Reflections on the book of Colossians (Part 11)

And we trust the Lord that as we all gather together again today, it will be a time of refreshment in God's presence in the name of Jesus Christ. We trust in Him that as it has always been Him, even today again, it will yet be Him in the name of Jesus Christ. Let's take this song together as we start this evening. You are Alpha and Omega. We worship You, our God. You are worthy to be praised. You are Alpha and Omega. We worship You, our God. You are worthy to be praised. We give You all the glory. We worship You, our God. You are worthy to be praised. Father, we worship You, our God. For of You, from You, by You, through You, and for You are all things. We worship Your majesty. We thank You as we gather unto You. Lord, we pray, meet us where we need You most. Lord, by the reason of Your word, as we fellowship with Scriptures, Lord, in Your mercy, instruct our hearts. Grant us, O Lord, an encounter. Lord, do in us a work that will last time and eternity. Thank You, eternal Father. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen. So, we have been looking at the book of Colossians. We have been reflecting on the book of Colossians, and we are in chapter three. Two weeks ago, we stopped at chapter three, verse six. Last week, we took from verse seven, eight, and nine. We stopped at verse nine: "Do not lie one to another, since you have put off the old man with his deeds." Since you have put off the old man with his deeds. As we move on this evening, I want us to see something that affects the second set of what to put off. Like we saw initially, the things that we were to put off, they had to do with things that are outrightly immoral. And then the second set of things that we are to put off, they are things that have to do with how you feel in relating to people. And then when it was concluding that putting off again, in the verse nine, look at what the Bible says: "Do not lie one to another." Now, you see the reason. What is the reason? What is the reason why all of this should not be done? You notice that the reason is very clear. The reason is that since you have put off the old man with his deeds. The reason why you are putting off those things is because you have put off. I want us to note that the matter again is connecting you back to verse one to four. The reason why you are putting off these things is because you have put off the old man. I'm looking for how best to illustrate this. You see, the old man and his deeds, as far as the Scripture is concerned, is not something to be putting off. The old man and his deeds is something you have put off. Now, the idea many times is that from glory to glory He is changing me. So sometimes the idea is that I am putting them off. No, that's not the idea. The idea is that you have put them off. And because it has been put off, there is no reason why you should have them. The way forward for your Christian growth is a realization that the old man has been put off. That is, seeing the old man in your life is something you should understand that is an abomination. That is not your life. It's not like, "I have this thing, so I'm trying to stop it." No. The idea is that I don't have it because I have put it off. The reason why most Christians find themselves not growing in grace and in the knowledge of God is because of this idea of "I am putting them off." No. The reality of your life is that you have put them off. That's the reality. Whatever you are feeling about them, you quickly need to tell yourself it's an abomination. If you don't do like this, if you don't understand it like this, you will discover that till you will die as a Christian, the old man will not die. The old man, you will still be having struggle and struggle and struggle with the old man. But when you understand that I have put off something, and the thing seems to be showing off, when I get to the place of when the Bible says, "Who decree a thing and it come to pass when the Lord have not ordained it," isn't it? But if God have ordained something, when you decree, will it not come to pass? That is the attitude towards putting off these things. The attitude should be that God have ordained it that I have already put off the old man. That is the ordination of God. And so I stand in aggression. I stand to say no, this thing cannot continue. And not that "God, this thing is there, I am trying to overcome it." That's the point I'm trying to bring out. The Bible says in concluding verse nine, it said, "Since you have put off the old man." So you must understand that I have put off the old man. When you see the old man showing off, the reason is because you are not fighting the fight of faith. The reason is because you are tolerating. You have a mindset that "God will be changing me small-small, as God is changing me small-small, I will now change." But rather the mindset should be that God has changed me. That's the point I'm making. May the Lord grant understanding in the name of Jesus Christ. Now, having said "since you have put off the old man," look at what follows in the verse 10, where we want to pick it. It says, "Since you have put off the old man and have put on the new man, who is renewed in the knowledge according to the image of Him that created him." I want you to note something. It's not that you will put on the new man, but you have put on the new man. You have put on the new man. So what follows? "Wherefore there is neither Greek nor Jew, circumcised or uncircumcised, barbarian, Scythian, slave nor free, but Christ is all and in all." What does that mean? It means we don't know anybody again. Actually, what it ought to be is that nobody should know me again as Brother Wole or Brother Gospel or Brother Emmanuel or Sister Dayspring. Nobody should know us like that. How should they know us? What they should know is what happened in Antioch, that these people are behaving like Christ. So they should not be able to say anything. What should be a manifestation should be that these are Christians. This is somebody who is like Christ. When I'm dealing with this person, I'm dealing with Christ. Now, having said that, he now entered verse 12. From verse 12, from verse 1 to verse 11, it has been put off, put off, put off, because you have put off the old man. Since you have put off the old man, the ways of the old man should be put off, isn't it? Now you have put on the new man. What are now the ways of the new man? What are the ways of the new man? He says, "Therefore." He now wants to show us the ways of the new man. "Therefore, as elect of God, holy and beloved." So what is it about the new man? What is the first thing about the new man? The new man is an elect. The new man is holy. The new man is beloved. How do we now—what are the things you find about the new man? He says, "Put on tender mercies." Are you getting something? In the place of—let's now go back up—he has said, "Therefore put to death in your members which are on earth: fornication, uncleanness, passion, evil desire, covetousness, which is idolatry. Because of these things the wrath of God is coming upon the sons of disobedience, in which you once walked when you lived in them." But now you are also to put off, like we explained last week, "put off all these: anger, wrath, malice, blasphemy, filthy language out of your mouth. Do not lie one to another, since you have put off the old man with his deeds, and have put on the new man who is renewed in the image according to the image of Him who created him." I'm coming back to this verse 10. I just want to build on something. "Wherefore there is neither Greek nor Jew, nor circumcised or uncircumcised, barbarian or Scythian, slave, free, but Christ is all and in all." All we want to see now is Christ. "Therefore, as elect of God, holy and beloved," what are the ways of the new man? What is the first way of the new man? Tender mercies. A mercy that is tender. The way of the new man, he says, "Put on tender mercies." What followed tender mercies? Kindness. What follows kindness? Humility. What follows humility? Meekness. What follows meekness? Long-suffering. Look at what it says in NLT: "Since God chose you to be the holy people whom He loves, you must clothe yourselves with tenderhearted mercy, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience." Amplified: "Clothe yourselves therefore, as God’s own chosen ones, His own picked representatives, purified and holy and well-beloved by God Himself, by putting on behavior marked by tenderhearted pity and mercy, kind feeling, a lowly opinion of yourselves, gentle ways, and patience, which is tireless and long-suffering, and has the power to endure whatever comes with good temper." Now, you will notice, what I want to speak more to in this place is what I left in the verse 10. Go back to the verse 10. It says, "And you have put on the new man who is renewed in knowledge." Now, let me tell you one thing. When you see people who don't live right, it's ignorance. When you see people who don't live right, the matter is a matter of ignorance. To live right is a matter of knowledge. It's not a matter of determination or feeling. It's a matter of knowledge. And when I say knowledge, please understand me. The knowledge that we are talking about, like I was speaking somewhere yesterday when we were looking at living eternal life, the life of Jesus is not a struggle. It's a reality. When it is still a struggle, it is because knowledge has not come enough. What changes a man is revelation, an encounter with revelation. A man cannot live outside his revelation. It is the revelation that a man encounters that changes a man. We are renewed—the new man, I want you to understand something about the new man. Before many people were saying that "I am trying to do this, I am trying to do that," I've often told people, don't try to do anything. Because no matter how much you try, you will keep failing. What you need to do is what the Scripture has made clear over and over again. Look at it, Colossians and Ephesians. Colossians chapter one: "For this reason we also, since the day we heard it, we did not cease to pray for you, and to ask that you would be filled with the knowledge of His will." So, the new man is renewed according to what? Knowledge of God's image, that is knowledge of God's will. So the issue is not trying to do. No, no, no, that's not the issue. The issue is that you must pray. You must ask the Lord for an encounter. You must ask the Lord for a revelation. What God have ordained for your glory is revelation. "What eyes have not seen, what ears have not heard, God has prepared for those who love Him." He said, "These things, what does God do with them? God reveal them to us by His Spirit." So what have been prepared for you are things to be revealed to you. What God prepared for your glory are things to be revealed. You cannot live a glorious life without revelation. That is the reality. So you discover that when Paul heard that they became born again, you see where the matter lies. Where does the matter lie? To pray and ask that they will be filled with the knowledge of His will. In what? In all wisdom and spiritual understanding. That is what he meant in chapter three, when he said the new man that is renewed according to the knowledge. You cannot walk the new life without knowledge. You will just be trying and trying and trying. And that is why I tell people, when you are talking about real prayer, what were we taught in the place of prayer? He says, "This is the confidence we have towards Him, that whatsoever we ask according to His will, what does He do?" There is a will of God. God wants you to be renewed in the knowledge of His will. So you need to enter the place of prayer and insist that in my own life, this must be answered. The new life is not a trying thing. The new life is a revelation thing. It's a revelation thing. It's something about revelation. It's something about inspiration. Job 32:8: "There is a spirit in man. What gives him understanding? The inspiration of the Almighty." So what you need—because you must remember what made us a living soul from the very beginning was the breath of God. What will keep making you a living soul is the breath of God. It's this same breath. It's the breath, the breath, the breath. The more He breathes on you, what happens to you? You will not be a living thing, you will be a living soul, the breath of God, the breath of God. What we mean by that breath is inspiration. If you check that breath, that word inspiration in other translations, let's check it in Job 32:8. I'm trying to connect inspiration and breath. [Speaker 3] "But I see now that there is only breath in man, and that is the inspiration of the Almighty that gives understanding." [Speaker 2] Thank you. What I'm trying to connect for you is the connection between breath and inspiration. That the new life is a life of breath of God, inspiration from God. And so the point I'm making is that when you look at that Colossians that we are reading, Colossians 1, it says, "I pray that you will be filled with the knowledge of His will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding." Now, what happens to a man who is filled with the knowledge of His will? What do you see what follows in verse 10? "That you may walk worthy of the Lord." Are you seeing it? Are you seeing the connection between knowledge, understanding, and then walking the way you ought to walk? So when we come back to that chapter three that we are looking at, "Therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, put on tender mercies, kindness, humility, meekness, long-suffering." Don't think that will power can put it on. He has shown you how to put it on. The new man, he said, "Put on the new man who is renewed in knowledge." Am I very clear in what I'm putting together? So brethren, it is possible to be a representative of Jesus, but it is not something possible by human will. It is not possible by human power. It is not possible by human determination. It is possible by a revelation. You are always as you begin to be filled with the knowledge of His will, a revelation of His will, as you are filled with the knowledge of His will, what will begin to happen in your life is that what will be coming out will now be what? Tender mercies, kindness, humility, meekness, and long-suffering. The less you are filled with the knowledge of His will, you will discover that it will be difficult. Because the new man, what makes the new man the new man is knowledge. That is why the Bible says, "Let us be transformed by the renewing," you are renewing the mind, you are becoming a new person. What is renewing the mind is revelation of His will. Now, look at the connection. Go to Romans chapter 12. "I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your body a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service. And do not be conformed to the world, but be transformed by renewing of your mind." What do you want to prove by renewing your mind? What do you want to prove? That you may prove what is good, acceptable, and perfect. So do you see that it is the knowledge of God's will that is the renewal of the mind? So that it is as you are filled with the knowledge of His will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding, what happens to your mind? Your mind gets renewed. That is actually the putting on of the new man. But that knowledge of His will, this putting on is not just intellectual knowledge, but it is a transformational knowledge. It's an experiential knowledge. What makes it experiential, what makes it transformational, is that the knowledge does not come by intellectual engagement. It comes by the breath of the Almighty. I hope you get the difference. It's not an intellectual engagement. It is the breath of God that is giving understanding. That is why the knowledge is transformational. Intellectual knowledge does not transform anybody. It will only make you to be informed, but you will not be transformed. You'll be an informed person. That's why you see many brilliant theological scholars, but they don't know God. Because there's a difference between intellectual engagement and inspiration from God. That's what Jesus meant when He said, "Flesh and blood profit nothing," intellectual engagement. "It is the Spirit that gives life. The words that I speak to you, they are spirit and they are life." That is the transformational knowledge. So he's saying that put on the new man. How do we put on the new man? And I remember a very fundamental answer was given last week: "Put on the whole armor of God." And in addition to that, in putting on that armor, you need to understand the place of engaging your mind in the cry for inspiration. The cry for inspiration. How do we get it? And I want to further answer that by saying this. Look at somewhere the Lord showed me many, many years ago as a young Christian, something that brought a radical turnaround in my own life. Proverbs chapter two: "My son, if you receive my word, and treasure my commands within you, so that you incline your ear to wisdom, and apply your heart to understanding; yes, if you cry for discernment, and lift up your voice for understanding." What does it mean to cry for something? To request, to pray. If you cry, I'm talking about the reason why many people are not filled with the knowledge of God's will and put on the new man is that they don't understand the process of receiving God's word. There's a process of inclining, there's a process of crying. There's a place of crying. That is why Paul said, "Since the day we heard of your faith, we did not cease to pray." What was he doing? He was crying for them. He was crying for it. If you cry for discernment and lift up your voice for understanding, what are you shouting about? Something you desperately want. Something you are particular about. Because let me tell you, if you don't receive His word, till you will die, you will be trying to live a new man life, you will never be able to live. Revelation is the key. You must receive something to live the life of God. No one can by will power live the life of God. There must be a receiving. There must be impartation. Something must be imparted upon you. And what will be imparted? Discernment. If you cry out for understanding. If you seek her as silver. What does that mean? The way you look for money. He's trying to make you see why many people cannot live the Christian life. Not because they don't want to, but they don't understand the process. There's a process of entry. It is not that I am trying to live right. No, there's abundance. Jesus said, "It is finished." All you need to do is to take from the abundance of God. And let me tell you, what can be more abundant? God said, "I chose you to live the life of a man renewed after my knowledge." That is why I chose you. Please, will God not be willing to release it? He will release it. But there is a process for releasing. That's what we are saying. That's why Jeremiah said that "You will seek Me, you will find Me, when you search for Me with all your heart." There is a process. God will release it. But there's a process for releasing. And that is why if you put it the other way again, you see that it is the way of God. He said, "Have we seen a lazy man? A little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of hands, your poverty will come. Only for seeing a man diligent at his work, he will not stand before mere men, he will stand before kings." It is the same thing with your spiritual life. The way of God is the way of diligence, is the way of following after, is the way of being intentional. You must be intentional. You must be deliberate about what you are looking for in God. If you are not intentional and deliberate, if you are casual and trivial about everything, you will remain a casualty till you will die. You must be intentional. You want to get something. And that's what we are seeing here. He says, "If you seek her as silver." And brethren, you notice what follows? It did not stop there. "And search for her as hidden treasures." What is hidden treasure? Something that is precious. You seek her like hidden treasure. You're talking about, if you watch some of these films that show people looking for something, they say something is somewhere, they will now see them, they will go, they will pass through water, pass through sea, treasure hunt. You will see them, they will do all kinds of things because they want to get it. Some of them will die in the process. He says if you seek her, what are you seeking for? You are seeking for discernment. You are seeking for understanding. And you are to seek her like silver. You are to seek her like hidden treasure. What you are seeking for is discernment. What you are seeking for is a renewed mind. The process! How do we know God? What I tell to all of them now is that, as from next month, we will start a Bible study for 45-45 minutes once a month. I want to tell you how to know God. It is this matter of how. And that is why you notice that there's connection between 10 and 12, 13, 14. Verse 10: "For the Lord gives wisdom." Please, knowledge, understanding, where does it come from? From His mouth comes knowledge and understanding. Brethren, people of God, get this truth. Until God open His mouth, you can never be wise. If God don't open His mouth to you, you can never be wise. It is not intellectual reasoning. I keep saying this thing. It is not academic intelligence. We are talking about things that has to do with transformational knowledge. We are talking about impartation. It is from His mouth. When God speaks from His mouth, comes knowledge and understanding. But do you see that before God begin to open His mouth, before God begin to impart, there is a cry. That is what the fathers understood. Go and look at that same thing in Ephesians. Paul did that for you to know that it is not coincidence. By two or three witnesses, every word is established. You will find the same thing in Peter, the same thing in Ephesians. Ephesians chapter one, verse 16: "I also, after I heard of your faith in the Lord Jesus Christ and your love for all the saints, do not cease to give thanks, making mention of you in my prayers." What was he doing again here? Crying for them. Crying for them. That what? That the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give you the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of Him. So you can be born again, but you may not be transforming. There is a spirit of wisdom. There is a spirit of understanding. He's talking about transformation. But brethren, just get the matter right. The truth is that the day you gave your life to Jesus, what happened to the old man? The old man died. What happened to the new man? You put on the new man. What you only need now is the knowledge of that new man. What you had before is the mind of the old man. Your mind was not born again. So you now have to bring in the knowledge of the new man. So you have a lot of people, the old man have died, they have put on the new man, but they cannot live the life of the new man. Why? Because the knowledge is of the old man. So the Bible says, "Let us be transformed by renewing," you are renewing the mind, you are becoming a new person. What is renewing the mind is revelation of His will. Now, look at the connection. Back to where we are. "Therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, put on tender mercies, kindness, humility, meekness, long-suffering." Don't think that human power can put it on. He has shown you how to put it on. The new man is actually according to knowledge. Am I making sense to you? That's what he's trying to bring out. "Forbearing one another, forgiving one another. If anyone has a complaint against another, even as Christ forgave you, you must also forgive." What makes that possible is a continuous receiving from God and your mind being continually transformed. This is what is not happening to brethren inside our churches. That is why you see fights today, fight tomorrow, malice, backbiting, this, that, all kinds of things inside the house of God. Many of them may not be people who are not born again. Don't think they are not born again, they are not Christians. They will be born again. God is desiring that His child should grow. That the child has not gotten it right does not mean that child is not the child of God. There are those who are not children of God. But some people are actually children of God, they just don't have understanding. And so they are still doing all kinds of thing. And the desire of God is how somebody can father them, how there can arise a teacher, somebody that he gave to the church: teachers, pastors, apostles, for the perfecting of the faith. If the saint were perfect, those gifts would not be given. He gave people as teachers, He gave people as apostles, He gave people as pastors so that there can be instruction, there can be revelation. But however, get this something very clear. Even though the teacher teaches, the apostles work, the pastors work, we must get something clear. It is only God that can give increase. Paul plants, Apollos waters, but God gives increase. But Paul must plant. Apollos must water. God now give increase. But what we find today, we have now brought fellowship to a place of social gathering. We just come, we dance, we do this, we go. We are not engaging the apostolic dimension, the teaching dimension, the evangelical dimension. If we are not engaging all these dimensions in our fellowship, we will not grow. And that is the state of our churches today. That is the situation of most of our fellowships today. I remember sometime in one group that I belonged to, "You know we need everybody to also teach now, it's so that everybody can feel good." Everybody is not a teacher. Everybody has their gift and calling. It's like saying that so that the nose can feel good, it should be allowed to eat. Does it make sense? So that the nose can feel good, it should be allowed to chew food. What concerns the nose and chewing food? So that the eyes can feel good, it should be allowed to be the one to carry the body. We reduce spiritual things to commonsensicality, and that's why we have a lot of problem. Everybody has their areas of gifting. Let them work in their area, and you will see church grow. Why not feel good and allow the nose to be handling pepper like hand so that the nose can feel good? And then see how it is. So it's not about feeling. God understood the way we are. And that is why when He was to begin this thing, He said we should be renewed in the knowledge. Because without that knowledge, all of the list he's mentioning now, because I will be reading that now, "Above all these put on love, which is the bond of perfection." All of those things you will never see them in your fellowship until you go back to that verse 10. It is that verse 10 that opens the door. He had said, "Since you have renewed you are already renewed, so do this." People always focus on the doing, but they find themselves not doing it because they didn't look at how they were told to do it. "I will try to be humble." You cannot try to be humble. No matter how you try, you are don't try to be humble. When life enters your life, you will be humble. It is done by since you have renewed you've been renewed in knowledge. Am I making sense to you? That's what makes it transformational. Intellectual knowledge does not transform anybody. So whatever you focus your mind upon, whatever you spend your time with more, whatever you stay with more, that's what you will be transformed into. If you spend most of your time looking at how they kill somebody, how they cut people's head, how they do this, how they kill them, how they do that, go and check. That thing will also occupy your heart. That is what will control your thoughts. If you stay too much with soap, it will become soap. The point is this, if all your thinking, all your life, is on Instagram and what you have been watching on Instagram is not what will build your faith, you will discover that your faith too will be dying. If what you focus on on newspaper is how they kill somebody, kidnap somebody, kill that one, if that is what you occupy your mind, all your mind with, that's what will be controlling your thought. Whatever you focus upon, the Bible says there is something that must be our focus. "Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly." That is the matter. Not the word of men, not your thought, not your thinking, not your feeling, not your knowledge, but the word of Christ. If that is not what is rich inside you, you cannot live the life of the new man. You will keep struggling. So you see that as Apostle Paul is trying to conclude that aspect—because he's going to conclude that aspect in verse 17. From verse 18, which we will be opening up next week Monday, it's going to the issue of husband and wife, issue of marriage. We will be looking at that. But in wrapping up all that he has been saying from verse one, he came back again in wrapping them up to look at the issue is this: "Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom." He came back to that matter again. And not only that, gather around your life teachers of these things, teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your heart to God. Look for men. "Walk with the wise, you'll become wise." What do you want to become in life? Look for people that have it, walk with them, you will have it. You see teaching, admonishing one another. He's telling us how to put it on. It is by knowledge. You must be taught. There must be knowledge. Transformational knowledge, impartational knowledge. Not intellectual knowledge. That is why he said teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs. You compare spiritual things with the spirituals. The foolish man cannot receive the things of God. They are foolishness to him. That's why I tell people, be careful the kind of men you spend your time with. Not everybody has a right to the table of your life. Be careful the kind of books you read. Be careful who you are listening to. Very, very important things about how far our journey goes in life. And in concluding all that about our Christian life before it now goes to the family life, he now came back again to the same thing: "Whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus." Whatever you do, back to there should be neither Jews nor Greek nor Scythian nor slave nor free, but Christ in all and through all. He's concluding what he has been raising before. He's just wrapping it up because he wants to go to another thing again, to marriage, to the life of the family, how it should be in the family. He came back in "whatever you do in words or deeds, do all in the name of the Lord," that is what anybody wants to see in you is not Gospel, is not Gospel, is not Wole, it's not this, it's not busy, it's not so; what we want to see, Your personal life that people should see Jesus. Praise the Lord. Let's begin to pray for today. Next week, we take it from the matter of husband and wife. Let's pray to the Lord. I don't know what you have learned this evening. I don't know how it came to you. Just talk to the Lord. Say one or two things to the Lord. Lord, we are grateful. Thank You for Your word. Thank You for Your Spirit. Thank You. Oh, abundant life, eternal life. I want to live abundant life, God help my soul. Our Father, we thank You for this evening again. We thank You, O Lord, for a time again in Your presence, reflecting on the book of Colossians, looking into Your word, fellowshipping with Your word, fellowshipping with one another, learning, O God, at Your feet. Lord our God, we pray, grant each and every one of us at our individual level, divine encounter in the name of Jesus Christ. I pray for everyone who have heard me this evening, you will experience what we are talking about. You will have an experience, a transformational experience. God will encounter you. Thank You, eternal Father. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen. Let's share the grace together.
