Churches and fellowships cannot be more spiritual than the individuals and families that constitute them. God greatly desires a godly home. These are words of restoration and instruction in righteousness from Family Tent Ministry. May you be blessed as you listen.
[Speaker 2]
Shall we pray? Ancient of days, we are grateful unto you. we appreciate you. O Lord, we are grateful. I told somebody, I said, "If I'm given opportunity again to come, I will come as a woman." I don't envy men, oh. I will come as a woman. It's a great privilege. We have a lot about us that God depends on. Father, we are here again that you will open our eyes to make us see how to make the best use of all that you have endowed us with. Lord, please do so in Jesus' name. Particularly as it relate to our home, as relate to doing the will of God in our homes. Because when you want to evaluate us, when you want to search us, when you want to reward us, you look for us from the concept of the home. You will look inside a home. That is where you begin from. Lord, we pray that you will help us, you will enable us. You will work in us and through us that even all that you have endowed our life with, you will see them very useful in your hands in the name of Jesus. We will not release ourselves to the devil. Father, we pray that any negative influence will not have any sway over our life in Jesus' name. Thank you, faithful God. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen.
Praise the Lord. I want to welcome everyone of us again in Jesus' name. Are you hearing me? Both sides. At that end too. [speaks in Yoruba]. It's many a time we hear in the spirit. Many a time, even when your children are not with you, you hear some things about them in your spirit where they are. [speaks in Yoruba] at any table connect. I know you have what it takes to hear me. And the Lord will enable us in Jesus' name.
This morning, I want to—afternoon now. We want to talk about—I won't need the table, thank you ma. [speaks in Yoruba]. Praise the Lord. Okay. The theme of this couples retreat is Successful Marriage: The Price and the Prizes. The price and prizes. It's on. It should still be on. The price and the prizes. We can also say the cause—this now will not work—the cause and the effect. Abbi? We could say the cause and the effect. We could say the sacrifices and the benefits. We could also say the cost and the implication. What we are trying to say is that for us to have successful marriage, what are the price that I'm to pay and what are the reward and the prizes I will get? Am I only paying prices without gain? Even the Bible talks about Jesus. Bible say for the joy that was set before him. Is that not? So our God is a good God. So for the joy that was set before him, what did he do? He endured the cross. He defies the shame. So God also have reward in store when we are ready to pay the price. When we are ready to pay the price, there are reward. Reward that will open, that will go beyond this time. There is no time in eternity. I also want you to know, are you aware that as you are, the day you are born, you know that you cannot die? You live forever. Are you aware? So the difference between our time—where time matters, where we count 24 hours—and eternity is just the transition through death. But we live forever. When you wake up on the other side, you continue to do what? Your spirit either live in eternal life with the Lord in heaven or eternal damnation. The reason why I'm raising this is that your reward is not only here. When you are doing God's will, when you want to pay the price, it's not only here. And also, I also want you to know that your reward is not only in heaven. Because everything about the sacrifices you are paying in time—I mean in time in relation to time, our calculation when we talk of timelessness in eternity—all the sacrifices you are paying is not only for heaven. You also begin from here. Praise the Lord.
So what are the price that the Lord expects of you as a woman? God is not saying anything new. We know he's the—marriage came from God. God is the manufacturer. Abbi? That is an institution of man that came from God. Marriage, family. God is the manufacturer. Manufacturer. When you first have contact with anything, new gadget that you have never used before and there is a manual, do you throw the manual away? Except you see another manual—I mean manual of somebody, maybe the person have digested it and say, "That one you [speaks in Yoruba], come let me tell you because I've read it." The reason why that person is giving you that knowledge is because he has consulted the manual. So for you to be able to use your gadget well that you have not interacted with at any time, you need the manual. God is the originator. He is the author. He is the manufacturer of marriage. Therefore, he has the manual. And the manual is clearly written. He didn't hide it from us. So we are not particular about the men. God has given us different responsibility. And he knows why.
Praise the Lord. Like I said, God has created us differently. We have different roles and responsibility. Because of me, he has not made me—who made you? Even the watchman over the other. Bible also talks about attend your own stuff. Take care of your own garden. Is that? Take care of your own garden. There was a story in the Bible, a parable of somebody that said, "My master kept something with me. And when I was busy here and there, something happened to that thing." Was he justified? He said, "Ah, what? I just go here and there." So what the Lord has given to us in our different responsibility, it is for us to face it and make sure I obey, I follow, and I'm successful. He has not put me in a position to begin to mark and begin to talk that which belongs to my husband. Praise the Lord.
So what is my price? Because of our time, I just want to narrow it down to one that is so comprehensive. And that one is so inclusive because in it, we find all that we need, all that we need. Let's open our Bible, 1 Peter 3. 1 Peter 3. It's a popular place. I know all of us know the place. Verse 1 to 6. "Likewise you wives, be submissive to your husbands." Mommy, are you reading? "Likewise you wives, be submissive to your husbands. So that some, so that some, who do not obey the word may, please, may be won without a word by the behavior of their wives when they see your reverent and chaste behavior. Let not your be the outward adorning—braiding of hair, decoration of gold, and wearing of fine clothing—but let it be the inner beauty of the heart, clothed with the imperishable word of the gentle and quiet spirit, which is in God's sight, is very precious. For so was the holy women who hoped in God adorned themselves and were submissive to their own husband, as Sarah obeyed Abraham, calling him Lord, and you are now her children if you do right and let not be terrified."
Praise the Lord. So can we see from that place now? That summarizes the roles of a woman. The price you are to pay. The price I'm to pay. It's like I'm—okay. "In the same way, wives, submit yourselves to your own husband." I don't want to read again. Why you are starting that sentence with "in the same way", "likewise"? Can I get other version of Bible? "Likewise". Any other one? "Likewise", "in the same way". Why you are starting a sentence with "in the same way", "likewise", it means you are referring to something. Is that? That is there's a flow somewhere. And it's saying "in the same way, in the same flow that I've been talking about." So let us see the flow. Chapter 2 from verse 18. 1 Peter 2 from verse 18. "Households slaves..." Can you see what they are talking about here? They were talking about relationship between—submission between master and slave. Okay. "Household slaves, submit with all fear to your masters. Not only to the good and gentle, but also to the cruel. For it brings favor if mindful of God's will, someone endures grief from suffering unjustly. For what credit is there if you sin and are punished and you endure it? But when you do what is good and suffer, if you endure it, this brings favor with God. For you were called to this, because Jesus Christ also suffered for you, leaving you an example so that you should follow in his steps. He did not commit sin, and no deceit was found in his mouth. When he was reviled, he did not revile in return. When he was suffering, he did not threaten, but entrusted himself to the Lord who judges justly. He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree, so that having died to sin we might live for righteousness. You have been healed by his wounds. For you were like sheep going astray, but you have now returned to the Shepherd and Guardian of your soul."
Likewise, Chapter 3 in the same way, wives, submit to your own husband so that even some, if some disobey Christian message, they may be won over. As we continue the passage, we'll talk more of that. So can you see where God is coming from? That instruction is coming from that we should copy the instruction that is given between servant and master. And what is the instruction? That they should do what? They should fear and their master. When we are talking about fear, I hope you know it's the reverential fear we have for God. Fear could also mean to respect, to respect your master. He said not only to the good and gentle. That is what he told the slaves. Not only to the good and gentle, but also to the cruel. To the cruel. So when God is telling us that in the same way, he's telling us our own submission is not only to the good husband. It's not only to the considerate one. It's not only to the one that pampers you, that values you. It's not only to the one that, "My husband will do something for you yesterday," that we are babies in camouflage—we always want attention—it's not only to the one that gives us attention. But even to the one that is cruel, inconsiderate, non-caring. The Lord says you should still do what? Submit. It's not your husband that said so. God will not expect your husband to be cruel. But in a situation that is cruel, inconsiderate—eh?—yes, where we have an unloving husband, unsupportive, non-supportive husband, husband that we are not even working together. The Lord still expects you to do what? To submit.
Praise the Lord. He went further in Chapter 2, verse 19, said, "For it brings favor if mindful of God's will." It's not that you cannot do otherwise. Oh. It's possible for you to do otherwise. If you choose to do otherwise, the people think that you are going against God. You are not mindful of God. You leave your Creator out of the matter. You choose your own path. Because he's the one that has called you, gave you the responsibility. And you know the implication of that. When we have children that we also give instruction to, do you praise your children to also neglect that and go their own way? Is that what we goes we need down in our homes? Many of us go to different prayer meeting to pray in order that our children will listen, children will obey. But you, you—eh? Do you enjoy it? When we have situations where our children are like vagabonds, walking completely different from the path of their parents? [speaks in Yoruba]. It's the same way when we say no, God said I should submit to this inconsiderate man, to this cruel thing. No, I will go my own way. Will God be happy? Are you opening door of opportunity for yourself? Are you preparing for after time to timelessness? Because you know it's a journey. It's a link. And what we do here determines the other. We just mentioned that crucial thing, is the manufacturer's manual. It may sound, it may sound not reasonable. But that is the joker. That is what the manufacturer said. That is what he says will give us our expectation. And we have no choice than to obey. The Bible says when you obey, in this one he told the slave, "You will find what? Favor." That is part, one of the prizes you get. One of your reward. Favor. Favor. Who doesn't want favor? Favor is both God and man. It's God that gives that. [speaks in Yoruba]. If favor is out of a man's life, the man is finished. If favor is out of anybody's life, the man, the person is gone, is through.
So Bible says it brings favor because you are mindful of God. That is the price. Be mindful of God. Respect for God. That is the reverence you have for God. The reverence you have for God goes beyond going to church supposedly or when they say, "Praise the Lord," I say, "Hallelujah," when they say, "In Jesus' name," I say, "Amen," or I say, "Jesus is Lord." No. The reverence, true reverence for God is obedience to the instruction that he has given. If your child—you give your child instruction—and he's still parading, "Oh Mommy, you so fine, Mommy rere we si n'yani," and never carry out that instruction, will you say the child is doing the right thing? No. The Lord will help us in Jesus' name. Said, "If someone endures grief from suffering unjustly." Is that in your Bible? Eh? Said, "If someone endures grief from suffering unjustly." If the Bible—you know, this is what the Bible says we should follow, the formula is given of the in the same way. So we have to look at the same way he was talking about. Suffering now, unjustly. That is so possible for a woman in the hand of her husband to suffer unjustly. Suffer. So God is not blind to our challenges if peradventure, I have a husband that I suffer unjustly. You know what it is to suffer unjustly. I've done all that I have to. I'm submissive. Ah, kin lo tun ku? Just as Job—she said—no more than Job had done. Who is a man that will say not Job out of justice? But that man, when it took God's time, God could not find a sin in it. Except that Job himself. So if you suffer unjustly, that is you have fulfilled that even heaven will look at you and say, "Satan, see my daughter, that is so-so-so-so-so. There is no one like him." In order that I expect a wife to be. Oh, number one. In spite of that, you are still suffering unjustly in the hand of your husband. The Bible says God knows about it. And what does he expect you to do? He said, "For it brings favor if mindful of God's will, someone endures grief from suffering unjustly." What does it bring to that person? Favor. Why will you suffer unjustly? Because of God. Because of the one you are trusting. So God knows it's possible. But did he say the person should walk out? Did he say we should walk out? He said because of God. What should you do? You keep on. Because of God.
Devil took, he took away everything that Job had. And he now came to the flesh. You know when he came to the flesh, for many of us as it is, "My husband is different from me." You would also think that when the Lord told Satan, "Go and destroy everything that Job has," and he destroyed the children and all the property. Was he able to touch the wife? Why? Because he's not part of the man, the man himself. He is Job himself. So for us to know that even if I have to suffer unjustly, God still expect me to do what? To submit.
Praise the Lord. He went further in Chapter 2, verse 20. Said, "For what credit is there if you sin and are punished and you endure it?" So no matter what, even if you do something that makes you to do—ah, olowo-pami! Are you justified? Two wrongs don't make a right. As long as you are oppressed, maybe because of what he's doing. He did not give me attention. Even when we get to bed, he will just mock me. I don't know the story of a couple. When the couple in the bed, when the husband wants to have, when they want to have more, he would tell the wife, "Go to the bedroom and wait for me." And when they get there, he will just—as if—ensure pain and come back down and all—at least—no consideration for woman. As fast as that. That is enough for any godly woman to say, "Eh, what rubbish!" So because of that, "I will never allow you to touch me again." There are ways, there are wisdom God has given us to handle situations like that. Not for us to say, "No."
Praise the Lord. So by the time we say no because my husband is doing the wrong thing, we are positioning ourselves here where we are going to attract the punishment, the judgment of God. Because you are both liable now. Are you getting me? You are both liable. But God wants us to see a situation, God can defend us. Oh, God defends his own. When you stand with God, oh, you will not be put to shame. You will see God. Eh? If you don't see God outstretch arm, it's because you are compromising, you are alternating God. You alternate God in the sense that you only stand by him where it's convenient, you stand by your will, yourself, what standard or what standard of convenience. And when that is done, you cannot enjoy what God has given to you. Because it lacks respect to him. God will not want anything to alternate. He cannot share his glory with any man. But when you stand with God in submission, there will be a great blessing.
Praise the Lord. He went further in Chapter 2, verse 21. Said, "For you were called to this, because Jesus Christ also suffered for you." He now reminds us of Jesus. He now talks about Jesus, how he suffered, how he did not commit sin, and no deceit was found in his mouth, and he was, you know, crucified, and by stripes, by that crucifixion, what happened? We were healed. Abbi? We were healed. By that thing again, we are all children of God. And that is another reward. The reward could be uncountable. Because you are leaving your matter in the hand of God. The Lord that is able to defend you. The Lord that's able to turn things around. I know of a woman. The husband is dead now. He's the father of my friend. The husband was a Vice Chancellor of a university. The dad, I mean, the couple I'm talking about. The husband was a Vice Chancellor. They married as unbeliever. I mean those that do not have personal, vibrant relationship with Jesus before they came into marriage. But along the line, the wife became born again. And the man began to pass. Oh God, it was a terrible abuse. Terrible humiliation, disgrace for this woman. In fact, there was situation where he would just look at the wife. When she was about going out for service, the man would close the door. Said, "I want to eat pounded yam." The mommy would put down the bag and go and pound. You know, and to do all that to her. At the end of the day, the life of the woman—the woman was just obeying God. She was just obeying God without the abuse and the misuse. One day, that life, and that is what 1 Peter Chapter 3 is talking about. That when we submit, submission, God's own type of submission. Submission that he gave us an example in Chapter 2, verse 18 to the end. When we submit, there is a power. Many a time we limit God with our understanding. We think situations are just the way we see. We forget the God that we are obeying, that we are following, is the God that can take—that can make the heavens and the earth, that can do and undo. At the end of the day, God arrested the man. And when God arrested the man, he surrendered his life. It was during the time of his surrender, surrendered to Jesus when the man had become born again, that I knew the daughter and I have opportunity to be members of the family. When the story was told, I looked at the mommy that, "What? You went through this?" Because the daddy is everything is okay. The man said throughout his life span, he still could not imagine if the woman could have gone, could have resisted what he was doing for her. That woman is a conqueror. That grandmommy is a mommy and daddy now. But you see, who was able to conquer that man? Only the woman. It was only God that did that. And simply because the woman did what? The woman chose to obey God.
So in our own case too, what is that thing? Is it that he's not taking care of you? Is it that—I know we have different kind of issues. We might ask everyone of us of our different thing we are trusting God. They are plenty. "Maybe God should have this again" as touching relationship with me and my spouse. No matter what the situation is, the joker is what the Lord has given us here. He said in the same way, slaves submit even to cruel, where Jesus even laid down his head and went for people that hated him. And at the end of the day, did Jesus lose anything? Till the end of the whole world will come to an end, people will still be added to the faith. They will still be accepting him. Even if I renounce him today, some people will say, "Lord Jesus, here I am." And what? Souls will be added to the kingdom. And not only that, that gives you and I access, gave us healing, deliverance from the shackles of darkness. So if you will submit, as as slave will submit as mentioned here in Chapter 2, if you submit to the will of God as Jesus did. You know Jesus had option. He had option. Jesus had option. He could have said, "No, no, no, no, no, I don't want to go." Even in heaven, when we read Revelation, "Who will go?" He said, "I will." The angels couldn't find anyone to go. He had option. He could have backed out. So many of us too have option. We have option not to follow the Lord. But I can assure you that it is an option for one. It's an option that will give us, you know, that that will take away from us all that we desire even beyond here. The Bible talks about our God that do exceedingly abundant, above, ah, and not exaggerate. But when something is exceeding, don't you know? Bible now say he will do exceedingly abundantly above. That is to the extent which one can say when we obey him. But when you do your own, you see that it's limiting.
So he said, "Now, in this same way, you and I, how many wives do we have? Raise up your hand." What is are you expected to do? "Submit yourselves to your own husband." So that even some, if some disobey the Christian message, they may be won over. Tell your sister, "Won over." After all, do you want your husband to be won over? Do you know you are the one that has been selected? Tell your sister, "Won over." Do you want your husband to be won over? Do you know you are the one that has been selected? Do you know you are the assistant? Won over to the Lord's side. Won over to your side when you are on the Lord's side. And when he's won over to the Lord's side, he's won over to your side too. And at the end of the day, what will happen? You will have beyond what you can imagine. So how are they to be won over in that area? Praise the Lord. The one that is not even obey the word. Won is what? Won over. If I don't do that, mo ti fun ra mi, mo ti fun ra mi ni mark. Abbi? That is what I want to reap and that is what I'm sowing. But if you want to reap, you have to sow. And when we are talking about the submission, God has shown us. You know it's easy to submit to a very wonderful husband. Oh my God, loving husband, the romantic one in addition. And everyone that touches his heart, oh my dream, my dream man. You know we have our dream man. Dream. If I ask you to put down your dream man, it's so easy to submit to that kind of person. But God is telling us that he doesn't have only that kind of person in his vineyard. Because you are also not a perfect person. And for you to cooperate with God in winning that person over, that is the reason why you are born. Oh, you're sent here. Then what? To submit. If you do that, you'll be a soul winner even the very hardest one will be won over. Don't ask me why, how. Even me, I don't know. God just say you should do what? Submit. But our life style. Is it our word? Said our conversation, our life style. Our life style. It is not by oh, "I will confirm and I will even teach them Bible now." No. Through our life style. Through our life style, they will be won over. They may be won over without a message, abbi? Without a message by the way their wives live. When they observe your reverent life. [speaks in Yoruba]. Day and oh, eh? They also observe reverent life. [speaks in Yoruba] at Calvary. God knows why he has chosen that. And that is the reason why he has brought you into that class. He wants them to observe your life. Let them see your behavior. Let them see your submission, your respect. Let them see it more than your mouth. You know we can speak. God has blessed us with that. Because we have children to train. Praise the Lord. But we are not to come and train our husband but through our life. Through our life.
Through the grace, because God knows what he has deposited into you. That was why God himself—devil had to go through Job's wife. Eh? He went through Job's wife to say what? "Curse God and die." Because he know that the one he has done all these things for will say, "Blessed be the name of the Lord." He did not complain. "Curse God." He knows he can go through himself, is an extension of the man. May we not be instrument in the hand of the devil to send our husbands to hell or to send them away from where God has placed them to be head over our life in Jesus' name. So through our reverent life style, he's talking about beauty, not of outward adorning. That place is not telling us that we should not beautify ourselves. But that is not the beauty. Do you know—there was a time I saw one woman that was battered by her husband. Ah, omo yen fine ganni. She was so fine. I was wondering, "Se, fine ohun ni husband yi da o?" This beauty can never ever retain anything. Who is she? Beautiful girl. You know the, one of the ways sexual means by which men are aroused is through their eyes. And that's the reason why we caution our ladies what to wear. Because we are killing these men. Men are our husbands oh. Both of them are wives. The naked person, the boko in the market to move up in the night. Do move and more in the night. To men, ah, po-ne-ke. Irrespective of anointing. Because the way God has done it is are through their sight. You are already working upon their vision. So his beauty, the eyes, and he could see beauty. [speaks in Yoruba] through the inward or para... but that physical beauty won't, when it comes to marriage, that cannot matter. So see what mommy added to in front of her. "When she was about going out for service, the man would close the door. Said, 'I want to eat pounded yam.'" When it comes to marriage, Bible have told us what again? Inner beauty in addition. It's the good much. It's long game. It's long abundance of life. If you want to keep winning your husband, inner beauty in addition. Many of us think, "Oh, because I'm old," you know, it's possible for you to look good. After all, as in our present state, mommy is seventy but you will say, "Ah, mommy, ise da omo yen se." So even with packaging, we can still be looking young no matter our age. But if the inner beauty is not there, eh? The man will be looking at mommy's back. All the packaging, bi o se n wo bayi, no matter the beauty through your behavior.
So that is the reason. It goes beyond the physical beauty. It also include what? The inner beauty. So some of the things that we also have to work upon over our life is to—let's begin in investment. Say "investment". We can invest. If you want to look good, we can invest. If you want to make money, invest. Investment on our inner beauty. And what are the things we are to do? He said, "Instead, it should consist of what is inside, the heart, with the imperishable quality of gentle—is that in your Bible?—gentle and quiet spirit, which is very valuable in God's sight." For in the past, the holy women who put their hope in God also beautified themselves in this way. Gentle and quiet spirit. In Matthew Chapter 5, Bible talks about "Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth." You want to walk, want an inheritance in this life, inheritance in the hand of your husband. It could also mean fire-for-fire, you don't even have to fight for your right. They will give it to you. You will see how possible. But that is the word of God. And then we come to pass. That as if before anyone build and forever be over your Lord. The word of God can never fail. When you have a gentle and quiet spirit, you will conquer nation no matter how hard, how terrible that man, you will bring the person down not by fight. You will carry no weapon but you will be inheriting the earth. Meekness. Ability to even when your right is being taken, you are quiet, you are gentle spirit. And you can't get that from the pages of this newspapers. You can't get that from the counselors. The counselors never talk of meekness and quietness. They talk of what? Arrogance, feminism, what's other one? Equity and so on. But the word is teaching us what will give us results. I mean results beyond your own expectation. Many a time, "Where is the God? The God I study." [speaks in Yoruba] and follow this principle. And you will see that without you raising even clamoring for it, the Lord will bring them at your foot. You will win them. Because that is the word of God. Through the ornament of a meek, gentle and quiet spirit.
But that is another beauty. So it's beyond the price of acquiring beautiful clothes. It's beyond the price of somebody's hair who was trying to also win the husband. [speaks in Yoruba] with the intention of, "Ah, baba yi ta lo wo sa?" Ma ninu [speaks in Yoruba]. [speaks in Yoruba] in the name of God. What will make a man that ordinarily [speaks in Yoruba] something about that is because that life have not surrendered to the Lord. It's because that life have not come to God and say, "God, I want your method." Enough of my own method. Enough of the method the world has given to me. I have invented my own manual. Now I can, I see to what extent it can help me. Now I want to submit to your manual. And when you surrender, then you see the outstretched hand of God. [speaks in Yoruba].
The Lord will arise on our behalf. The Lord will help us in Jesus' name. So crucial thing: submit, submission, submission, submit yourselves. I mean submission, submission in everything. You know, we'll not be able to take time because we have been given question, we'll take it into [unclear: dederera-ra ra]. If you have any question, please note it down. God have answer for all our questions. The Lord will help us. So the Lord is challenging us this afternoon. What method are you using? Whose manual are you using? Go back to the foundation. Go back to the Lord. Through submission to him. Submissiveness to your own husband even to the unloving, to the gentle, and to the harsh, to the cruel, and to the considerate. And also look beyond your physical beauty. Believe for you to do that, you will get it when you come to God and acquire what? The spirit of meek and quiet spirit. And you can't get that when at the time you'll be able to get it on the pages of any newspaper, you'll get it in God's presence. Be woman of God's presence. Have personal relationship. Who is working on you? The word or the gospel or your own self? Submit yourself to the word of God. In prayer, in fellowship, in meditation. Let God honor us through our behavior. [speaks in Yoruba]. [speaks in Yoruba], "Your husband will say no, what I'm seeing is glory." And nobody sees glory and go after trash. The Lord will help us in Jesus' name. Shall we pray?
Let us commit ourselves to the Lord and say, "Lord, help me. Here I am." This requirement, I have no strength of my own. But I know you that have sent me this morning, that have asked me to look—the Bible says the commandment of God are not burdensome. They are able to help us. Lord, please help me. Help your children, help your daughter. That is the reason why you have brought us to this mountain. Lord that we can be helped by you. Here we are, help us. Give us new strength and new vigor to go forth and do likewise in the name of Jesus. Thank you, faithful God. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen.
