living. Love, the solid foundation for holy living. We have been considering this topic now for some time. I believe that as we move on with this topic, the Lord Himself would grant more and more light in the name of Jesus Christ. Love, the solid foundation for holiness. Last week, we were looking at 1 John 4. 1 John 4. And we were trying to reconcile that with what other scriptures have been saying about the matter. We left the matter in 1 John 4 last week, and I want us to go back there this week as we look further into this matter of love, the solid foundation for holy living. 1 John 4. We considered the matter from around verse 9 last week, and one thing that came out very clear is in the verse 12. Verse 12. It says: "No one has seen God at any time. If we love one another, however, God abides in us and His love has been perfected in us." (1 John 4:12) We notice that people have been talking... the Bible says nobody has seen God. Nobody knows God in all His fullness. But one thing the Bible keeps pointing to is that whatever we want to manifest about God, whatever it is in God, it says if we love one another, God abides in us. And then we also considered very seriously the verse 16. It says: "We know and we believe the love that God has for us. God is love, and he who abides in love abides in God, and God is in him." (1 John 4:16) So we saw something very clearly last week that God is holy. God is love. God called us to be holy. The God who is holy is the same God who is light. He is the same God who is the truth. So we saw a connection. God is love. God is holy. God is light. God is the truth. God is the way. So we saw that anybody who walks in love, that person walks in holiness, that person walks in the light, that person walks in the truth, that person walks in the way. Because God is holy. God is love. God is light. God is the way. God is the truth. So when any man walks in the love of God, you have all those manifestations following him. Because God is love. What the love of God comes to play, the holiness of God is manifested. The light of God is seen. The truth of God is seen. The way of God is known. And I said it is also the other way around. When we don't walk in love, then we cannot walk in holiness. Then we cannot walk in the light. Then we cannot walk in the truth. Then we can never be in the way. I said we saw the connection that it is impossible to have holy conduct where love is not. And we said something very categorical last week too that I just want to make reference to before we move on to our focus for this week, still considering this matter of love, the solid foundation for holiness. We said something last week, and that is that it is very, very crucial for the believer to know that when we say that walking in love is walking in the way, is walking in the light, is walking in the truth, we are also saying that the believer should realize that everything that God did, everything that God did for mankind, what was the basis of it? The Bible says, "For God so loved." Now, what we want to move on to today, this week, now when we are saying that love is the way, love is the truth, love is the light, I want us to see a big connection. We have been saying that it was the love of God that made us to know the holiness of God, that made us to know the power of God, that made us to know the [unclear: mercies] of God, that made us to know the grace of God. Is that not so? Now, what is the implication of that for we the believers? I want us to see something together this evening as we try to move on. Love, the solid foundation for holy living, for holiness, or for holy conduct. Now let's look at this familiar scripture, but this time around we'll be looking at it from verse 12, 1 Corinthians 12 through 13. Now I may not have to take too much background for the church in Corinth because I believe we know the church in Corinth very well. When we were looking at the cross, we took a serious background on the church in Corinth. What are some of the things you can remember about the church in Corinth? They were full of gifts. Yes. They were full of expression. They were full of... they were so divided. Thank you. They were so divided. They were very carnal. And then one thing we saw about that church is that there was so much gift in that church operating. Now Paul began to address the matter of the Corinthian church from the verse 1. He's writing to them. They are holy. However, he wants them to be of one mind and so on. Now when he got to the chapter 12, he now came to the matter of their spiritual gift, isn't it? So he began to speak about their spiritual gift. We will not be looking at... I want to use 12 to drive into 13 actually. He says: "Now concerning spiritual gifts, brethren, I do not want you to be ignorant." (1 Corinthians 12:1) Meaning they are ignorant in it. "You know that you were Gentiles, carried away to dumb idols, however you were led. Therefore, I make known to you that no one speaking by the Spirit of God calls Jesus accursed, and no one can say that Jesus is Lord except by the Holy Spirit. There are diversity of gifts but the same Spirit. There are differences of ministry but the same Lord. There are diversities of activities but it is the same God that works in us. But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to each one for the profit of all. For to one..." (1 Corinthians 12:2-8) He mentioned various gifts between verse 8, verse 9, verse 10, verse 11. And when he got to verse 11, he said: "But to each one the same Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one individually as He wills." (1 Corinthians 12:11) Now he went further: "For as the body is one and has many members, but all the members of that one body, being many, are one body, so also is Christ. For by one Spirit we were all baptized into one body, whether Jews or Greeks, whether slaves or free, all have been made to drink into one Spirit. For in fact the body is not one member but many." (1 Corinthians 12:12-14) Is that not true? The body is not one member but many. Do you get what he's trying to say? The body has many members. Eyes, nose, legs. There is one body but many members. "If the foot should say, 'But I am not the hand, I am not of the body,' is it therefore not of the body? And if the ear should say, 'Because I am not the eye, I am not of the body,' is it therefore not of the body? If the whole body were an eye, where would be the hearing? If the whole body were hearing, where would be the smelling? But now God has set the members, each one of them in the body, just as it pleased Him. And if they were all one member, where would the body be? But now indeed there are many members, yet one body. The eye cannot say to the hand, 'I have no need of you,' nor again the head to the feet, 'I have no need of you.' But much rather, those members of the body which seem to be weaker are necessary. And those members of the body which we think are less honorable, on these we bestow more abundant honor; and our unpresentable parts have greater modesty, but our presentable parts have no need. But God composed the body, having given greater honor to the part which lacks it, that there should be no division in the body, but that the members should have the same care one for another. If one member suffers, all members suffer. If one member is honored, all the members rejoice with it. Now you are the body of Christ and members individually. And God has appointed these in the church: first apostles, second prophets, third teachers, after that miracles, then gift of healing, helps, administrations, varieties of tongues. Are all apostles? Are all prophets? Are all teachers? Are all miracle workers? Do all have the gift of healing? Do all speak with diverse tongues? Do all interpret?" (1 Corinthians 12:15-30) Now what is Paul addressing from what we have just read? What was he addressing? Of course, he was addressing the issues of the division. And what is that division about spiritual gift about? Somebody is feeling, "I am more important than the other person." Somebody is feeling, "Without me, others cannot thrive." Somebody is feeling, "Look, I can do without you. I can go my own..." You get it. That's what he was addressing. Then when we look at the verse 31, the Bible said after he has said, "Do all have the gift of healing?" but after all those things, he said: "But earnestly desire the best gift, and yet I will show you a more excellent way." (1 Corinthians 12:31) That's King James. Do we have any other translation saying this matter very differently? NLT, let’s hear what NLT says: "So you should earnestly desire the most helpful gifts. But now let me show you a way of life that is best of all." But now let me show you a way of life that is best of all. Any other translation? Let’s have it. "But earnestly desire and zealously cultivate the greatest and the best gifts and graces, the higher gifts and the choicest graces; and yet I will show you still a more excellent way, one that is better by far and the highest of them all: love." Okay. So he wants to show them a more excellent way, one that is better by far and the highest of them all: love. Highest of them all: love. He now mentioned it in that place: love. Now are you following? What exactly is Apostle Paul driving at in this place? That there are various... you can be gifted. You can be a pastor, you can be an apostle, you can be a teacher, a miracle worker, a healer. You can have all of those gifts. But there is something that is the greatest of them all. There is something that surpasses them all. And he want to talk about that thing. And it was that matter that now open up where in 1 Corinthians 13 that summarized in 13:13 that says, "Now abide hope, faith, and love, but the greatest is love." Now what makes love the greatest? What makes it the greatest is when we are connecting today: Love, the solid foundation for holiness. Love, the solid foundation for holy living. Now look at something, brethren. Let's now look at that chapter 13. These are very familiar scriptures. It says: "Though I speak with tongues of men and of angels..." (1 Corinthians 13:1) Why did he say "of angels"? Because we know that tongues are actually tongues of men. If you go back to when the Holy Spirit came down upon the apostles, they began to speak as the Holy Spirit gave them utterance, but men could hear them speak in their languages. When the Holy Spirit came down in the day of Pentecost, what we knew, what we understood from scripture, were not tongues of angels. It was tongues of men. Men heard the apostles speaking their... so that was what brought the crowd. They were hearing Egyptian language, hearing... "Are these not Galileans? What is going on here?" And then the confusion started, the multitude gathering. But Paul was pushing something. The general thing we know about the Holy Spirit upon a man is that you are enabled to speak a tongues of men that you never thought. Enabled to magnify mysteries in that language. However, it could be that you are not even at our level. God did some exceptional things. Your own tongues is not the one of men. Your own happens to be the one of angels. We were not told anywhere about tongues of angels, but perchance, perhaps it is possible that you are not at our level. God can do some exceptional things with some people. Do you agree with me? God can do it, exceptional things. And so when this person is speaking, his own mystery is not in the tongues of men, it is in the tongues of angels. So Paul was saying even though I speak in the tongues of men, that's level one. But you break that level. You went to another level of tongues, tongues of angel. He's saying that that expression, if the person who is having that rare manifestation does not walk in love, that person is nothing. It means no matter the that level of expression, you don't touch God. You don't touch the holiness of God. You don't touch the truth of God. You are not in the light of God. You are not in the way. You are out of the way. You are out of the truth. You are out of the light. You are still in darkness. Your conduct is not holy. So all those things that you are talking about, you are still a worker of iniquity. The only thing that can give that rare privilege, that can bring it into light, that can bring it into the truth, that can bring it into the way, that can bring it into conduct that is accepted by God, is what? Is love. So what we are saying, brethren, very particular this evening, is that these things that looks rare, that looks amazing, they are still... that's why he said I want to show you the greatest. Now he left that. That's why I said Paul was speaking in levels. He said, "Though I have the gift of prophecy..." (1 Corinthians 13:2) That's level one. You know they were prophesying. "And understand all mysteries." That is another person again that is not in our level. The Bible says we know in part and we understand in part. Is that not true? The Bible says we know in part and we understand in part. Not only that, the Bible says that the things that are revealed, they are for men. The ones that are not revealed, they belong to who? They belong to God. Is that not true? Making us to know that there is nobody that can comprehend all of God. But perhaps there's another rare happening again. That you don't only prophesy, God took you to another level beyond us. You are not in the level of man. You are in the level of God. That's why he spoke about angels at first. I hope you are understanding it. Now you have come to a level where you as man understand all mysteries. There is no man that understand all mysteries. By mysteries we mean the truth about God. We are not talking of mystical things. The Bible said that the mysteries of God is Christ. In fact, when the Bible even told us is that we may begin to comprehend the love of God, the incomprehensible love of God, that we cannot even comprehend it. Bible talk about the peace of God that passes all understanding. So but there is this brother or this sister is not at our level. There is nothing that passes his understanding. I don't know who that brother is. I'm still looking for that brother. I wish I can meet that brother if I can know his name. But what Paul is trying to say is that these statements, they are hyperboles. Because they want to drive at a very serious point. They want to make you understand something very deep. That even if the impossible is done with you, that if you happen to come to the level where you know all mysteries like God, if love is not there you cannot be God, because that God that manifested, manifested in love. Are you getting the point now? That God that you say you now know all, all, all, that God that we don't know all, all, all, when He wanted to show Himself, how did He reveal Himself? "For God so loved the world." How did He reveal Himself? We saw that while we were yet His enemies, what did He do? He died for us. What did we see in Him? He was the offended. He went ahead to pay the price of the offender and He came seeking the offender. He was not dealing with us according to our iniquity. He was dealing with us according to His steadfast love. Now you have come to know everything about that God, you have become that God, but you don't have love. You can’t be that God. You must be another god. Are you getting the point the person is making? You can’t be that God. That thing you comprehend about all mysteries, it's a different mysteries from the mysteries of the God that we are dealing with in the Bible. Now the point is that if I have all knowledge and though I have all faith so that I can move mountains but have not love, I am still nothing. Why am I nothing? Because you are apart from God. That's the matter. You are apart from God. You are not in the light. You are not in the truth. You are not in the way. You are not holy. You are not in God. No one has seen God before, but there is a way to know God. So whatever is that... and that's why people talk sometimes about understanding, and that understanding you begin to see division, you begin to see arrogance, you begin to see impatience, you begin to see, you know, you begin to see some pride, you begin to wonder... the person don't know as he ought to know. The person who have all mysteries is loving. And that person is God. What did Jesus say about Himself? He said, "I am meek and lowly in heart." What did the Bible teaches us? Philippians 2: Let this mind be in you which is also in Christ Jesus. Even though He was equal with God, He thought not equality as something to grasp. Let no man seek his own interest but the interest of the other man. What is the mind that is to be in us? The mind of humility because He is lowly in heart. So when knowledge prosper with arrogance, God has not been found. God has not been found. You have not found God. And that's the point this thing is making. That you see, it is impossible to be in God. It is impossible for anybody, let us describe that person. Who is that person? The person have all kinds of manifestation. The person have all kinds of gift. You call him apostle, you call him teacher. Give him all the knowledge, give him all the grace, give him all the faith, give him all the miracle. He has... I don't know what again you want to describe about that person. The person has come to the level of being equal with God, he knows all mysteries. What again can you describe about that person? Nothing. But that person is nothing. You know what he's telling you? Do you realize, brethren, have we ever thought about it? Look at it up and down. Look at it from eternity to eternity. What makes God something to you? How did God become something to you? Because He commended His love towards you. Do you see that? What made God to become something to you? What made God to become... You are the reason why I am singing. What made God to become something? God would have been nothing to us with all that He is if He has not first loved us. The general thing people think about God is He's going to suffer in hell. That is what will come to their mind because after the fall of the first Adam, God concluded all men as condemned. Nobody could come back to God. The blood of bulls, the blood of goats, could they take away sin? Abraham was waiting for Jesus. Moses were waiting, all of them. Because sin could not be taken away. The key of death was with who? Was with the devil. So everyone, even those people who were trying to... that were calling godly men of old, where were they? They were kept dead. They could not access life. It was when Jesus came that He did what? He led captivity captive. He went and free all of them. So I want to ask you, what makes... that's why I keep telling people. God is mighty. God is a miracle worker. God is a healer. You have so many names. I have one calendar in my house, all kinds of names of God: Jehovah-Shammah, Jehovah-Nissi, Jehovah-Shikenu, Jehovah-Rapha, Jehovah-El Shaddai, Jehovah this, Jehovah that. Brethren, all those Jehovah names that you are calling, they have no meaning. They would have been meaningless if love was not first commended to us. Do you see that? If you now think of it, is there any man that is at the level of God? There is no man. So I want to ask you, what is the type of gifting you can have that can now make your own life something to someone when you don't walk in love? That is why he said I am nothing. You are nothing. The nothing here, please get the matter that we are making. The person who is raising the dead, healing the sick, casting out demons, is he not something ordinarily? So understand the point of the scripture. But what it is is that anything man does apart from acceptance with God is nothing. That's what he said. Anything you are, anything you may be doing, you may be raising the dead, you may be doing, you may be having branches, you may be having... you are the G.O. all over, you have all the missions, you have all the parishes. Once you say "Arise," miracle is going on. "Be healed," healing is going on. All those things are happening by your name. But do you know who you are? You are nothing. Why? Because you're not having it expression in love. So when he was saying pursue the more excellent thing, he was trying to make them see the most excellent of all. There is something to pursue. Because that is what the Corinthians, that is what they were not seeing. They were priding themselves in their... all those kind of things, "We are the Jim-Jim brothers. When I stretch my hand like this, power happens." And that makes you feel that... "When I talk, nobody talked in fellowship because we are the fellowship ourselves. And I don't mean me." You know, bro, if you understand mysteries, can anybody be anything before your face? Take it. You know all the mysteries. So what can we teach you? We can teach you nothing. Do you know why the Bible said that who can counsel God? Do you know why you cannot counsel Him? Because there is nothing He does not know. So what do you want to counsel Him about? But the point is the reason why we are pointing to these things is because we are missing out something very serious in the Christian work today. We are not placing our priorities right. We are giving fame and glamour to certain things. We are underplaying the real things. I'm going to show you in different areas of conduct this evening. Now he now went ahead to say that "Though I bestow all my goods to feed the poor." (1 Corinthians 13:3) Is that not wonderful? That's wonderful. But you don't even stop there. You take a step further, "And though I give my body to be burned." You not only give yourself... your things, you also give yourself to be burned. You are like a martyr for Jesus. You are like a martyr. Am I not correct? It says even if you get to that point that you gave your life, what make that of Christ to be nothing is that it was a commendation of love. Oh, are you understanding me? You know Christ also gave His life. What makes it not to be nothing? It was an expression in love. What was the love? "Father, forgive them. They don't know what they are doing." If you know you are the Christ, come down and we will show you. Can He not come down? Humility. Not threatening. Not threatening. "Tell me! Me! I will show you that before the world was, I was." Can't He? He was just looking. "Save others, save yourself! If you are the Christ..." Even that one that was crucified with Him, one of the thieves said, "Bad joy like us, if you are different, why can't you..." Was there any response? The Bible says like a sheep before the shearers, He was dumb. Is it because He lacked power? You are seeing humility. You are seeing submission. You are seeing obedience because God had said like a sheep before the shearers, so you must behave. And so even when the thing... and that was why you notice, I tell people, I keep telling people, if you think you can live the Christian life by the will of the flesh, you will fail. Jesus never did it by the will of the flesh. You notice that the Bible says He said, "Father, let this cup pass over Me. But not as I will, Your will be done." What was the next thing that we saw? The Bible says angels appeared unto Him. They did what? They strengthened Him. Nobody can live the life of God without the power of God. Nobody. Without the Holy Spirit, nobody can... it is not like "I am trying." It's not that... I tell people, you can never try, you will fail. But when we come, when we come by faith, I have been crucified with Christ. Nevertheless I live. The my old man have been circumcised with Him. As we look unto Jesus, what happens? The power of God is made effectual in our life and we are able to do what? To live the life of God. And that's the reality about these things. That's the reality of this matter. So he says even if I give my body to be burned and have not love, you see it, what did he say? It profits me nothing. So let me tell you, what make the death of Christ not to be a suicide? That people say He just dies, He went to kill Himself. No. It was because it was an expression of the love of God. That's why you notice, he says the love of God, how strong, a measureless might. If all the ocean were to be books and everybody were to be scribes, can they finish describing the love of God? They cannot. So profound, so great. And so you notice that that is what helps you to understand, because sometimes the believers are... so what then, what do you then mean by all of this? What he is saying is that if all spiritual gifts are in place, all those you are an apostle, you are this, you are that, just mention all of those mysteries, all of those things. But come to think of it, you cannot be patient with people's fault. You cannot be patient with the failings of the brethren. You cannot be patient with hurt and grief. You cannot be kind even when evil has been done to you. Don't you see the ways of God? That God was sending a man to save his brothers, and the way He sent the man to save his brothers is that He made his brothers to hate him, betray him, and sold him. and he went to prepare him to come and save them. Is that the way to make somebody to save somebody? So do you know that in the ways of God, God can make men do you evil so that you can come and save them? Brethren, I'm just trying to explain something about God. Something about the ways of God. And that's why you begin to see that many people... brethren at different time have asked me, and that's why I'm taking time to expatiate this matter like this. Somebody has said, "Sir, is it possible for somebody to love like this, to do this kind of thing and not really love?" I said because you don't know what love is. You can do all of that in the midst of the brethren, and yet you cannot tolerate the failures of the brethren. When they sin against you, many times you want them to pay the sacrifice than you pay the sacrifice for sin. You will not be like your Master. Because we learned from Him that the offended can be the peacemaker. With all the giftings, with all the giving, it's possible that you still envy when it looks like somebody else's gift is manifesting than your own. You begin to see how you want to bring the person down so that you too can be... it's like this person want to outshine me. Are you understanding me? You feel threatened that somebody else is shining. He said that is not love. If you love, it will be your joy for you to decrease for others to increase. As long as that is there... that is what John the Baptist said. He said, "My own ministry, I'm going my own way." That is the same ministry. You don't envy others. Everybody have their own path. You might be so gifted, and yet God may not want you to have more than a congregation of a hundred. You are captain over fifty. Somebody may not be as gifted as you and God have raised him to be a captain over thousands. You begin to say, "[unclear] who had Jesus more than me? We are the ones that got born again, O. We got him born again. What does he know? Don't mind the stupid boy. He's trying to be popular." The boy may not be trying to be popular. It may just be the grace of God over his life. Envy. I'm talking about envy. You see, the Bible made us to know that, look, how can you perfect the gift of God in your life? How can you perfect this gift? The perfect it is is love. It is the bond... that is just gift, but they don't operate. There is a context in which they can operate that can make your life acceptable. It is your life is first important to God than your works. And that's the point. Your life is first important thing than your works. And that's the truth about it. Your life is the first important thing before your works. When your life is not right, your work cannot be accepted. And what I see many times was what happened in 1 Samuel chapter 9. Saul went to look for the asses of the father, the asses that were missing. You know when he got to a point, he made a statement. He said, "Look, let's go back home, lest Baba will stop thinking about the asses and start thinking about us." Some people are lost in the work of God that God is not thinking again about the asses they went to look for. God is now thinking about them because they have left home. The care of God over their life now is not the asses He sent them to look for. It's how they will not be lost themselves. Why? I'm talking about walking in love. Love, the solid foundation for holy conduct. Love, what makes us to walk in the light. Love is what bring us into the way. Love is what bring us into holiness. Love is what bring us into the truth. Therefore, I make bold to say love is the basis of liberty. I will leave the matter here today, brethren. Let us begin to pray. I want you to talk to the Lord this evening. Love, the solid foundation for holy conduct. Love, the solid foundation for conducting ourselves in a way that we are acceptable to God. Love. Love. Love, the basis. He who called us is holy. We are moving towards this matter of holiness, and we are showing that love is the excellent way to it. I don't know how this today Bible study came to you, but I want you to talk to the Lord. I want you to talk to the Lord. Pray and talk to the Lord. Pray and talk to the Lord. Lord, I want to be like Jesus in my heart. Lord, I want to be like Jesus in my heart. In my heart, in my heart, in my heart, in my heart, Lord, I want to be like Jesus in my heart. Our Father, this is our cry. Lord, this is our cry this evening. This is our plea. In our heart, in our heart. Lord, beyond our sensation, beyond show, not about showmanship, beyond the gifts, beyond the power, beyond the miracles, beyond the offices, beyond the grace and the works, Your works in our lives. Lord, in our heart, we will be like the Master. Lord, help us. Thank You, eternal Father. Blessed be Your holy name, our God. Lord, that our love will grow in understanding, in insight, in discernment, in the name of Jesus. That we may be able to approve that which is excellent, able to go after things of real value in the name of Jesus. That we may not pursue shadows. We'll not pursue vanities in the name of Jesus.
