Men Ought Always to Pray

[Speaker 1] Again for another time in His presence, we appreciate Him for His mercies, His goodness, His help, His support. Above all, we want to thank Him for redemption. We want to thank Him for redemption. And so, as we proceed again today, which is our last Monday of the month, it's supposed to be a prayer meeting where we'll be considering Luke 18 as the basis of our prayer this evening. The Bible says men ought always to pray and not to faint. And so, before we do that, we want to take a recap of some of the things we had last week. But then, let's first have a word of prayer. Heavenly Father, we thank You, we bless Your holy name. We give You glory, we give You praise, we give You honor and adoration. We thank You again that we are here this morning, the last Monday in the month of July, an hour of prayer. Lord our God, we look up unto You, we pray that Your spirit will work within us and among us in the name of Jesus. Our brethren online and we that are here physically gathered, make it a time, oh God, of great impartation for our lives in Jesus' name. Lord, our eyes are on You. Let nothing prevail against Your purposes in our lives in Jesus' name. Thank You, immortal Father. In Jesus' name we pray. So, we want to do a quick recap from our last week discussion. I want to ask our brethren who are physically here, what was the point of lesson, what they took home from the last meeting? We were looking at "Oh Lord, bless me indeed and enlarge my coast." Our discussion last week was about the Lord enlarging our coast. A lot of issues were raised. So, I want to ask our brethren who are physically present, what was the point of lesson, what they took home. So, who are we starting with over there? Who is speaking first? What we took home last week from our discussion? Nobody wants to say anything? Okay, Brother, please come and have the mic. [Speaker 2] Praise the Lord. Hallelujah. Last week I was blessed with... I learned under "Enlarge our coast" that to enlarge our coast is after God has imparted our life and has saved us, we too must leave the legacy. We must have the blueprints so that our life must be a kind that produces fruits. That is when our coast is being enlarged. When we too have an impact on our children or people around us, that through the blessing we have received, we are able to pass it to the next generation. It is then that our coast is being enlarged. [Speaker 1] That was our major emphasis last week. We have been considering the prayer of Jabez. And last week we were looking at "Lord, enlarge my coast." One very crucial thing about a man's coast being enlarged is that there is a need for God to begin to do something with him. Not just him as a person, but also the need for God to begin with a man and his house. A man and his house. I said for the married, it is crucial that once God saves a man, God is interested in that man and his house. Joshua said in Joshua 24:15, "As for me and my house..." We saw the jailer in Acts 16. He said salvation comes to you and your house. We saw something about Abraham. One thing God said about Abraham is that Abraham is able to command his household. So we were trying to bring out a very important thing that for those of us that are married and have children, we should see it as a very crucial thing, not just for me to be saved, but me and my house. For those of us who are yet to enter into the institution of marriage, who are yet to begin to have biological children, then we should know that one thing about God is fruitfulness. We were saved to serve. Until you can say it was by my life that this person came to know the Lord and this person is standing in the faith, established, then you don't have a coast. Your coast is indeed very narrow. And so it becomes very crucial for us. Then one thing we linked together last week was that for people who have been set into families, because the Bible says there is a difference between a virgin and the married, both for the male and the female. For people who are married, the joy of God is that that thing that God will do with them in the life of other people should begin in their home. He said, "Why did He make them one? Because He seeks a godly seed." So for the married, their primary point of assignment, in fact, their Jerusalem before they will begin to move to Judea and then to Samaria to the uttermost part of the earth, is their immediate family. Those were our points of emphasis last week and we charged ourselves that if men will struggle to make sure that their physical inheritance doesn't pass to other people's children, they will write a will, they will protect it, they will make sure that children know where their lands and where their things are because they don't want it to die. They want to pass it on. How much more should we as believers make sure that our Christian heritage doesn't die with us? How much more should we make sure that we pass it on to our biological children? Now, today being our last Monday in the month of July, which is our time of prayer, I want us to take our text, I've mentioned that before, from Luke chapter 18. Luke chapter 18 is a very familiar scripture. Almost everybody can quote Luke 18:1. He said, "Then he spoke a parable to them that men always ought to pray and not to lose heart." That is the King James version. Jesus told His disciples a story. From that story, all He wanted to show them is that they should always pray and not give up. They should always pray and never give up. So we are looking at... today is our day of prayer, and we are looking at something that the Lord said here. Why is the matter of giving up tied to the matter of prayer? Men ought always to pray and never give up. Why is giving up tied to prayer? It brings some things to mind. It makes some things clear that something about prayer, something crucial about prayer, is not just that you have prayed, it is also that you don't lose heart. There is this thing about prayer. You see, when it comes to God, we praying to God, Jesus told a story to make His disciples know that when it comes to prayer, it is important for you to know that when it comes to talking to God about something, when it comes to bringing something to God in prayer, whether as petition, whether as request, whether as supplication, whichever way, it is important to know that you should bear in mind that there is a tendency to lose heart. There is a tendency to lose heart. There is a tendency to get tired. There is a tendency to say, "Oh God," that tendency is there when it comes to talking to God. It is not as if God doesn't answer prayers. It is not as if God doesn't hear us when we cry. It is not as if God doesn't listen. In fact, there is this scripture that gives me so much rest, two scriptures in the Bible. One in the Old Testament, one in the New Testament. The first one is in Isaiah 65:24. He said, "While you are yet speaking, I will hear. In fact, before you call, I will answer." He is not a God afar off. He is a God that is near. What makes God to be far is iniquity. Before you call, He's already answering. Another scripture that gives me rest about prayer is this one in the New Testament, in 1 John chapter 5, that says we know that whatever we ask according to His will, He hears us. And if we know that He hears us, then we can be sure that we have whatsoever we ask from Him. But it is just important for us to know that as much as God answers before we call, as much as God hears us while we were praying, as much as God is there and His ear is hearing everything... the Bible says He that gives ear, will He not hear? He that give eyes, will He not see? Why is God saying that He is different from other gods? What is one thing that God says about Himself? He said they have eyes, but they cannot see. They have ears, but they cannot hear. Those who worship them are like them. He said, "But as for Me, call unto Me and I will answer you." So, the point I am making is that as much as we know that God answers prayer, as much as we know that God hears us when we call, as much as we know that God listens, it is so crucial for us to know that there is something about God answering us speedily, God hearing us as we are talking, God listening to us as we are praying. God is listening and He is doing something about it. In that thing that God is doing, it is important to know that there is a tendency for you to give up. Why? Why is Jesus talking about this issue? Why is Jesus talking like this? God hears us, when we pray He listens, when we call He answers. And yet He is saying you ought always to pray and not give up. What is He telling us? It is just trying to make us see that the manner, the way, the structure in which God answers speedily, quickly, and hears us as we call, is not as man thinks. It's not the way you look at it physically. God moves in a mysterious way. His ways are windy. You know what I mean by windy? When something is not straight. His ways are windy. Another hymn says God moves in a mysterious way. The way He moves. Sometimes He will be there, and it looks as if He is not there. He will be there. He is answering the prayer. And yet it looks as if God is not there at all. You will think He is not there. You will think He's absent. So that is why the matter is you don't give up. Then another thing about this answering us is that God answers us in the way that best fits the totality of His plans for our lives. Mind you, that plan is not with you. You don't know it. The plan is with Him. I want to use this personal example as an illustration, then I will also use another example in the Bible. Personal example: Some years back we were in Jos and my wife was working with a private school that had a church arm, a primary arm, and a secondary arm. The primary arm is very close to where we live. That was where she was first employed and we were there. But later they got to know, when they got to look at her certificate, that she is a graduate, left school with a 2:1, and a counselor, and they needed such at the secondary section. They felt they were under-utilizing her in the primary section. They would rather take her to the secondary section. The secondary section is so far from our house, it's like traveling. Because at that time the family income was so low, what I normally do is that then we still have our second born then as a baby. I will drop them with the car in that school. She would employ a maid to be with her who stays with her in a room provided, then she would go to class to teach and then pick her. What I normally do since it was not far from the house and not also far from where I was teaching, I would drop them with the car, I would leave the car there, I would trek down to where I would teach. So when she closes, she will call me. I would have closed earlier, I will trek back, then pick everybody with the car, we go home. It was so... They encamp by the Red Sea. And true to the word, not too long, Pharaoh was coming with all the army. The Israelites said, "God, God, kill them before they get here. Oh, angels of God, scatter them. Oh, arrows of God, finish them. Oh, Baba, before they get here, let Michael cut off their head." Instead of Michael cutting off their head, they were getting closer. They were getting closer. They were getting closer and closer. And at a point, what did they do instead of continuing praying? "Moses, is this not what we told you? You should have left us in Egypt to die. Now we will be dying by the Red Sea. Look at what you have caused. Is it not better to die in Egypt than to come and die here?" and they began to complain against God, complain against Moses. "Which God? You should not have brought us out of Egypt." and they began to... what happened to them? They no more continued in prayer. They have given up. They've begun to say things. That is why to check that same story in Ezekiel, God said they provoked Me by the Red Sea. I thought of destroying them. But for My name's sake so that it will not be defiled before the Egyptians, I allowed them to cross the sea. God would have killed them there. Why? Instead of men praying, they stopped praying because it looked like God was not answering. They began to complain. They began to curse God. They began to speak against God. "Which type of life did You even bring us here? Why did You even save us? Is it not better not to be saved?" and I hear some people will say, "What did God even save me for? Is it not better not to be saved?" People say all kinds of things when it looks as if God doesn't answer prayer. But eventually, contrary to what they thought, this God answered the prayer. This God answered. Did He answer according to their request? No. Rather, what He did was that He brought darkness between them. The cloud that was before them left their front and came between them and these people. They thought they would catch up, but God came in between. For them, God should have killed them. But God did not kill them that way because God had a higher plan in His mind. And so, after that God has done that, God gave these ones light. And then even now Moses was confused. And God said, "Moses, why are you crying to Me? Tell them to keep going." for Moses who could not tell them because there was no road. And God said, "Okay, stretch forth what is in your hand." and he did that. "Oh, this is the plan?" and then the way opened. And they began to walk on dry land. And they walked and they walked and they walked to the other side. And when they had finished crossing, God now removed the darkness. Contrary to the way, you know, they could not have thought... could they have been able to imagine all of that? They could not. That is, God moves in a mysterious way. God does not answer us according to our own limit and thinking. The way we think it will, God will just... sometimes we think, "Ah, God will not allow me to just do like this and God will just answer like this." No. Sometimes we plan how the answer will look like. But God doesn't answer that way. And then when they were at the other side and Pharaoh began to run, then God now did something. God now removed the wheel of their chariot. And the thing was slowing down, the thing was slowing down. And then they began to say, "Let us run back." No, they could not run back. God now told Moses, "Okay, stretch forth the thing." and then the water came and swallowed them up. And what did God do with that water that swallowed them up? God got a name for Himself. Is that not true? Do you know that that was why the people of Jericho, the people of Ai, all of them, the Gibeonites, why were they afraid? They said, "This God is the God that parted the Red Sea." So God wanted to prepare them ahead to make people be afraid of them. But they began to complain against God. "This God is wicked. This God is stupid. This God is smart. He should have killed Pharaoh. He should have stopped him right there. He should have..." You know, sometimes we are just like that. Men ought always to pray. When it looks as if answers are not coming, keep praying. When it looks as if everything is dark, just keep praying. Just keep trusting. When it looks as if there's no way... "Has God forgotten me?" Oh God, He did not. He did not. Let us believe He's working out something. The stake that the shepherd has over the sheep is by far much more than the sheep have over themselves. Are you aware? Look at you and your children. Who has more stake over the children? For example, Ola will wish to always be alive and no evil happen to her. But the extent to which she wishes it cannot be compared with the extent to which you wish it as the father or the mother. Do you know that? Do you know that? You now, you are praying that evil should not happen to you. But I'm telling you, meet your father. You will see how much your father will pray much more for you than for himself. "God, oh, God, let me not die, oh, this boy, nothing must happen to my children." Those who own have more stake over the things that are owned. God has more stake over us than we have stake over our life. We should understand that. We should know it. Men ought always to pray. So tonight as we pray, this evening as we pray, don't begin to tell yourself, "But all when I've been praying, I've been praying, but doesn't God even hear?" No. Don't behave like the Israelites at the Red Sea. Don't begin to bring complaints. Sometimes, if not for God's mercy that day, they would have finished their testimony. For when I read it later in the prophet, God said, "I would have destroyed them by the Red Sea, but I considered My name. What will the Egyptians say? They will say I don't have power to lead them through this thing." So for My name's sake, I allowed them to go. I allowed them to go. It was just mercy that brought them to the other side. And I keep praying, honestly I keep praying every day, "Oh Lord, always be gracious to me. Lord, be gracious to me." Because sometimes I may not be different from these people in some things I say, in some things I do. That's why many times I'll just say, "God, please be gracious to me. Let be gracious to me." And that's why we are starting from this evening. Lord God Almighty, Baba, be gracious unto me. Be gracious unto me. Be gracious unto me. Lord God, I cry afresh again today as we are concluding the month of July, as we are concluding the month of July and we'll be stepping into the month of August, the eighth month of the year. Lord, I cry out unto You. Cause my life to experience Your graciousness. Lord, afresh, afresh, afresh, afresh, my walk with You, Your graciousness. My physical life, Your graciousness. My finances, Your graciousness. Oh God, oh God, my home, Your graciousness. Oh God, my past, Your graciousness. Oh God, my prayers, Your graciousness. Oh God, my walk with You, Your graciousness. It is still about this graciousness, but it's in another dimension. I don't know whether particularly you are somebody who sometimes, when you are going through some situations, your mind flashes back to some things in your past. Say, "Eh, maybe if I've done this thing like this, my life would not have been like this." I don't know if you're somebody who has such kind of flashback. "Ah, oh, this was where I missed my step. Maybe that is why God is doing this." And soon it looks as if you are saying maybe God is punishing you, maybe God is making you to reap what you have done wrong, something like that. I don't know. Or maybe you feel that maybe there is something somewhere you did not do well and sometimes when you look at your life, you begin to push your predicament on that thing, that, "Ah, this way my life is now because of, maybe because of this, maybe because of this." You see, I just want to announce to you that God has a greater stake over your life than you have. He has a greater stake over your life than you have. And I want you, if you have such kind of thing coming up in your heart about any matter, I want you particularly to pray. Look at what you may think it is and say, "God, God, our fathers, they experienced Your mercy under a covenant that is not as better as our own. Under a covenant, that covenant is a covenant of death. The covenant in Christ, a covenant of life." The Bible says even those things that the Law of Moses could not justify us from, Jesus justified us from them. I want you to look so strongly into this new covenant. It's a better covenant. It's a stronger covenant. It promises life than judgment. And I want you to look into it. Look into this covenant afresh and look at such matters and look at your life and say, "God, Your mercy will speak for me." Don't be afraid. Don't doubt it. Don't doubt it. Say, "God, Your mercy will speak for me. Even if it looks like I didn't get this one right, even if it looks like I missed it here, Lord, Your mercy will speak for me. Your mercy will speak for me. Your mercy in this matter. Lord, speak for me in the name of Jesus. Lord, let Your mercy, let Your mercy, ah, Lord, Lord, I have received mercy in Christ Jesus and this mercy will speak for me." Come with confidence. Come with courage. Come with confidence. Come with courage. Come, raise up your hand, lift up your hand. Tell all the gates to lift up their head. Tell the gate that holds you down. Tell that condemnation that holds you down, that there is no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. I want you to lift up those things again this evening with assurance of hope and say, "God, I refuse to doubt You any longer. I believe You are working for my good. This thing that seems to have delayed, Lord, I refuse to be hopeless. I restore my hope again today. Rather, Lord, I worship You because You are working for my good. Rather, Lord, I worship You because You are working out something. Lord, I worship You. I bless Your name because You are going somewhere. Lord, You are working out Your perfect plans for me." I refuse to doubt. I refuse to murmur. I refuse to fear any longer. Lord God Almighty, for men ought always to pray and not to faint. Because You move in a mysterious way, because Your ways are windy, because Lord, the totality of the plans, they are with You, I don't have the total picture. Lord, You have the total picture. Oh God Almighty, I just worship You. I refuse to fear any longer. Even though Pharaoh is approaching very, very fast. Even though I'm looking forward, it seems there is no way forward. Lord, and it looks like everything is pressing down. It looks like time is running out fast and I don't know what to do. It looks as if I'm not going forward. It looks as if I'm stagnant. It looks as if my enemy is gaining ground. It looks as if Pharaoh is approaching. It looks as if Pharaoh is going to take over. It looks as if the Red Sea, there is no way in it. Oh Lord, today I say I refuse to fear. For You can part my Red Sea. You can part my Red Sea. You can part my Red Sea. You can part my Red Sea. You can divide it asunder. I believe You. Pray with an assurance of hope that Lord, in winding up the seventh month and in entering into the eighth month of the year, Lord, let the heaven over me, let the heaven over me be full of rain, and the earth under me be full of fatness. Let the heaven over me be full of rain. Lord, as I round up the seventh month and I move into the eighth month of the year 2020. Baba, let the heaven over me be full of rain. Let it be full of rain and the earth under me be full of fatness. Ah, Brother, I don't know who I'm speaking to, but I just have this impression in my spirit. God can do the impossible.
