My Peace I Give Unto U the Path to Peace (biblical Examples 3)

We thank you again for another opportunity of being in the discipleship class. Lord God Almighty, as we fellowship together with the scriptures, in the scriptures, and with one another, Lord, we pray your Spirit will work within us in the name of Jesus Christ. Lord, we pray that your name will be glorified in the name of Jesus. Lord, we pray that your church will be edified in the name of Jesus. Lord God Almighty, let it please you, O Lord, to attend to our situations. Thank you, eternal Father. We trust you for our brethren who are here physically and everyone joining us online from one location or the other. Lord, you will reach to us all in the name of Jesus Christ. Thank you, eternal Father. In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen. Yeah, we have been considering this topic, "My peace I give unto you. Not as the world gives." That was our first consideration. "My peace I give unto you. Not as the world gives." That was our first consideration, and then we have been able to look at several other issues under this matter of "My peace I give unto you." And for the past two weeks now, we have been looking at "Paths to Peace." And we began by noting that it is crucial that there was an instruction: "Be anxious about nothing." Because we have said for us to find rest for our soul, all we need to do is to take his yoke upon us and learn from him. And we said, just in a very simple language, what that means is just do what he says. Do what he says. Do what he says. And we began to look at the matter that in Philippians chapter four, Philippians 4:6-7, he said be anxious about nothing. And then we saw from that scripture that when God want to deal with any matter in our life, God begins by dealing with our heart. Many times, God may not first change our situation. The first thing for God to do is to change us. It is after God has been able to change us that he begins to change our situation. And then we saw last week too, looking at biblical example, we began to consider the life of Jacob. And the first and most important lesson we drew from that life of Jacob is that we must understand that the plan that we are involved in, the basis of our life is not something that began just yesterday or even when you got born again. It was something that began before time was. It was something that involved you; you are just a small part of that great plan. And if you understand that, if you can see that every aspect of that great plan is being fulfilled on a daily basis, you can be sure, you can be at rest that your life cannot fail. Your life is—it is impossible for your life to fail. That is the truth about it. We must be able to trust in the Lord. There were two scriptures I could not touch last week. I will just make reference to them as we continue this week. I'll just make reference to them and then we move on from there. The first one is in Hebrews, Hebrews chapter six. Let's see Hebrews, Hebrews chapter six. Let's see what the Bible says there. That will be from around verse 13 or thereabouts. Around verse 13 or thereabouts. Then after which we'll come to Philippians chapter 1:6. But let's first go to that Hebrews chapter six. Where the Bible was talking about the ability of God and the intention of God about our life. So that we can see that we are not just an accidental program in the things of God. Let's look at it from around verse—I can save some time. Okay, let me take it from around verse 16. Let's take it from verse 16. From verse 16. The Bible says, "For men indeed swear by the greater, and an oath for confirmation is for them an end of all dispute." Is that not true? Is that not true? Once this is the oath, okay, I make this oath, I make this vow, it ends all dispute. Now, the Bible now says, verse 17, "Therefore God, determining"—I want you to see something there—God was determining to show more abundantly to the heirs of promise the immutability of his counsel, he confirmed it by an oath. NLT says, "God also bound himself with an oath, so that those who received the promise could be perfectly sure that he would never change his mind." Do you get that? We that receive the promise—you know, sometimes, hey, how am I sure? I hope, hey, did he really say it well? I don't know, and all of that. And honestly, it is that very thing that make you to lose out because a double-minded man does not receive anything from God. He said God was determining to show us that his plan for our life—I'm trying to make you see why Jacob did not understand, because that's where I'm going to today. Jacob did not understand this. You will see how Jacob began to act the way we act and you will see what God did to resolve the matter again. But I'm trying to make you see what Jacob did not see. That he was part of a plan that—you understand the point I'm making? And that's exactly how our life is. So, God want to show that his plan for our life cannot change. He cannot change his mind. So, what did the Bible says in the verse 18? What does it say in verse 18 of Hebrews? He said "that by two immutable things, in which it is impossible for God to lie," what are the two immutable things? Number one: God's promise. That, see, I'm coming to take you home. God's promise: I will not leave you comfortless. God's promise: I'm your shepherd, you will not lack. God's promise, you understand? God made promises. That's the first thing. What's the second thing? God now sealed it with a what? With an oath. Now, he says what did the Bible says? "We might have strong consolation, who have fled for refuge to lay hold on the hope that is set before us." He says in the NLT, "So God has given us both his promise and his oath. These two things are unchangeable because it is impossible for God to lie. Therefore, we who have fled for refuge can take new courage, for we can hold onto his promise with confidence." Things may be going haywire today. Things may be scattering and it looks like, ha, hey, hey, will God still be able to keep me? Will God still be able to hold my life? Look, we can take a fresh courage. I like that, that's why I read the NLT. He said a fresh courage. Is your courage dying about how it's going to turn? The Bible says take a fresh courage. Take a fresh courage. The second scripture I want to show you is in Philippians chapter 1:6. That's a very popular scripture. Philippians 1:6. Philippians chapter one, verse six. The Bible says something there. The Bible says, "being confident of this very thing, that he who has begun a good work in you will complete it until the day of Christ." You can be confident of that. You can be confident of that. You can be very, very confident of that. So, let's move on to where we have been considering. Genesis. We have been looking at biblical example and we have been looking at the life of Jacob. And last week we were able to come to the close of where Jacob finally said, "Then Israel said, 'It is enough. Joseph my son is still alive. I will go and see him before I die. I will go. It is enough. I will go and see him before I die.'" And so, what followed is what we want to consider today. And in doing that, please, I want you to take something very seriously that I said last week. It looks like a bypass statement, but please it is not a bypass statement. When I left the meeting, that matter was still very strong upon my heart. You know I said something last week. I said as far as Jacob was concerned, there was no reason under heaven again for him to believe that he will still see Joseph. Is that not the truth? As far as he was concerned, Joseph's business was a finished business. When they brought that animal—when they brought the clothes to him with the blood of the animals, so for him, Joseph was dead. And I said something last week and I said please I want you to lay it to heart because even after the meeting it was still strong upon my spirit, that things that you have concluded in life that, look, this thing can't be possible again. I said the Lord will surprise you. That the Lord will do something that, you know, things that look like "koleseshemo." "Kosionabayo." There is no way out. Let's look, he said concluded case. The Lord work and Jacob what he has given up all hope about, God gave him hope. God gave him joy. God gave him abundance in that matter. So shall be your testimony in the name of Jesus Christ. So we quickly move to chapter 46. I want you to see something in chapter 46. "Paths to peace" is what we have been considering. "Paths to peace." And we have been looking at the life of Jacob. The first path to peace we are looking at—we saw in the life of Jacob was that big lesson: "I am part of an eternal plan. The plan of God cannot fail." That was the first thing. "I am part of an eternal plan. That plan of God cannot fail. Because by two things in which it's impossible for God to lie, he made a promise, it has been sealed with an oath, that he cannot change his mind concerning our life." "Being confident of this very thing, that he who began the good work is able to finish it." Verse 46. Another thing about the life of Jacob that we need to see and we need to learn from. Let's look at it. "Pathways to peace." The Bible says, "So, Israel took his journey." Now, why is he taking the journey now? Why is he taking the journey? Because where we concluded last week, when he saw everything that Joseph sent—you know, where we concluded—when he saw everything, "Ah," he said "yes, I am going." But look, I want to show you something here. "So, Israel took his journey with all that he had and came to Beersheba." The journey had begun, isn't it? Isn't it? The journey had begun. "And offered sacrifices to the God of his father Isaac." Then look at what happened. "Then God spoke to Israel in the visions of the night and said, 'Jacob, Jacob.' He said, 'Here I am.' So he said, 'I am the God, I am God, the God of your father. Do not fear to go down to Egypt, for I will make of you a great nation there. I will go with you to Egypt, and I will also surely bring you up again. And Joseph will put his hand on your eyes.' Then Jacob arose from Beersheba, and the sons of Israel carried their father Jacob, their little ones, and their wives in the carts which Pharaoh had sent to carry him. So they took their livestock and their goods which they had acquired in the land of Canaan and went to Egypt, Jacob and all his descendants with him." I want you to look closely at this story. I want you to look at what is happening. When Jacob saw everything that Joseph sent, the Bible said he made up his mind, surely Joseph is alive, I am going to meet Joseph. And true to the word, what happened? He started his journey to Egypt. But do you notice what happened? That even though Jacob started that journey, Jacob was still wondering. Jacob was having silent fears. Jacob was trying to reconcile the matter. And what is the matter? Please, what is the matter he was trying to reconcile? You remember, if you go down the memory lane, when Abraham got to Canaan, there was famine in the land. And Abraham was making up his mind to run out of Canaan. He ran to Egypt. When he got there, there was so much problem for him. You remember that God had to tell him, "What brought you here? Go back again to where you belong." You remember again along that same journey there was famine, another one again in the days of who? In the days of who? Isaac. Isaac wanted to go down. God said, "Don't go down to anywhere. Stay here. This is the promised land. Stay here, don't go anywhere. If you stay here, I will bless you." And Isaac sowed in that land. What happened? And he reaped a hundredfold. Why? Because God blessed him. Please don't forget that as at this time, please understand it, as at this time there was nothing like the Old Testament. Moses that came hundreds of years later—no, hundreds of years later, because they spent 400 years in Egypt suffering before Moses was now born. You understand me? It was in Moses that we have the writing down of Genesis, Exodus, you are understanding me? So, as at this time, what was their Bible? Oral literature, oral tradition. So, these people, the story was carried from Abraham to who? To Isaac. That same story was carried from Isaac to who? To Jacob. So even when Jacob said, "Now I know that Joseph is alive, I am going to meet Joseph," Jacob was still remembering what his fathers told him. When me, Abraham your father, went to Egypt, it was not funny. What I met there was not good at all. When me your direct father, Isaac, was to enter, was to go, God said don't go. Stay here, I will bless you. Now that Joseph has sent to come and pick me—he started the journey—but what's going on? There was no peace. [Audio becomes distorted with rhythmic interference and echoes] There was no peace. There was no rest in his mind. He started the journey. They have moved to Beersheba, but Jacob was still struggling. He was struggling with what he had been told, what he knew, the instruction that was given to the initial two holders of that covenant that he is the third person in the order. The initial two gave warning and signals that never go to where? Egypt. And so, what is making it most—more difficult for Jacob? Do I tell you? It was because it was famine that took Abraham there. It was famine again that took Isaac to want to go. Now again what is going on? Famine. So, what do you think will be the heart of our brother Jacob? "Ah, agboroni pani, afowofalo n paniya." Joseph said I should come. Hmm. This was how it went. And as he was taking that movement, there was no what? There was no what? There was no peace. There was no peace. So you notice that, how do we know that that was a strong struggle for Jacob? Look at it what we read. He said, "So Israel took his journey with all that he had and came to Beersheba. He offered sacrifices to God to the God of his father Isaac." Hey, hey, Jehovah, Jehovah, Jehovah, God of my my father Isaac, God of my great-grandfather, God of my grandfather Abraham, this this journey, hey, hey, am I showing you something? I am showing you something about biblical example to peace. The Bible says be anxious about nothing. But in everything through prayer, supplication and thanksgiving, let your request be made known to God. Are you seeing that that's what is going here with Jacob? Are you seeing that that's what's going on with Jacob here? Jacob was restless. And I'm telling you, many times even when we have started the journey of faith with God, you may get to some point where the familiar become threatening. Where you understand me? I give you another another good one. You remember Peter. "Lord, should I come?" Why did the Bible say? Jesus said, "Come." He started the journey very well. He was walking on the water. But what happened? That same water started becoming a strong wind. What happened? Peter began to look away from what was said. What am I trying to say? What am I saying? What I'm saying is that if you look around us today, you have been doing your job, you have been a worker, you have been a student, you have been a Nigerian, and it looks like it has been okay. But in recent time, insecurity is taking a dimension and your heart—your heart is failing. Are you understanding me? It's taking a dimension. You hear of banditry this way. You hear of kidnappers the other way. You hear of Fulani herdsmen the other way. You hear, are you understanding me? It's taking a dimension. Oh, you have been a government worker and you have been looking forward to pension. Now you heard that even the pension was to be borrowed or has been borrowed. And that you are not even sure what will happen again when you hear that your own father who retired 25 years ago till he died he didn't get pension. Are you understanding me? And you are listening to your colleagues around you say pension, me I retired since 2005, I'm still waiting to be paid. Are you understanding me? You begin to wonder, by the time this thing that looked to be very, very sure before, how is it going to be? Are you understanding me? I mean when you have started the step of faith, you have started in a direction. It could be a marital journey, it could be a business journey, it could be a career journey, it could be a ministry journey, it could be I don't know what the journey may be. But you see, I'm looking at what is happening to us today. We have begun to hear of war. You know when the kidnapping started, we were hearing it in the far far north. It looks like we are very safe. By some we began to hear in Edo state. We began to hear, you understand? It was coming closer. Tension began to rise in the heart of people. It looks like what looked to be very, very, very far away, killing in villages, pastoral in villages, burning down of villages, had happened in Akokoland. It's getting closer. And then you understand me? What I'm trying to say is that a lot of things could, you know, things that look like we have started before on a peaceful note, but our minds are not at rest. That was what we are having with Jacob. He started the journey, but there was a strong consideration, something had not been settled. And so, he made the sacrifice. And then you notice that when God was to speak to him, even though we did not hear what he told God—you know we didn't hear that—but we can hear what God told him. What did God tell him? God said, "Jacob, Jacob. Brother Jacob." He said, "Here I am." Look at the first thing that he said. Do you notice what God first said? "I am God." "The God of your father." I know you are holding to what your father told you. I know what your father raised with you is a problem. And I'm telling you something. And something occur to you that this this universe that is making you afraid, that God is the God of the universe. Time is making you afraid. Have you realized that God is the God of time? What if—that is why you notice that that thing that was giving him fear, he said I am God and the God of that thing. I want to ask you. What is making you afraid? Why is money making you afraid? Is it the issue of childlessness? What will God say? I am God. Is it war or rumors of war? I am God. The man of war. I mean try to position anything. And please, brethren, what is it that we can learn about this? We can learn from this about the pathway to peace? He says, "For I will make of you a great nation there." He was thinking it's going to be destruction there. But I will make you a great nation there. "I will go with you," and that is where Jacob was having problem. You know he told Isaac, "Stay in this land and I will be with you." So, what is he telling Jacob now? "Go to that place. What will happen? I will be with you." It's a matter of whether I will be with you, I will be with you. And then he told him again that, "And I will also surely bring you up again." So, I have not changed the promised land. Are you getting the the answer? That the question in the heart of Jacob and the answer that God is giving him. "Has God changed the promised land? Is it going to be Egypt?" God said no, "I will go with you there, but surely it's not the promised land has not changed. It's going to be back to be where? It's going to be back to Canaan. And Joseph will put his hand upon your eyes." He said, "Then Jacob arose from Beersheba." Now in arising from Beersheba now, who will Jacob be? The old person or a new person? A new person. A new person who has found what for his soul? Who has found what for his soul? Rest. Peace. So, brethren, what lesson can we pick in this? Because we are looking at biblical example. Number one, brethren. Do you notice that—notice it with where we are coming from. Has God changed the situation? Has God changed the situation? Where is he still going? The chariot that came from Pharaoh, where is he not going to enter? Has anything changed in the situation? But Jacob is now a new person. What actually did God change? God changed him. And that is what I'm trying to make you see. That's what I'm trying to that's where we started from. I hope you remember. That's where we started from. That do you know that some things that are troubling your life today and you are shaking and you are having headache and it looks like this thing is going to kill you? The problem is not with the situation. Where is the problem? The problem is with you. The problem is with you. Hallelujah. The problem is with you. Something that are intimidating you now. Your academics, your marriage, your business, your vision, your purpose, your career. The thing is looking like—and you have been running from one church to another church and you have been moving here and there. Oh, I want you to see that when God want to bring down this thing that is making Jacob to be thinking, he started the journey, he was restless, what God did was to change him. He is still going to go in that chariot that came from Egypt. You might be thinking that God the best thing for me to do, there's nothing worth again in life, let me go and kill myself. You hear of some—look at the case that happened sometime in Abuja of the young pastor that committed suicide. It's very, very unfortunate. It's an unfortunate thing. You might be thinking this thing—the problem that is really facing you is not the situation that is facing you. The problem really facing you is your mindset about your problem. Why am I telling you so, brother? Why am I telling you so, brother? You will see ah, but sir, I don't understand. You know what the Bible says? Can somebody check for me, 1 Corinthians chapter 10, verse 13? 1 Corinthians 10:13. 1 Corinthians chapter 10, verse 13. Yes, can I have you please? "No temptation, no trial, no difficulty has overtaken you but such as is common to man." Please, what's the first thing about your trial and your temptation? It is something that is what? Common to man. "Aiboni pani, afowofalo n paniya." Hey, ha, this your own, eh, this your marriage situation, this your case, this case of your wife, this case of your husband, this case of your academics, this your own problem. And they begin to make an announce to you, the Bible says there is no trial that overtaken you but what? They are such as what? That is common to man. Can I beg you this evening anywhere you are and you are listening to me? Can I beg you to first commonize that problem? Can I beg you to to agree with God that whatever may be happening around you is not peculiar? It's something that is common to men. There is nothing happening around your life today. That's why I'm giving you example. You see, ah, war around us, that's why I showed you a man like Elisha. That the whole Syrian army they surrounded Dothan where he was. Please, what can be more frightening than that? That the whole army of a nation is surrounding your compound to come and capture you. And yet, the man was at peace. And the man did not even pray for himself. Papa, papa, what do I do? He was praying for somebody else that was not stable. Lord open his eyes, this young man is not stable, help him to see, he was not. That's what I'm showing you. What is it that is—what is it that is new? You say, "Ah, the situation is that I am the only one to face the problem." You forgot that there was a time in the history of Israel that the only army that was facing the army of the enemy was one man called Samson. Even though it was only Samson that you are seeing, and yet nobody could kill him from behind. So what do you think was going on? Was he using a jaz or a sham? Why could they not—I don't know whether are you understanding me at all? When a whole nation—this was a time he was not as if he was using atomic bomb, shooting atomic bomb, it was inside you know in those days it was physical exchange. And then you have 3,000 men facing one man. And the man was killing them, killing them, killing them, killing them. What happened to from his behind? That they could not kill him from behind. You know that thing is not ordinary. Was it ordinary? Was it ordinary? You know it's maybe, I'm just trying to picture, maybe Gabriel was here, Michael was here, and then you know I don't know how God, I'm just trying to imagine what was going on because it was not only Samson in that war. Why am I saying so? You remember that when Joshua took over from Moses, a particular angel appeared to him with sword. And while Joshua was questioning him, "No, I'm the captain of the host of the Lord that is going before you." So, I'm thinking that there was an invisible host around Samson because it's not just possible for one man—3,000 people. How? It's not just possible. There is something supernatural about it and that thing is God. So, don't you understand that even if it's only you that is to face all your problem, there is something supernatural about you? There is something supernatural about you. That's the point I'm trying to make. There is something supernatural. There is something that cannot be explained. There is something, there is an invisible hand that is holding you, and that hand can carry you through and it will carry you through in the name of Jesus. Paths to peace. Paths to peace. Paths to peace. That's what we are looking at Jacob. And we are looking at it. And as I said, the one thing you must get to understand in looking at Jacob is that, brethren, there is no trial, is it marital, is it academic, that's why I tell believers, except you are not a believer, the route out of marital crisis for instance is not divorce because in divorce again you are setting yourself against God. You can't set yourself against God and ask God to help you. It could be challenging, it could be difficult, it could be hard, but I am telling you there is no trial that is around you. The first thing to do about it, brethren, is to do what? Commonize it. It is such as is common to man. Path to peace. There is nothing new under the sun. That is the word of God. Nothing can happen that is new. Nothing. Nothing. That is why God can declare the end from the beginning for you. There is nothing. Even, look, brethren, for you to get it very clear. If you look at where we started from, the Bible said Jesus was speaking to the people, he said it will be like the days of Noah. So, even to the coming of Jesus, what will be repeating is like the days of Noah. What is the new thing? Commonize whatever. I pray you receive a grace and understanding, a strength to commonize. Look at that thing. It is not peculiar. You are not peculiar. Look at your fear. Laugh at it. Mock at your fear and say, "Look, you are not peculiar. You are a common thing. I will overcome you." I will overcome you. I will overcome you. I like this Yoruba song: [Singing "Ibi ma de, ma de. Ibi ma de, ma de o. Kaye gbe ogun, ke niyan ha le. Ibi ma de, ma de o Baba. Ibi ma de, ma de. Ibi ma de, ma de o. Kaye gbe ogun, ke niyan ha le. Ibi ma de, ma de o Baba."] Can you rise with that confidence? Can you understand that about yourself? Can you do you know that by two things in which it is impossible for God to lie, God has promised and he also took an oath that, "Look, I want you to know that my counsel for your life cannot change. This thing that I've begun with you, I will finish it." That's the truth. That's the truth about it. He will finish it. He will finish it. So, he said there is no trial that overtaken you but such as is common to man. What's the next thing there, please, brethren? Please read on. What's the next thing? 1 Corinthians 10:13. But God is faithful. Yes, so what is the faithfulness of God going to do for us? He will not allow you to be tempted, to be tried to be beyond what you can bear. He will not allow the temptation to be more than you can stand. The Bible says God is faithful. He will not allow your trials, be it spiritual, be it physical, be it financial, be it political, be it economic, be it futural, I don't know which type of dimension that thing, but God will make sure, eh, I'm telling somebody, the way it is now in Nigeria, it is we the Christians that can stand it that are there now. Those that cannot stand it they have died. We that are there now are the ones that can stand it. If you are not part of those who can stand it, you would have died long ago. Because God is faithful. He will make sure that you are we are not tried beyond what we can bear. It is we that can take it that are facing it. Look, if you don't understand it about your life, understand that you are not just anybody on the street. You are the apple of his heart. You have been engraved in the palm of his hand. Your life is hidden in Christ in God. These are things you must understand about who you are. And listen to me, even if you are just anybody on the street, can I announce to you that even ordinary birds cannot die except God allow? Not to talk of human beings. Let us wake up and I'm trying to make you understand the path to peace. Take my yoke upon you, take my yoke upon you and learn from me. Learn from me and you will find rest for your soul. Nothing is going to give you rest. You are the one to find it. You are the one to find it. You are thinking of Nigeria will give you rest. My husband will give me rest. My employer will give me rest. You are wasting time. He said, "Take my yoke upon you. Learn from me and you will find rest. Because your problem is not your situation, it is with you." Thank you, Father. Our regular activities are discipleship class every Monday, 5:00 PM; adolescents and singles club every first Saturday of every month at 10:00 AM; marriage forum, second Saturday of every month at 10:00 AM; family life seminars, regular school outreaches, and everyday counseling.
