The Wisdom of God (3)

Our Father, indeed wisdom, thanksgiving, honor, power, and might be unto You and You alone. We thank You for Your love. We thank You for Your mercies. We thank You for Your goodness. We thank You for Your grace. We thank You for all who You are. We thank You for all that You are. We bless Your holy name, our Father. We say be Thou exalted, O Lord, in the name of Jesus. Our Father, we gather unto You this evening, being the last Monday in the month of November. Our Father, we are praying that as we look through scriptures again to fellowship together, to encourage one another, particularly as we see the day approaching, Lord our God, meet with us individually, meet with us collectively. Speak to our individual situations. Grant us light and direction in the name of Jesus Christ. O Lord, our eyes are on You. Let nothing prevail against Your purposes for our lives in the name of Jesus Christ. Thank You, Everlasting Father. Blessed be Your holy name, our God. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen. So, we are taking the matter from where we left it last week and we'll take that to some points today and then we'll be taking time to pray. To pray through this matter of the wisdom of God. Being our last Monday that we'll normally take time to pray, we'll create some more time this evening to indeed pray. We have been praying about the matter, but we'll create some more time this evening to indeed pray. Last week we came to look at how the whole matter started in 1 Corinthians 1, from verse 18 where by the Holy Spirit Apostle Paul noted that for the word of the cross seems foolish to those who are in the way to destruction, but to us who are on the way to salvation, it is the power of God. As it says in the holy writings or as the scripture says, what does the scripture say? The scripture says something very, very pointed: "I will destroy the wisdom of the wise, the discernment of the discerning I will thwart." For where is the wise? Where is the scribe? Where are the disputers of this age? Has God not made foolish the wisdom of this world? Then verse 21, where we stopped last week: "For since in the wisdom of God, the world did not know God through wisdom, it pleases God through the foolish things of what we preach to save those who believe." The Old King James says, put it in a way that is very, very pointed. He says, "For after that in the wisdom of God the world by wisdom knew not God, it pleased God by the foolishness of preaching to save them that believe." So, before we move on today, I don't know whether those of us who were part of the Bible study last week have one or two things you want to say before we move on. Brethren who are online, you can also put one or two things online for us to read. If you have something to say, brethren who are here physically, is there anything you want to say? [Speaker 2] Praise God. By the grace of God last week, I was able to understand more and more again that anytime we use human wisdom to deliver the message of the cross, we have robbed the cross of its power. So when we bring in human understanding as the basis of explaining the mystery of the cross, we have robbed the cross of the power and it will be of no effect unto people. Last week I also learned that Paul was very careful because he understood the power of words, not to present the gospel with high-sounding human wisdom or human knowledge. Being a lawyer himself, he knows how to manipulate words, he knows how to bring all the rhymes together or how to arrive at a logical conclusion, which will never bring about the effectiveness of the power of the cross. So he was being careful. That's why he said I didn't come to you with high-sounding words but with power, which is in the cross. And also for me last week, I realized that it is possible to win an argument and you are not on the path of the truth. Because human wisdom can logically bring an argument to a reasonable conclusion, but the truth is that if it is not by the effective power of the cross, it is still not reasonable because human wisdom will always bring about foolishness when it comes to the power of the cross. That's the conclusion. [Speaker 1] Thank you so much. And I didn't notice that there was a question on time last week on the Telegram page. Somebody put a question there. Technical, please help me with that question. It was later after the meeting. I just pray that the person who wrote that question is online. But if the person is not online, maybe what I say now, one of us will try to see type it and put it. You have resent it. Okay, let me see if I can just quickly open that question. Thank you. So that may be the first thing I'll want to quickly attend to. The question go thus. "I have a question sir. A particular pastor and teacher has a knack for making his sermon into wonderful artistic work by playing with words such as rhymes, homonyms, etc. (Pastor Kumuyi, I guess the pastor he's referring to. I guess he meant Pastor Kumuyi normally do this.) And I quite find him interesting. Yes, to a level it shows he has been busy at getting ready for preaching." So what is the question? Maybe the person is trying to ask whether it is right, since you are talking about Paul being careful not to come in with eloquent argument. So he's trying to say that Pastor Kumuyi normally use all kinds of interplay on words to beautify his sermon. So how is that? Is it something that one should continue with or not continue with? I think my response to that is very simple. Eloquence, oratory power, they are natural endowment. Some people are endowed with this natural endowment, while some are not so endowed. If one is endowed with power of speech and eloquence, what we are saying is this: It is important for the person not to have confidence in that eloquence. It is important for the person not to think that it is because I am eloquent, that is why I'll be able to preach the gospel. Rather the person should be careful about that natural endowment so that it does not stand in the way of the power of the cross. But it doesn't necessarily means that natural endowment themselves, they are sin. No. Natural endowments are not sin. It is only like we raised the matter about Paul. Paul himself was an eloquent person. If you go and read his argument when he was facing trial. But he was careful. He said I fear lest... so he was careful to be sure that his bringing of the message is not on the confidence of his natural endowment. I think that is what is very, very important. So whether people seems to be oratory when they are preaching or they seems not to, I don't think that is a major concern. What's a major concern is for everybody to purpose in his heart that whether gifted or not gifted with the power of speech, I must be careful not to make the gospel rest on the power of speech and not on the power of God. I think that is what is important. That's how I want to respond to that. So today, I want to move on a little. And at the same time too, I really want us to take a little time too to pray. So we saw something very well in verse 21. That for since in the wisdom of God, God made this such that the world would not know Him by their wisdom. I want to quickly open that scripture in my multi-translation Bible. 1 Corinthians 1:21. Now, NKJV says, "For since in the wisdom of God, the world through wisdom did not know God, it pleased God through the foolishness of the message preached to save those who believe." NLT: "Since God in His wisdom saw to it that the world would never find Him through human wisdom, He has used our foolish preaching to save all who believe." NIV: "For since in the wisdom of God the world through its wisdom did not know God, God was pleased through the foolishness of what was preached to save those who believe." Amplified: "For while the world with all its earthly wisdom failed to perceive, recognize, and know God by means of its own philosophy, God in His wisdom was pleased through the foolishness of preaching salvation, procured by Christ and to be had through Him, to save those who believe, who cling to and trust Him and rely on him." So we are seeing something that was where we stopped last week. What God did. So in the wisdom of God, God so did it or God so arranged it, God so made it that the more you want to search for God through... the more your confidence is in the power of logic, inferences, philosophical reasoning, the more you think that by the power of intellect you can find God, God has made it such that the more you want to use that, the more you will not find God. That's what God have done. God deliberately did that. When God sees a man who is confident in his ability to reason and think, who is confident in being able to draw logic and deduction, and so he'll be able to deduce and know God, God have made it such that the person will not know God by it. So what will the person know? That becomes a very serious question. So, God, that is what God did in His wisdom. And you'll be wondering, why would God have done that in His wisdom? Why is it that God made it such that the power of intellect, the sagacity of men, the ability to interpret, deduce and deduce things, why is it that God made it that by that ability they should not find God? We are looking at the wisdom of God. Why did God in His wisdom do it that way? God was bringing His wisdom. God made use in His wisdom that okay, what I will do so that people will find Me is that they will never find Me by the engagement of intellect. Even though they will engage Me by intellect, but they will not find Me by that engagement. For them to find Me is not going to be that way. So the question is, why is God doing that? Why did God do that? Now, the Bible now went further to say something that will give us insight into why God did this. The Bible in verse 22 says, "For Jews request a sign and the Greeks seek after wisdom, but we preach Christ crucified, to the Jews a stumbling block, to the Greeks foolishness." Now, I want you to link this to what he said earlier. In 21, he has said that, "For since in the wisdom of God, the world through wisdom did not know God, it pleased God through the foolishness of the message to save those who believe." So the wisdom of God, the power of God is what? Is what in verse 21? He says it pleased God through what? The foolishness of the message preached to save those who believe. So what do you see that God did? What do you see in 21 that God did? God has made it such that what will be used to find God, when you listen to it, it will be foolish. When you look at it and I want to give you a very simple example. A very simple example for you to see that what God did with the gospel is something that God had intended from all eternity. In Numbers 21, we are familiar with that story. We may not go there, it's a very, very popular story. That is the story of the bronze serpent. What happened in the wilderness? They sinned against God. What was their punishment? God sent poisonous snakes to be biting them. When the snake was biting them, what happened to them? They were dying. They realized that they had sinned, they went to Moses. "We have sinned against God, pray to God to take away the serpent." Moses went to God. "God, we realize that we have sinned, please take away the serpent." What did God do? God did not take away the serpent. God told Moses, "Go and do what? Make a bronze serpent, place it on a pole. It will come to pass if the serpent bite anybody, let the person look up, the person will live." Please, is that the way to bring solution to a problem? Who brought the serpent? God. The serpent is what is killing people. What is the solution to it? Take it away! He said, "No, I will not take it away, I will leave it." Because Jesus said, "For as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of Man be lifted up." I want to show you something that there is a relationship between that matter and where we are. I'm going to make you see that it was... it has never been the intention of God that His method must be weak. His method must look weak, foolish and stupid. That have always been the intent of God. Why? By the time we come to the origin of man's wisdom next Monday, you will get what I'm trying to say. You will see why God brings foolish things. Because you must remember that originally, God never wanted man to have knowledge of good and evil. So we are coming back to how we got to where we got to and why God did what He did. But what I want to push further today is that it has always been the mind of God in His eternal wisdom that the method of God, the way of God, how God will do something must look weak, foolish and stupid. It will look like this is not... this is not the best method. And that's why I'm showing you a typical example that snakes were biting people. The person who brought the snake was told, "We have sinned, take away the snakes from us." And the person said, "No," as if He's not the one who brought the snake, I can also take them away. As if the snake is too powerful for Him to take away. Since He was the one who sent those things, why doesn't He just send them away? He said, "No, you see the serpent biting them? Go and do something similar to that serpent. Do something similar. Place it on a pole. The one that is killing them is alive, living and it's poisonous. The one that is to save them is dead." What is the sense? How can a dead thing save a man from a living thing? Now this also explains why many believers could not overcome sin. This matter of the wisdom of God. Because it is the same method. There was serpent, serpent was the problem. God did not take away serpent, rather He brought a dead serpent to save from a living serpent. It is the same method that the world sinned against God and God made Jesus sin. It's the same thing. That what God could have done to save us from sin is to take away sin. God did not take away sin, you can still sin. But He made you to be victorious over sin. Why didn't He just take this one like this? Everything about sin should just go. It is gone, but it is gone away by looking at Jesus. But that's not what I'm trying to look at today, which is victorious Christian living, why many believers are not victorious. Many believers still struggle with sin because they feel that like the Israelites in the wilderness, ordinarily, please try to be frank, if you are standing and a living snake that you know have killed several people in the community... just the sight of snakes makes you to be afraid for most people. Not to talk of the one that you see have killed Uncle this... they told you that when the snake is coming, you don't need to run. All you need to do is just look up. Please, it's not making sense. This is the snake. You either take away the snake or you allow me to run. But he's saying, "No, no, the snake is not your problem. Even if it bites you, just do like this." As you are looking up like this, the venom will go. Now as the snake is approaching you, I want to ask you, I want us to be very practical. When the snake is walking towards your leg, are you likely to just say, "No problem," and you're just looking up? Are you sure you will not also be looking down and be pulling your leg small, small? Because that look wiser than just saying, "No problem, what is it no problem, they said I should look up." And you are looking up at ordinary gold as if they mold together. And you are looking at that thing and you're having confidence that... that looks foolish. That's not wisdom. But that is the method that it pleases God to use to save them. So you discover that when you look at the method and the situation, if you are to be logical, philosophical and calculative, you can never follow God. You will just be asking people, "Are you sure it's God who told you this foolish thing? You think God is foolish? Snake has killed Uncle this, He has killed brother that, the snake is coming, you say no, somebody should make bronze. Is that the way to go about this thing?" Then number two, if it now bite you, you don't need to look for something to put. Now just try it, if you are bitten by something, what is the first thing you do? Do you look away or look towards it? You look at it... but you are told just look up. It is contrary to... it doesn't agree with... it's not natural. But you see, men who chose to be natural can never find God. I'm trying to draw this thing, I'm talking about the wisdom of God. The wisdom of God. That is why he says if you go back to where we started four weeks ago, he says for the natural man cannot know the things of God because they are foolishness to him. That's 1 Corinthians 2 around verse 14. He says, "But the natural man does not receive the things of the Spirit." How can he receive it? It doesn't make sense. If anything bites you and then they say don't look at it, something has bitten you and he say just look away. You will tell the person, "You think I'm a fool? Who won't even look at how deep, who won't even look at...?" If you look at it naturally, if you are walking and something enters into your leg, what do you do? You look towards it. You don't look away from it. Because it's not natural for something to bite you, if mosquito bite you now, you do like this and you are pulling it... ah, they will be asking, "Are you normal? What are you...?" He say, "Mosquito bite me." Ah, kill it. Then you do like this and... that's not... so you find something. What I'm trying to make you see is that Jesus said it is as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, that's what Paul is saying. That see, since God in His wisdom has made this such that by natural way of looking at it, you can never find God. It now pleases God. He has arranged it that for God so loved the world, whoever believe will not perish or have everlasting life. You begin to wonder, who did we sin against? God. Okay, you sin against God. Who said the wages of sin is death? God. Who is taking you back? So which one is that He went to die again? Can't He just forgive the people and tell them to come inside? Is it not Him? Are you understanding me? You have offended me. Which price am I going to pay again to take away your offense from me? It's just to say come and we relate. But you begin to wonder why because God have said the wages of sin is death. He's the one who said so. He's the one who is bounded by it again. Telling you that God is bounded by His word. But in this case, You can let go. It's nothing wrong. He can just say okay, the wages of sin is not death. Must You go through all this suffering? Are you understanding what I'm trying to bring out? You see the more you begin to look at the cross logically, the more you see stupidity. The more you see foolishness. So that that day when that man was telling me that, "See, see, see, listen, you are a father." "Yes," I said. He say, "You're a father?" He say, "Yes, I'm a father." He said, "Look at the stupid thing you just said. Look at..." He said, "You know we all sin in Jesus, we all sin in Adam. And that for all sin through him." He said, "If one of your children, if one of them sin, how many will you beat?" I said, "I'll beat the one that sin." "Okay, now you said Adam sin and all of us are sinners, does that make sense?" He said, "You can see the foolish you just said." He said, "Look, what you want to preach already lack a basis. It lacks a basis. Adam sin is sin for himself. I'm not a sinner." He said, "I'm not a sinner because Adam sin. So please take that out of the argument." He said, "Please just..." And I said, "See, I'm not arguing with you. I'm only telling you the truth." "But how do you prove that truth?" And he said, "What you said is very foolish." You know what I responded? I said, "If you don't believe this foolishness, you will die in your sin." I'm not trying to make it not to look foolish. God already said it is foolish. So why are you trying to make it look sensible? What is your problem? Why are we trying to polish the gospel? Why are we trying to make it look like... let's make it as attractive so they can accept it. Look, what is attractive in what you are saying to those who can use logic? Maybe you can make it attractive to men who cannot reason very well. That is why you end up becoming a motivational speaker. Because the actual truth is that the gospel, for anybody who can think logically, deductively, the philosophers, the scribe, the wise men of this world, you can't save them with the gospel in terms of it trying to make it presentable. What you just need to do is to preach it in its simplicity. Preach it just as it is. And that was why I didn't try to tell that man anything very serious. I say, "Yes, it's foolish, but you see this foolish thing, if you don't believe it, you will die in your sin." That is also the truth. So let him begin to think: foolish thing, die in my sin. If God want to convince him, that truth will convince him. If I begin to think to philosophy, philosophy will not convince him. It will only inform him. And so we need to understand that what bring people to conversion is conviction. And the Bible wants us, please, who convince the world of sin, of righteousness and of judgment? So you have to preach what is foolish for the Holy Spirit to work. That is what it is. The reason why we keep moving away from the gospel to... you see if you enter some churches, we have left the gospel. I mean the... what we are asked to preach is Jesus. We are not asked to begin to be... no, can you just preach Jesus to the lost? Can you just say what Jesus said? Can you just preach Jesus? But you know what we are feeling? We are feeling that just preaching Jesus will no more look reasonable and sensible. We need to... we need to package it. We need to package! If we don't package it, but you see the more we package it, the more we don't give the Holy Spirit a place to work. And so we may end up having in our gathering a lot of informed people, but not transformed people. A lot of informed people, but not people who have been convicted for sin. Who have been convicted by the Holy Spirit. We may end up having such kind of people. And that is what the scripture is trying to make us see in that place that we are reading. That's why he said in verse 20, "For where is the wise? Where are the scribe? Where are the disputers of this age? Has God not made foolish the wisdom of this age? For since in the wisdom of God, the world through wisdom did not know God, it pleased God through the foolishness of the message to preach those to save those who believe." Now look at it. The Jews, who are the Jews? The unbelievers who are Jews. They are not yet believers. But one thing about Jews is what sign will you give me for this? You know Jews normally love sign. They will ask Jesus, "Okay, what sign will You give us to show that You are a prophet?" And Jesus said, "No other sign will be given to this generation except the one that was given by Jonah. As Jonah was in the belly of the earth for three days and three nights, so the Son of Man will be in the belly of the earth for three days and three nights." He didn't give them any special sign. So for the Jews to be convinced, what are they seeking for? Sign. Now for the Greek, who are the Greek of those days? When he was talking about the Greeks, who are the Greeks? The philosophers. You know Greek city-state is the beginning of philosophical teaching. We are talking about people like Aristotle, people like Plato, all of these people, they were the ones that began deep what we call philosophical thinking. In fact, classical theories rest on the philosophical thinking of these ancient fathers that you call Plato and Greek. For them, they are the fathers of modern-day philosophical thinking. Now, Greece is the center of philosophical thinking. So he said the Jews, they request a sign. For them to believe, they are requesting for sign. Give us a sign. The Greek, they seek wisdom. Make the thing sound logical. Make it sound... let's bring some common sense. You don't even need to pray. You don't need to look anywhere. If a snake is coming to you, just run away. Period. You are looking up? Are you not stupid? Say something else about how to be safe from the snake so that we can believe you. Say something better! Or alternatively, tell us to carry our cutlasses, long stick so that as we approach the snake, what do we do? We use the stick to hit it on the head, then snake is dead. You mean with all my intelligence, when I'm not a fool, a poisonous snake that has killed several people in the community is approaching, and all I need to do... do I need to wait for it to bite me? Lord, magnify Jesus over the wickedness and the deceitfulness of men in this nation. Lord, magnify Jesus. Magnify Jesus over the deceitfulness of men, over the wickedness of men. Lord, magnify Jesus. Magnify Jesus. Magnify Jesus. Lord, on one hand we are begging You, magnify Jesus over the wickedness of men, over the deceitfulness of men. Lord, magnify Jesus. And on the other hand, I want you to pray. The Bible says, "Say unto the righteous it shall be well with you." I want you to pray on the other hand that no matter how it turns in this nation, it will be well with them who fear God. No matter how things turn in this nation, no matter how things will turn, it will be well with them who fear God. Oh, you fear God, it will be well with them. The reality is that no matter how the wind blows, mountains don't bow. No matter how the wind blows, mountains don't bow. The Bible says those who trust in the Lord, they shall be like Mount Zion that cannot be moved forever and ever. When people trust the Lord, they become mountains. And no matter how the wind blows, mountains don't bow. I want to pray that it will be well no matter how it turns in Nigeria. It will be well with them who fear God. Thank You, Eternal Father. Blessed be Your holy name, our God. Thank You, Jehovah. Thank You, Jehovah. Thank You, Jehovah. Thank You, Jehovah. Thank You, Jehovah. Thank You, Lord. In Jesus' name we pray. Everlasting Father, we just pray this evening. Just two things. Two things are the burden of our prayer this evening. That Lord, Lord, Lord, You will deliver us from ourselves. Lord, in every way we are holding our glory to a ransom by trying to put the totality of our life into the foolishness of human wisdom and human ability to evaluate, calculate, plan and run things. Lord, we are just begging You this evening: deliver us from ourselves. Lord, everywhere we are holding our glory to ransom, everywhere we are holding our glory to ransom by putting our life into our hands, by putting our life into the compass of human wisdom and plan. Oh Lord, I beg You. Our first burden tonight, our cry tonight is that Lord, deliver us from ourselves. And Lord God, we are praying. It is those who truly trust in the Lord that are like Mount Zion that cannot be moved. So many things are happening around us today. So many things are going around us as a nation and it is looking as if trusting the Lord is not the best way to handle Nigeria situation. Yet, Lord, those who don't trust the Lord cannot become mountains. When the wind blows, it will blow them away. But we know that no matter how the wind blows, mountains don't bow. Oh God, help us Lord, that Lord, our walk with You will be deeper, that our trust in You may be stronger in the name of Jesus. Lord, it is impossible to trust a God we don't know. Lord, that we may know You. Lord, that we may know You. Lord, that we may know You. Lord, cause us to know You. Cause us to know You so that we can trust You, so that we can lean on You. The Bible says it is the people who know their God that will be strong. Oh Lord, that we may know You. Thank You, Eternal Father. Blessed be Your holy name, our God. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen. Our regular activities are: Discipleship class every Monday 5:00 PM, Adolescents and Singles Club every first Saturday of every month at 10:00 AM, Marriage Forum second Saturday of every month at 10:00 AM, Family life seminars, regular school outreaches, and everyday counseling.
