So we are all welcome again to today's marriage forum, the second Saturday in the month of May. And today we will be concluding this series we started since February, "The Tongue". We started the matter of the tongue in February. We looked at a reflection on the Book of James in the month of February. In the month of March, we looked at the tongue, biblical examples of women and wives. In the month of April, we looked at the tongue, biblical examples of men and husbands. And today as we conclude this matter of the tongue, not as if we have exhausted everything about the matter of the tongue, but we need to come to a conclusion today. And what we intend to do today is to do what I call closing remarks, concluding remarks about the matter of the tongue.
And in doing the concluding remarks, we would be reminding ourselves of one or two things that we have learned so far about the tongue. Our brethren who are here physically may have one or two things to say. Brethren who are online, you may have one or two things to say. We look at some major points of lesson, then we look at some Bible texts, Bible references on what they said further about the matter of the tongue. And subsequently, we would be closing the curtain on the drawing the curtain on the matter of the tongue that we started since February.
So in doing the concluding remarks, first we want to ask from our brethren who are here what they might have learned here and there about the matter of the tongue, what they could have taken so far their high point of lesson. And brethren who are online, in case you want to post something to tell us, this is one thing that was a blessing to me. After that, I'm going to take what is some major high points of lessons from the matter of the tongue, and then we'll now look at a few things the Bible said further about the matter of the tongue. We take question and answer and then we close for today. So we want to welcome our brethren, both here physically, brethren who are online. What are some major high points of lesson for you about the matter of the tongue? What are the major high points of lesson? Do we have brethren saying one or two things from here? Brethren who are here, do you have major high points of lesson, one or two things that was a major lesson for you in the matter of the tongue? We are waiting. We are listening. We want to hear from you.
Yes, brethren, we want to hear from you. What are your high points of lesson? Are we saying anything? All right. Brethren who are here are not making reference to any high point of lesson that they could have learned from the matter of the tongue. Brethren who are online, are there things you want to make reference to? Let's have it on the page. High point of lesson from the matter of the tongue. High point of lesson, if there are, let's have it on the page if there are. Okay, we are waiting for brethren who are online if there's anything you want to put on the page. While we are doing that, I will be moving on to remind us of some major things that we said before I now go to some things that the Bible said further about the matter of the tongue.
The whole matter about the tongue began in the month of February and we reflected on the Book of James. And one thing that came out very clear for us from James 3. Let me quickly open that scripture. James 3, some major high points of lesson that came to us from that book, the Book of James, chapter three.
[Speaker 1 reads from James 3]
"My brethren, let not many of you become teachers, knowing that we shall receive a stricter judgment. For we all stumble in many things. If anyone does not stumble in word, he is a perfect man, able also to bridle the whole body. Indeed, we put bits in the horses' mouths that they may obey us, and we turn their whole body. Look also at ships, although they are so large and are driven by fierce winds, yet they are turned by a very small rudder wherever the pilot desires. Even so the tongue is a little member and boasts great things. See how great a forest a little fire kindles. And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity. The tongue is so set among our members that it defiles the whole body and sets on fire the course of nature, and it is set on fire of hell. For every kind of beast and bird, of reptile and creature of the sea is tamed and has been tamed by mankind, but no man can tame the tongue. It is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison. With it we bless our God and Father, and with it we curse men who have been made in the similitude of God. Out of the same mouth proceed blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not to be so."
And the major thing that I want to call your attention to is that remember all that you are is summed up in your tongue. Your tongue is the totality of who you are. Don't ever forget that. Your tongue is the totality of who you are. The way you speak, the manner with which you speak, the things you say, the way you say them, is the totality of your life. Your life is on your tongue. From the way you talk, from the things you say, from the manner with which you use your tongue, we know the totality of your life. We can know whether you are a broken believer or you are not broken. We can know whether you are a Christian or you are not a Christian. We can know the extent to which you walk with God from the things that come out of your mouth. The totality of your being is reflected. What we are saying is that please remember that the tongue is a reflection of who you are.
Number two, it is crucial and very, very important for you to know that the tongue is a little member but at the same time, the Bible says it gives direction to our existence. What it's trying to make you see is that the way you use your tongue determines the direction that your life will go. What you will reap in life, whether life or death, is in the tongue. What you will reap in your relationship, what you will reap in your career, what you will reap in your marriage, what you will reap in your ministry, what you are going to reap in life, the tongue sets the direction for them. The tongue sets a direction for our lives. It's also important to remind you that the tongue is actually something that no man can tame. No man can tame the tongue. It takes submission to God. It takes a deeper walk with God to be able to tame the tongue.
And then to the issue of wives, biblical examples of wives and husbands. What you must remember very well as a wife or as a lady who is yet to be married is remember the Bible makes it very clear in different points in scripture that when your tongue is not clouded with what I want to point further today, we didn't read that scripture then, but I just want to show you the summary of what the tongue of a woman should be. That is in Proverbs 31. Proverbs 31. Proverbs 31. The summary of what the tongue of a woman should be. Proverbs 31. In talking about the virtuous woman, the Bible gave us the picture of what the tongue of a woman should be. And when that is there, it gives the kind of coloration the woman needs in her home. When talking about the virtuous woman it said several things about her. The Bible now says in verse 26 that she opens her mouth with wisdom and on her tongue is the law of kindness. It is important for you to remember as a wife or as a lady that it is crucial for you to learn to open your mouth with wisdom and on your tongue for you to have the law of kindness. It is crucial for you as a woman for you to learn to open your mouth with wisdom and on your tongue to have the law of kindness. It's very, very crucial because the Bible makes it clear that when the tongue of a woman is such that the tongue is corrupt, the tongue is perverse, the woman is working against her marriage. It says it is better for a man to rather go and live in the wilderness than to live with a clamorous, a contentious, a lousy woman in the house. And I'm telling you many men have stopped coming to the house because their wife is lousy. That's how some men pick some other women outside. That's why some men will stay in restaurants or they will stay in office until very late in the night because they want to just enter the house, sleep, and then the following morning they're going out because the woman is lousy. The woman is fault-finding. The woman is clamorous. The woman is contentious. It is better for you as a woman to note this.
Then in summing up that of the men, we noticed that one thing about the man, as a man you must learn how not to use your tongue in anger. One thing the Bible talks about over and over and over again about the male is that the male must learn how to be sure that in the use of the tongue, anger is not inherent. You don't open your mouth out of anger. The Bible in different references brought out the issue of the anger of the man and the tongue of the man. As a male, a husband or a yet-to-be husband, please remember that it is crucial for you to learn to use your tongue not in anger because the Bible makes us to see how the use of the tongue in anger by different men at different times, how it led to serious negative implications both for the men and for their families. We mentioned the case of Noah, the case of Reuben, how men spoke in anger and it became a part and parcel of that generation. So we encourage men wherever you are, it is important for you to know that anger is not the direction. Anger must not be coupled with the use of the tongue for men.
And then today we want to come to concluding remarks. In coming to concluding remarks, we're just speaking to ourselves as Christians. I want us to look at some few verses of the scripture. We want to look at them together so that we can learn a few things out of it. The first one I want to make reference to is when the Bible talked about the tongue as a weapon. The Bible says no weapon that is fashioned against you shall prosper, and every tongue that rises against you in judgment shall be condemned. Now, what is the concluding comment we are trying to bring out? The concluding remarks as we try to conclude about the tongue today. I want to beg you young men, young women, husband and wife. Be careful. Be careful. The tongue is a weapon. By a weapon, we mean the tongue is actually an armory. And you know with a weapon you can do anything with a weapon. If somebody is carrying a gun, you can do a lot of things with your gun. What can you do with your gun? You can kill an enemy. Am I correct? You can also kill a friend. Am I correct? You can kill family members. You can even kill yourself with your gun. Remember the police corporal now who having killed the wife, cocked the gun and also blew off his own head? He killed himself. What I'm trying to make you see as we are concluding this matter of the tongue is that number one, I want to beg you, the tongue is a weapon. Be careful how you use this weapon. The tongue is a weapon. Always remember that the tongue is a weapon. How you fashion this weapon goes a long way. How you fashion that weapon goes a very, very long way. But you must realize number one, that the tongue is a weapon. And because it is a weapon, it is good to be on your guard. It is good to be careful. It is good to be watchful. It is good to be sober in the use of this weapon, or else before you know it, the purpose of that weapon will not serve its actual purpose for which God gave it. You will be using it either to destroy yourself, your home, your spouse, your marriage, or whatever. The tongue is a weapon.
Now, number two that I want to call your attention to as we're taking ourselves through these concluding remarks is the other one is in the Book of Proverbs. In the Book of Proverbs, the Bible calls our attention to something very crucial about the Lord. It is good that you also note this thing about the Lord so that you can pay attention to it for your own life. In Proverbs chapter eight. Proverbs chapter eight. I want to read something to you about what the Bible says about the Lord. Proverbs 8, I read from verse 5. It says, "O you simple ones, understand prudence, and you fools, be of an understanding heart." May we have understanding heart in the name of Jesus. "Listen, for I will speak of excellent things, and the opening of my lips will come right things. For my mouth will speak truth; wickedness is an abomination to my lips." What I'm trying to call your attention to about the tongue, brothers and sisters, husband and wife listening to me, one thing you must learn about the tongue is to conform your tongue to be like that of the Lord. Anytime you open your mouth, may it be that the only thing you speak is truth. Wickedness must be an abomination to your lip. It says, "for my mouth will speak truth; wickedness is an abomination to my lips." Look at verse 8. "All the words of my mouth are righteous; nothing crooked or perverse is in them." I want to call your attention to this also. One thing that you must avoid very seriously on your tongue is that which is not the truth, that which is corrupt, that which is not the candid reflection of things. You must learn like God that perversity, crookedness, telling lies, not being truthful, it is something you must be deliberate and intentional about. It must not be on your tongue. It is very, very important. It says, "all the words of my mouth are righteous; nothing crooked or perverse is in them." NIV said, "my advice is wholesome and good. There is nothing crooked or twisted in them."
I want to go on again to look at another thing that is very, very important for the matter of our tongue. I'm picking the third one and the third one I'm taking you to the Book of Psalms. Look at what the Book of Psalm says which is very, very important for you as an individual. It is very close to what we read in the Book of Proverbs. Psalm chapter five, verse nine. It says, "for there is no faithfulness in their mouth; their inward part is very wicked; their throat is an open sepulcher; they flatter with their tongue." They flatter. Psalm 5:9. "For there is no faithfulness in their mouth; their inward part is very wicked; their throat is an open sepulcher. they flatter with their tongue. They flatter with their tongue." It's talking about a tongue where you cannot find faithfulness. A tongue where you cannot find faithfulness. Let me tell you one thing. No matter who you think you are, if your tongue is not a faithful tongue, you are a wicked person. In any relationship that you are in and your tongue is not faithful, please know that you are a wicked person. People whose tongues are not faithful are wicked people. Mark my words. It's not about "I love you", "you know you are this", "you know about all of those things". In any relationship, you and your father, you and your sister, you and your brother, you and your wife, you and your fellow brethren, you and your leader, you and your follower, once there is no faithfulness on your tongue, I want you to know that you are a wicked person. In that relationship you are a wicked person. That person should be afraid of relating with you. That person, God will deliver that person from your hand. You are somebody that God should deliver people from. That's what it means. That's what it means. You are somebody that God should deliver people from. And that is one thing you must understand. It means when the tongue of people are not faithful, what God normally does is to deliver people from them. And what that means for your life is that people that are precious to God, God will not bring them in your part of destiny. Are you understanding me? God will not bring people of treasure around your way. God will gather around your life people that are like you. And you know what it means at critical junctions of your life. You are dealing with somebody that person is not faithful to you. The person is not true at your critical junction. You know what it means. I want to beg you listening to me wherever you are listening to me, you must be careful. You must be careful. You will reap what you sow. Be careful to have a faithful tongue. We're talking about closing remark, concluding remarks on the matter of the tongue. It's not really a time to teach but just admonitions upon admonitions.
Another way you will know somebody that is wicked, somebody who is wicked, you will find that in Psalm 10. Let's go to the Book of Psalm, chapter ten. I want us to read something there. I want to read from verse 4, so you can get its actually where I want us to pick is the verse 7, but I want to begin from verse 4. It says, "the wicked in his proud countenance does not seek God. God is in none of his thoughts. His ways are always prospering. Your judgment are far above out of his sight. As for all his enemies, he sneers at them. He has said in his heart I shall not be moved, I shall never be in adversity." Look at what it says about the wicked. It says, "his mouth is full of cursing and deceit and oppression; under his tongue is trouble and iniquity." His mouth is full of cursing. What I want to take from here in this place is the two points from here. It says you know a wicked person because their mouth is full of cursing. I want to let you know something as a believer. No matter the level of provocation, no matter what you may be going through, I want you to know that it is so crucial and very, very important that cursing must not be found in your mouth. To curse. to curse. You may be saying is this thing so serious? Look at 1 Corinthians. Let's look at 1 Corinthians now. Old New Testament. Let's see something in 1 Corinthians, chapter six. I want to show you something there, something for us that we should learn from. I want to read from verse. Let me take my reading from verse. I want to move some things out. Okay. Now, let me read from. sorry, chapter 5. It is chapter 5. I want to read from verse 9, chapter 5 from verse 9. "I wrote to you in my epistle not to keep company with sexually immoral people. Yet, I certainly did not mean the with the sexually immoral people of this world or with the covetous or extortioners or idolaters, since then you will need to go out of the world. But now I have written to you not to keep company with anyone named a brother." Please look at all the words that are used here. If anybody is named a brother, number one if he's immoral, don't keep company with him. If there is a brother or a sister who is immoral, don't keep company with such people. Number two who is covetous, you don't keep company. Number four, see on that number two, or an idolater. Look at the next thing. Or a what? A reviler. NLT says who is abusive. The Bible says in NLT that that word there, because it's giving us different translation to that to that word, in NLT it says the word reviler is somebody who is abusive. An abusive person. Somebody who is abusive is somebody that you must be careful, you must be watchful, no to keep company with. When you notice a Christian who is abusive, who says he's a Christian but he's abusive, then you have to be careful. You don't keep company with such people. You don't keep company with such people. It is very, very important. It mentioned or a drunkard or a swindler, don't even eat with such people. What I'm trying to make you see is the seriousness about people who are insulting. People who are insulting with their tongue. You can see how serious the matter is that the Bible says we should not keep company with anybody who call himself a brother. We should not even eat with such a person. When you notice an individual is abusive and he calls himself a brother or a sister, then you have to be careful with such people. It is very, very, very crucial that we stay clear, we steer clear such people so that we don't find ourselves in situations that we don't expect ourselves to be. Praise the Lord.
Now, I want to show you something similar to what we just said now. Look at a similar thing to that in Psalm 52:1-2. Psalm 52:1-2. And I want you to compare this scripture with what the Lord said in Luke chapter 10. When the Lord was telling the disciples what did he say? "I'm sending you out as what? Sheep among what? Wolves." He says, "the devil goes about like a what? Roaring lion, seeking who to devour." Look at Psalm 52:1-2. It says, "why do you boast in evil, O mighty man? The goodness of God endures forever. Your tongue devises destruction like a sharp razor, working deceitfully." I take that in another translation. It says, "all day long you plot destruction. Your tongue cuts like a sharp razor. You are an expert at telling lies." What I want to bring out from this place is people who speak and their tongue is like a razor that tears people. The Bible also describe such people as proud and wicked people. If you notice that you speak to cut people, your word cut people, cut them, cut them. Please know that against the truth you're an arrogant person. You're an arrogant person and you're a wicked person. People who are meek and humble don't cut people with their tongue. It is an evidence of arrogance. It's an evidence of arrogance and wickedness when you see a man, when you see an individual, whose tongue normally cuts people. It says your tongue is like a sharp razor blade. You can tear people into pieces, tear them, tear them, tear them with the things you say. Be careful about sharpening your tongue. We are saying this particularly for relationship and for marriage, but I'm telling you it affects you everywhere. You have people like that even in their offices that everybody avoid because they know that this person's tongue is not good. There are people like that in the fellowship that everybody keep at a distance. So why we are speaking particularly about relationship, it is something that affects every sphere of our life. It is very, very important that as believer we are careful, we are careful to be sure that our tongue is not the tongue of the wicked.
So what is it that we have brought out is the characteristics of the tongue of the wicked. Those things I said, they are the characteristics of the tongue of the wicked. All those things that we have been mentioning, they are the characteristics of the tongue. If you want to know what characterize the tongue of wicked people, the tongue of men who don't know the Lord, the tongue of men who don't regard God, those are the things that characterize them. So in a closing remark is that be careful not to have the characteristic, the things that characterize the tongue of the wicked. Let us be careful not to have these things. Certain things characterize the tongue of the wicked and we should be careful not to have those characteristics. All those things we have mentioned one after the other are what are the things that characterizing that characterize the tongue of people who don't have regard for God. When we see a wicked man, don't be thinking of somebody that carries that have two horn in his head and then carry [unclear: gbegu-gbegu] in his hand. Don't think of somebody that carry cutlass going everywhere "I will kill anybody". No. When we talk about the wicked we are talking of people who don't have regard for God in the use of their tongue. That's what we mean. Things that characterize people who don't have regard for God. People who have regard for God, these things don't characterize their tongue.
So what is it that should be the direction of our tongue as we close up this matter today? The way our tongue should be while there are so many references in the Old Testament, I will prefer to just sum it up by a single scripture in the New Testament which is Ephesians. Ephesians chapter 4. Ephesians chapter 4. How should our tongue be? Ephesians chapter 4:29. "Let no corrupt word proceed out of your mouth, but what is good for necessary edification, that it may impart grace to the hearers." What is it that I'm trying to to call your attention to as we are reading this this scripture? What is it that I'm calling your attention to? Is that it is very, very important for us to know that why the wicked prepare their tongue, as I said they sharpen it, they prepare it, they do this, they do that, why are they like that? It is coming from they don't have regard for God. Please don't forget that I said the tongue is a reflection of your being. The same way you see people whose primary concern is the kingdom. They also sharpen and prepare their tongue so that the purpose they want to achieve with that tongue is to minister grace to the hearer. No matter what could be happening, no matter what is going on. I had people who said somebody was talking to me said when it comes to issue of money, it's difficult for me and my husband to talk peacefully. I said, look my sister and I said my brother, if you cannot talk in a way that you cannot also edify yourself even in financial matters then it means you are seeking first money above God. I said you have set a priority over money that is above God. If you cannot. I said the Bible says let no corrupt word proceed out of your mouth. That is, in every there are different situations: provoking situation, bad situation, good situation, tense situation, peaceful situation. You know there are different situations that you can come into. The Bible is saying that in every situation, how will you know men who have regard for God? When we say regard for God now, men whose primary concern is how to please God. They begin to fashion their tongue because normally we prepare the tongue before we speak. That's what you need to know. It's just the preparation of that tongue is a summary of how the heart is fashioned. That's why the tongue is a reflection of our being. So in a closing remark is that the Bible want us to be people that know, no corrupt word proceed out of their mouth, but what is good for necessary edification.
So this is it now. Let me take a simpler translation. Don't use foul or abusive languages. Let everything you say be good and helpful. So let's look at it. Situation of provocation. What do you want to say? What is good and helpful? Situation of no provocation. What do you want to say? What is good and helpful? Situation where you are annoyed. What is good and helpful? Situation where you are not annoyed. What is good and helpful? Situation of tense situation. What is good and helpful? Financial situation. What is good and helpful? Marriage, I don't know which matter. Anything. And that's what I tell people, when we talk about some issues people say ah, even in Christianity money matter matters. I said it is because in some matters you have regard for God and in some matters you don't have regard for God. And so it becomes very important. It says don't use foul or abusive language. Let everything you say be good and helpful so that your word will be an encouragement to those who hear. So in any situation of life, this is the position of our tongue. Look at how it came again in the Book of Colossians. Don't let us have things that characterize the tongue of the wicked. Let us fashion ourselves after the tongue of the upright. Colossians chapter 4:6. What did it say here? He says "let your speech always." That's the word I'm trying to call your attention to. "Let your speech always be with grace, seasoned with salt, that you may know how you ought to answer each one." You see, there are different situations. That's what it's trying to make you see. But if you don't prepare your tongue, what will characterize your tongue will be the tongue of those who have no regard for God, of the wicked. If you have not prepared your tongue, you are just there. And [unclear: your talk is like the talk of a dog]. If you have not prepared your tongue in that situation, you will not know how to answer that kind of a person. You may not talk, you may just do like this but you have said something that "your head is scattered, you are mad". You may not talk, you may just do like this, "fool". You see, you would not know how to answer. That's why it says let your speech always be with grace. It implies we prepare the tongue. The wicked people look, when you read that somebody is an expert in lies, is it not preparation? It takes a lot of intelligence to be able to lie. I don't know whether you have watched "Sun Sets at Noon" by Mount Zion and you see how that brother anyway it's a script but he must have taken time to look at because if you don't know, if you are not a very clever and intelligent person and you have prepared the speech very well, before you know it you have contradicted yourself. So people when they say they are expert in telling lies, it means it takes a very clever and intelligent person to have prepared the speech very well. The way the person will put this, put this, put this, put this together. It means it takes discernment of God to know that the person is telling a lie. The way the person will put it together. It says their heart is crafty. They are expert in telling lies. So it's telling you that it's the same way it takes a heart that is gracious for the lip to be gracious. It says let your speech always, my emphasis this morning for us as we take closing remark is the word always. If it is not always, you will answer some people well, you will answer some badly.
I told you the story of my friend, both live in Akure. I think I've mentioned the case to you before. He was the one telling us what happened to him. He was driving along the road. He just said that brethren, one way to know whether you are born again is to look at yourself behind the steering. Nigerian driving will test your being born again. He was just driving down around that First Bank roundabout as he was negotiating the roundabout when one woman just flared. He was so angry, he didn't know what to say. He just looked at the person and just did like this to the woman, you know the sign of "you must be crazy", and just drove off in anger because he did not just know what to say. But he has already said something. Then as he drove off the woman followed him. Everywhere was going the woman was following him. Until he parked, the woman too parked. When he noticed the woman followed him, he started getting anxious. What is going to happen? Oh, I've offended the gods that want to come and take revenge. And at the church the woman just came out of the car and just knelt down. "Pastor, don't be angry, my Pastor, don't be angry at all, my Pastor, my Daddy." She just knelt down before him. Ah, he said he just wished the earth just opened and swallowed him now. He said he was so ashamed. He felt how I wish I was able to compose myself and I'll have a better message to preach that morning. You know, what he was just trying to make us, he just said brethren, it takes God behind the steer. He was just being sincere. Some will not tell that kind of a story but he was just trying to make us see that James said the tongue can no man tame. It takes a lot of submitting to God, consciousness, deliberateness, to be able to make our tongue always to be filled with grace, to be seasoned with salt, so that every kind of situation we will know how best to answer. We will not answer as the wicked would have answered as representing the Lord.
Let me invite my wife to close the meeting. Please come and close the meeting for us this morning.
[Speaker 2]
Father, in Jesus' name, we are grateful unto you. Thanking Lord for speaking to us. Thanking Lord for how you began with us today. We pray Lord you will continue with us in our different closets. You will continue with us personally. You will help us to get more understanding. You will work it in us and through us so that we will live the life that is expected of us in the name of Jesus. That we will not, our life, our tongue will not operate in the characteristics of the wicked, of those who do not know you in the name of Jesus. Lord, we pray, oh Lord, we know you, we have been born of God. Therefore Lord, we put off every characteristics of the flesh and everything whatsoever that is not of you in the name of Jesus. And help us Lord, we submit ourselves to your training. Holy Spirit, enable us, train us, help us to know that our tongue is to be seasoned with salt, full of grace, being gracious in everything we say in Jesus' name. Lord, we thank you for speaking to us again. Daddy, we thank you for helping us again. Amen. Because when you send your word, you have sent to us help, healing, deliverance. You have sent to us solutions to all our problems. Lord, we receive it again this morning in the name of Jesus. Amen. Thank you, faithful God. Thank you, Lord. In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen.
Let us share the grace.
The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with us now and forevermore. Amen.
Surely, goodness and mercies shall follow us all the days of our lives, and we shall dwell in the house of the Lord forever and ever. Amen.
