The Wisdom of God (1)

We thank Him for His mercies. We thank Him for bringing us together again this evening for our usual Monday discipleship class. A time of intentional Bible study, looking through the word of God to learn His ways as we gather again today. Wherever you are, our brethren who are joining us on Telegram, our brethren who are joining us on Mixlr, we who are here, I want us to just appreciate God. Wherever you are, can you just thank God for life? Can you just give thanks to the Lord for granting life? Can you just appreciate Him? Can you just bless His holy name? Can you just say Lord, we are really, really grateful. It is of Your mercies that we are not consumed, because they are renewed morning after morning. But for You, Lord, we would have been consumed. We bless Your holy name, our Father. Almighty God, we are grateful. We thank You again for this opportunity to gather. We thank You again for this privilege of meeting together, to fellowship with the word and with the Spirit. Our Father, we pray this evening, that the scripture says we should acknowledge You in all our ways. When we do so, the scripture teaches that You would direct our path. Lord, we rest on this scripture this evening. And Lord, we say direct our path. Instruct us in the way we ought to go. Teach us Your ways. Thank You, eternal Father. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen. We thank God for this opportunity again to be here. And we concluded "Thy Kingdom Come" last week. And today we want to move on to another topic to look at together in scriptures. In concluding "Thy Kingdom Come" last week, we made it very, very clear that the reality of the kingdom of God is the will of God. And one very, very strong issue was that if you want to understand what it really means to be blessed, you can look at blessing from different perspectives. But when you say someone is indeed blessed, we saw last week that it transcends material prosperity. It transcends anointing. It transcends power. It transcends giftings, the gifts of God. The bottom line of when you say somebody is indeed blessed is that the person can hear God and the person obeys God. That is the greatest of all blessing. And incidentally, I was discussing with someone in the course of the week, last week to this week. And we were looking at a very, very important thing. That the greatest of all blessing, when you say God blesses a man, is when God decides to give Himself to that man, when God decides to reveal Himself to a man. Jesus Christ was saying something in Matthew 13, when He was speaking to His disciples. "Blessed are your eyes because they see these things. Blessed are your ears because they hear these things. That there were so many righteous people and prophets that wanted to hear what you are hearing, but they could not hear it. They wanted to see what you are seeing, but they could not see it." So last week we saw Jesus said rather, blessed is the person who hears the word of God and do it. So we said that let us have a clear understanding. Let what we seek in God transcend material prosperity. Let it transcend church activities. Let it transcend gifts. Let it transcend anointing and power. While all of these are very, very good, the real thing that is the core of God's blessing is that a man can hear the word of God and a man can do it. Praise the Lord. Today we want to move on to a new topic. We are considering, I don't know for how many weeks we'll be considering this also. Sometimes I just know that we are starting from somewhere. But how we travel, I must confess, I don't really determine them. I just discover that sometimes you want to zero in at a point, and you see the Spirit of Lord saying, "No, no, no, no, there's still emphasis on this one to take." And sometimes you feel, okay, you want to go further, He said, "No, I think this matter is properly concluded, move to this matter." So it is more like the wind bloweth, you don't know where it's coming from nor where it is going. So we are starting another topic today, which is the wisdom of God. And the first thing I want to quickly call our attention to in this matter, before I begin to take scriptures verse by verse, is 1 Corinthians 2:12-16. Now, in this place, the Bible says that "Now, we have received not the spirit of this world, but the spirit which is from God, that we might know or we might understand the things freely given to us by God." So God gave us certain things. But how can we know them? How can we know them? The Bible says that the things that are freely given. I want you to note that the things of God, they are freely given. Freely given. The point is, it is very important for everybody to know something. Because we have this sense of entitlement. We think that because we have done certain things, so we are entitled to certain things from God. So you begin to act and behave as if, why will God give you? Entitlement, mostly that describes it very well. But the Bible says that the things that God gave us, they were freely given. There is nothing any man receives from God on the basis of earning it. There is nothing. You need to get that. You need to know that it's not because you prayed. It's not because you did. It is very important for everybody to know that what we receive from God, they were freely given. Now, the Bible says that "We have not received the spirit of this world, but the spirit which is from God." So what is it telling us? What is it telling us? That there are two spirits. Is that not? Don't forget our topic, the wisdom of God. I want to first lay some foundation before we now begin to build on those foundations. Now, there are two spirits. One is the spirit of the world, the other one is the spirit that comes from God. Now, the reason why God gave the Spirit to us is for one purpose. What is the purpose? So that we can understand the things that are freely given. So it is clear therefore, that without the Spirit of God, nobody can understand the things of God. Nobody can by intellectual power, by human sagacity, human insightfulness, human ability, ability of intellectual critical reasoning or philosophical qualification or quantification. Nobody can by that things know the things of God. It's not possible. For anybody to know these things which are freely given, the person needs the Spirit of God. Now, something that is clear from this place is that there is a challenge. We are told that we should study the Bible. We should read the Bible. We should meditate on the Bible. We should memorize the Bible. Now, all of these things, with what are we doing them? Intellectual power. You need to be able to read and write before you can read the Bible. That's intellect. You need to be able to think before you can think the Bible. If you have mental problems, you can't think the Bible. Now, however, all of those elements, they are not the things we need to know the things that are freely given to us. Now, the reason why I'm calling attention to these things is we want to look at the wisdom of God. Now, while all of those elements, they are needed to engage God, they are useless in knowing God. Are you getting what I am saying? And I believe I'm not contradicting myself. All of these elements, your intellect, your understanding, your education, all of those things. For example, if you look at the epistles, Peter was a fisherman with low education. Paul was a lawyer. You can see the difference in the intellectual writing of the two of them. So nobody is saying that human intellect is a useless thing. No. So we need all of these things to engage God, but they are useless in knowing God. It is important to lay this foundation. The moment you begin to feel, "I can know God," then you can't find God. Once you begin to think that, yes, me, I will. Give me concordance, give me this, give me the Bible map, give me all of those things. When you begin to think that, yes, that is the what is it? You will discover that you will have all the Bible knowledge, but you will not know God. Because the things of God, they are freely given. They are not meant to be merited. They are not meant to be merited. They are freely given. They are things that are freely given. And because they are freely given, it is therefore important for us to know that whatever in our lives comes from God, God alone takes the glory. He alone. That glory cannot be shared. That glory cannot be divided. But that is the direction I'm going right now. I'm just try to lay a foundation. The wisdom of God. The wisdom of God is such that what God gave in Christ, God gave it freely. And when God gave it freely, God also gave the Spirit so that what He's given freely can be known. I've laid that foundation. I want to move on. We will soon bring all of these things together as we are journeying. The second thing is that, and verse 13, "And we impart this in words, not taught by human wisdom, but taught by the Spirit." So these things that God gave, they are things that are meant to be taught. They are meant to be taught. So you see the Spirit teaches so that you can teach it. Nobody is meant to be a stop of that thing. The Spirit teaches those things, and we impart these things in words that are taught by the Spirit. So in other words, the words that we use to impart the things of God, they are actually what we receive. They are not things we think up. We did not think them up. No. But you know, it will be that you are thinking. But the reality, the reality of the things of God, is that actually that thing we used to teach it was not because we were able to think. It was because we were taught those things. So it is, please know something. Know something. He said, "And we impart this words, we impart this words." Now, I want you to note what is so crucial here. What is crucial in what is being said here is that whatever we want to say to men, these things cannot have the impact of God's kingdom except we are using the words taught by the Spirit. If we are not using the words taught by the Spirit, there will be impact. But that impact will not be directly connected to God's kingdom. The one that is connected to the kingdom, we say you have impact on people. And that impact is not just an emotional impact. That impact is not just "Hallelujah, this is wonderful." No, it is not just going to be something trivial, something light, something that does not last, something that does not carry men, something that does not bring life, something that does not put men in eternal perspective or conforming them to the image of God. You see, if it must be what you do all of that, it must be that you receive it. If you don't receive it, you can have impact. But that impact can never be connected to Christ. That is why you will notice that several times Apostle Paul would say that we should pray for him that God should give him utterance. Have you heard how many times he would say that the Lord will give us the word, the Lord will give us utterance? The point is that anybody who is not taught by the Spirit of God cannot impart the things that are freely given by God. For you to be able to impart, you can do a lot of impartation as in, we do engineering, we do physics, we do, we even do CRK, I taught CRK for 15 years in secondary school, which is Christian Religious Knowledge. Now you see we do all kinds of impact. We can produce architect, we can produce different people, we can produce engineer. But we are talking about the impact that has to do with the things of God, with His kingdom. Those things, they are things that are actually powered by the Spirit. Once they are not powered by the Spirit, then our words cannot have that impact. Now look at it. Look at something now in that verse 13. That's actually where I'm going. He says, "And we impart this in words, not taught by human wisdom." He says, "We impart this, this." What is the "this"? That things that are freely given by God. I hope you are getting it. He said we impart these things which are freely given. These things that God gives, they are supposed to be imparted by words. They are supposed to be spoken. They are things that are to be taught. These things that we receive in Christ, they are not material things. I want you to note that. These things are not material things. They are not material. They are not things you wear. They are not things you eat. They are things that are imparted in words. Now, which means when the things of God want to come to a man, how does it come? How does it come? It comes in words. It comes in words. The things of God don't come to a man in form of money, in form of clothes, in form of food, in form of riches. When the things of God, when they want to visit you, how will they come? They will come in words. These things that are freely given. Now, God gives these things freely. And now, He says these things, we impart these things in words that were taught by the Spirit. So when the Spirit wants to come to a man, the Spirit comes speaking. He comes speaking. He comes speaking, saying, saying something, saying something, speaking something. Now, those things which the Spirit impart to us in those words are the things we too now also do what? We now impart to people. Now, but you know in all of this process, our intellect is involved. Our mind is involved. Our hand, our voice, our tongue, everything they are involved. But once you remove the Spirit from all those other involvement, the kingdom of God is not there. Once it becomes our mind, our intellect, our mouth, our thinking, our voice, but without the Spirit speaking, what you have is no more God. For it to be God, it must be that the Spirit is involved. The Spirit is the one who teaches. Now, the impact of this thing is that He says interpreting spiritual truth to those who are spiritual. Have you seen something? He says and we impart these words, 1 Corinthians 2:13 now, we impart these words, not taught by human wisdom, but taught by the Spirit. Now, interpreting spiritual truth to those who are spiritual. Now, what is that telling you? It's telling you that those things that are of the Spirit, which the Spirit speaks to us and we too are now speaking those things. When we speak those things, if those things will have the intended impact, those we are speaking to must be spiritual. In other words, I'm trying to make you understand something. As the Spirit works effectually in me to bring a word, He must work effectually in you to receive the word. That is why it becomes so crucial to know that when the Spirit brings a word, it is impossible for anybody to receive that word without being enabled again by the Spirit. That is why Paul will say, "Paul plant, Apollos waters, but it is God that gives increase." The reason is this, He said, "I will build my church. The gates of hell will not prevail." So when it comes to building, edification, making life to become indeed like Christ, there's only one builder. That builder is Christ. The real builder is Christ. And how is that done? It is done by the effectual working of His Spirit in the person who preaches and in the person receiving the preaching. When we correctly, when we understand this very, very well, when this becomes something we truly understand. If we truly understand this foundation, then you will come to realize why the Bible says God resists the proud and give grace to the humble. If you truly come to understand that the builder of all things is God Himself, that actually even though we do all the preaching, we do all the laboring, we do all of those things, but actually if that thing must establish God's kingdom, it must be when God alone is involved. Now, our focus, for brethren who are just joining us, we started a topic today which is the wisdom of God. We are trying to look at the wisdom of God. And we have said something about God's wisdom, that actually God's wisdom is something that comes in words. God speaks. God speaks. When God is speaking to a man, teaching a man something, not by intellectual power, not by human reasoning, not by the power of eyesight, no, not by the strength of human sagacity, but God is teaching. He's teaching. That thing that God is teaching is God's wisdom. That thing is wisdom. That thing is wisdom. The reason is, when you look at, let me quickly establish something further on that. Look at Proverbs, quickly look at Proverbs, we'll come back to this place quickly. Proverbs chapter 2. Are you there? Proverbs 2:6. Can we try different translations? He says, "For the Lord gives what? Wisdom." I'm reading English Standard Version. Let me read other translations here. We want to get that thing very, very clear. Proverbs 2:6. English Standard Version says, "For the Lord gives wisdom. From his mouth comes knowledge and understanding." New KJV says, "For the Lord gives wisdom. From his mouth comes knowledge and understanding." Very similar. NLT says, "For the Lord grants wisdom. From his mouth comes knowledge and understanding." NIV says, "For the Lord gives wisdom. From his mouth comes knowledge and understanding." The message says, "And here is why, God gives out wisdom free, is plain-spoken in knowledge and understanding." KJV, "For the Lord giveth wisdom. And out of his mouth cometh knowledge and understanding." Amplified, "For the Lord gives skillful and godly wisdom, and from his mouth comes knowledge and understanding." What do you discover? Where does wisdom come from? God gives wisdom. When He want to give it, how does He give it? From His mouth. So you can never be wise except God speaks to you. You can never, please mark my words. You can never be wise except God speaks to you. We're talking about the wisdom of God. So when we say a man is wise, so for example now, if a man is to be wise in handling his academic life, what can make him to be wise? When God speaks to him. So you notice therefore that there are two kinds of wisdom then. Because without God speaking to you, you can understand your academics. Can't you? Can't you? You can. You can understand your academic work. Without God speaking to anybody, you can become, you can have first class in any degree. Is that not true? Is that not true? So which means intellectual wisdom is not wisdom yet. You know what I'm going to say? Being knowledgeable does not mean being wise. Am I making sense? You can be very, very knowledgeable. Very knowledgeable. Does not mean that you are wise. If anybody is to become wise, God must speak. As long as God has not spoken, there is no wisdom. But does that mean that human beings are foolish without God? Now because this is very, very crucial for you to understand something very, very important. Because we'll, as we take this journey, we will soon journey and journey and journey. I don't know which of the episode, this is still episode one we are starting today. I hope this episode will carry us into the new year if God sparing our lives. We are going to journey into the origin of human wisdom and the modus operandi of human wisdom. Where does this come from? How does it operate? What is the origin? We need to check all of these things. We are just going to be looking at the Bible. Simple, simple words from the scripture. Just looking at Bible, comparing it. Rather, I said, "Look, always carry your Bible. Let's compare. Let's look at these things intently." Where does human wisdom come from? How did we become people who say that we are wise? Because the Bible says, look at that place that we read. So we have noticed something in Proverbs. He says for the Lord gives wisdom, from His mouth comes knowledge and understanding. But if you look at what follows in verse 7, look at what follows in verse 7. What does God do? What does God do? Verse 7. Read your own translation. What does God do? He stores up sound wisdom for who? So wisdom is not meant for the foolish. He stores up sound wisdom, so they store it. They don't just give it. They don't just speak to anybody. They don't just talk to anybody. But for that wisdom to come, he says they are stored for the upright. They are not released to those who are not upright. They don't release them. That's why I tell, when I tell people that the greatest blessedness a man can understand, can have, is the privilege of when Jesus said, somebody said, "Blessed is the pump that gave you suck, that is the breast that gave you suck, and the womb that bore you." Jesus Christ said, "No, you don't know what blessing is. Rather, blessed is the man who hear and do it." Because the person who gave birth and gave suck may never become wise. But rather blessed is the man who hear and do. Now we notice again that God stores it up. We'll come to this later. We'll still look at this here in some of the series. God stores, so there's a store, there's a deliberate, God is deliberate about wisdom. That's what I'm just trying to make you see. God is intentional and deliberate about His wisdom. The wisdom of God is not just everywhere. No. No. God is intentional and God is deliberate about His wisdom. He deliberate about it, intentional about it. And what is He intentional and deliberate about? How upright. How up-right. You can separate those words. Not down and wrong. Up and right. We will later look at each of these things. Some are up and wrong. Some are right and down. But it must be up and right. It must be up and right. These are very, very important things. But that is not our focus for today, being upright. Because you will soon understand being upright simply from one simple thing, the fear of God. No matter what anybody becomes, no matter what anybody has, no matter what anybody can, no matter what, no matter what anybody can, no matter what, that's why you see the psalmist praying, "Incline my heart to your fear. Incline my heart to your fear. Direct my heart to your love." The fear of God is the beginning of wisdom. The love of God is the perfection of wisdom. Upright, fear and love. We will look at that much later. But let us try to build, I'm trying to build something. That what brought us here is that from His mouth. That's what I want you to see. That God speaks. So you will remain foolish till you die until you can hear God. You will remain foolish. That is, when we say foolish now from God's point of view. I don't know if you're getting the point. From God's point of view because until He speak, you are not wise. So you remain foolish as far as eternity is concerned, till we die, except He speak to us. If they don't come to us and speak to us, then we will remain, from their perspective, from the perspective of eternity, you will remain foolish all your life. But however, however, look at something, let's go back to where we were coming from. 1 Corinthians, 1 Corinthians, let's go back there quickly. 1 Corinthians chapter 2 that we were considering. Let's go back there. 1 Corinthians 2. Let's go back to that verse 14, 15 that we were looking at. 1 Corinthians chapter 2, verse 14. Are you there? Look at the verse 14. He says, "And we impart this in words, not taught by human wisdom." So which means there is human wisdom. You see it now. So without God, human beings can be wise. That is, they have their own wisdom and God has His own wisdom. That's what I want, I want to make you see. Human beings don't see themselves as foolish. They are wise. It is that wisdom that Proverbs is saying, "Do not be wise in your own eyes." Do you get it? It is that wisdom that Proverbs is saying, "Trust the Lord with all your heart, do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him and then He will direct." He will direct. Do not be wise in your own eyes. So human beings are not foolish in their own eyes. They are not. They are not foolish in their eyes. That's why I tell, when I tell people the wisdom of God that you can never be wise, that's why I said as far as eternity is concerned. There is the wisdom of God, what God calls, when God looks at a man and God say you are wise. It's not what you will look at and you say you are wise. Are you getting the point now? What you will look at in your life and say "Mogbon," I'm wise, is completely different from what God will look at in you and God will say you are wise. For God to describe any man to be wise, God must speak to that man. Because actually, actually, what happens with God's wisdom is that it is God that makes wise. So the wisdom of God, the wisdom of God, is something that God, when God want you to be wise, what does He now do to you? He speaks to you. If God don't want you to be wise, what does God do? He leave you to yourself. So we are seeing something very, very crucial. Something very, very important. That is why, by the Spirit of God, Apostle Paul will say these things, we impart, he says, "And we impart this in words, not taught by human wisdom, but taught by God's Spirit." Because how did it come to them? How did it come to them? It came to them in words. So when they want to do this, how will they give it? They will give it in words. And that's why you will notice, like I tell people, look at the life of Jesus. Look at those that were the closest to Him. How many miracles did He do in their lives? He did so many miracles. He went about doing good, healing all those that were oppressed of the devil. The miracles this, the miracles that. Who are those that were getting it? Multitude. Multitude. But what was He giving to the disciples? Words. That's why I tell people, if you begin to measure who you are in God by material things, you don't understand wisdom. You don't understand wisdom. You will be thinking that, oh, does that mean that we don't need material things? That's another extreme to living. He says these things your Father knows that you have need of them. He knows you have need of them. But do you notice that the focus of Jesus was not these things, the focus was to make them wise? They were never really given miracles, but over time they became workers of miracles. Am I correct? Am I correct? They became workers of miracles. They became workers of miracles. Why? We must understand the person who really gets is the person who was able to possess the Giver and not the gift. I don't know if you understand me. The person who really gets, who really, who really got something, is not the one who got the gift of the Giver. It's the one who got the Giver Himself. Now, because once you can get the Giver, please, is there any gift you will not enjoy? Is there any gift you will not enjoy? There's no gift you will not enjoy. There's no gift you will not enjoy. There's none. And that's why you notice that the Bible says God gives us richly, freely all things to enjoy. He gives us things, things to enjoy. He give us freely things to enjoy. Now, we are journeying somewhere. He says now, now he says, "And we impart this in words, not taught by human wisdom." So we have seen that there is human wisdom and there is God's wisdom. Now, I have explained interpreting spiritual truth to those who are spiritual. Now, the point that I took out of this is what I want you to now see it in the verse 14 clearly. You know, these things, the things that the Spirit, that the Spirit of God teaches. The things that the Spirit of God teaches, it is not something, please note something. Please get something. Please get something. Please get something. Hallelujah. I don't know how much, I was thinking we will finish this place and move to the next text, but we may not leave this place today. We may not leave this place today. Now please look at something. He says now, we have received not the spirit of this world, but the spirit which is from God, that we might understand the things which are freely given to us by God. And we impart this in words, not taught by human wisdom, but taught by the Spirit, interpreting spiritual truth to those who are spiritual. Now, the people who are interpreting spiritual truth, how did they get it? They got it because the Spirit of God did what? He spoke to them. He taught them. Are we correct? Are we correct? Now we said if God don't speak to a man, he can never become wise. As far as eternity is concerned, he will remain foolish. Now, look at something. Let's go back to the verse 14. Look at the verse 14. Are you there? Look at the verse 14. "But the natural person does not receive the things of the spirit of God." What are they to him? They are foolishness to him. He cannot know them because they are spiritually discerned. So except you are spiritual, no matter how much you come to fellowship, you will still die the way you are. If you are not spiritual. What it means is that the things of God, the people, as we come to teach the things of God, as we come to preach the things of God, for those who are outside, how will they come in? How will they come in? They will come in by the Spirit of God. Isn't it? Isn't it? Now look at it. It is by that same Spirit that they came in that they continue in Him. It is by that same Spirit, that thing that brought them in is the same one when we speak, the Spirit also speak in them. It's the same Spirit. That's what they call Christ being formed in them. Christ must be formed in you for you to become like Christ. You cannot become like Christ by head knowledge. It's not possible. No matter how intellectual you are in the things of the Bible, you can't still become like Christ. No. What makes it possible, that's why you can, somebody can be so eloquent with scriptures and yet don't have the mind and the heart of Christ. Because you can become eloquent in scriptures even without God's Spirit by the power of intellectual power. That is you become so vast in the Bible but you don't know God. You don't know Him. You see, the point we are talking about the wisdom of God. We are trying to take a journey to understand certain things. Why it looks like there is so many people inside church, but it looks like we are Christians. Look at that, they are so many pastors. Look at, but we are Christians. We are talking about the wisdom of God. The wisdom of God. The point I'm trying to make you see is this. God comes to you, He speaks to you. God wants to be formed in that brother. That thing that God speaks to you, he cannot receive it. For him to receive it, God must go that way too and work in that brother. So tell me, who is building the kingdom? That's why any man that touches the things of God will become nothing. You cannot hijack it. It's not something you can hijack. He's the only one who is working. I'm talking about the wisdom of God. We can do so many things. We can run and run around. But there is something we don't understand, that the gospel, that's what I will fit on more when we come next Monday, that actually the preaching of the cross is the wisdom of God. This, but I'm just trying to lay foundation on something, something very, very clear. That it is important for us for you to know that no nobody can actually in the sense of God's kingdom build God's kingdom. Nobody can build God's kingdom. God is the only one that can build His kingdom. And He can choose to build His kingdom the way He wants. The wisdom of God. Now, you notice something, that's what I want to close today. 6:19, I should, okay, let me just say something and then try to look at the questions if I can just respond to the question. It says the natural man does not accept the things of God's Spirit, for they are what to him? They are foolishness. Now, what I'm trying to make you see is that the way the things of God comes, when the power of intellect look at it, they are not reasonable. When intellect, intellect, when it looks at the way God's wisdom comes, because when God's wisdom comes, intellect and it, they are opposed, they don't, in fact, they are foolishness to that other person. Now, the reason why that is like that, I will explain later when we come to look at what is the origin of human wisdom and what is the origin, what is the will that drive God's wisdom, the will upon which the vehicle of God's wisdom move, we will see it. And you see the will upon which the vehicle of man's wisdom move, you see that they are completely opposed to themselves. But when we want to leave the matter today so that we can pray, is can we have a deep sense of understanding that God, except You speak to us, we can never be wise. Can you, can you bring that to the place of, you see academically you can be an intellectual, but you may still not be wise. Business, you can be a successful businessman, but you are still not wise. You see, just put everything together. Can you talk to God and say, God, I need You to speak to me. I strongly need that You speak to me. Lord God, that I may be wise. That is the prayer.
