Who is like unto thee, O Lord? Who is like unto thee, O Lord? Among the gods, who is like thee? You are glorious in holiness and fearful in praises, doing wonders. Hallelujah.
Blessed be the name of our God. We thank him again for his mercies and for his grace. We thank him for his love, we thank him for his goodness. We thank him again for this opportunity and privilege again to be in his presence. Another Monday, a time for our discipleship class. A time to learn at his feet, a time to learn in his word, a time to learn from him. And we trust the Lord again that as we gather unto him, it shall be a time of refreshment, it shall be a time of blessing in the name of Jesus Christ.
Last week we were looking at "Kept by Faith." Kept by faith. We considered that and we were able to see that there is a connection between our faith and the power of God. There is an inheritance kept for us, and that inheritance we are preserved by the power of God, but through faith for that inheritance. We concluded last week telling ourselves that the faith that was ushered in us, the faith that is in us, is an overcoming faith. It is not a faith that can be dominated. It is not a faith that can be conquered. It is not a faith that can be prevailed against. Rather, it's a prevailing faith. It's a winning faith. It's a faith that as we saw as recorded with the elders of old, we saw that it was a faith that conquered kingdoms, stopped the mouth of a lion, did several miraculous things. And we are saying that that faith is still available and with us today.
Today, I want to move on to start with us a series, a series of discussion. And the theme or the topic of the series is "We That Are of the Day." We that are of the day. We that are of the day. And I know you'll be looking at that topic and be wondering which direction are we actually going. We that are of the day. If we are of the day, there is a lifestyle that is expected of us that are of the day. We that are of the day. We that are of the day. We that are of the day.
When you look at the scriptures, I want to take us to the book of Thessalonians, 1 Thessalonians chapter 4 into chapter 5. 1 Thessalonians chapter 4 into chapter 5. Let's see that scriptures. We that are of the day. We that are of the day. 1 Thessalonians chapter 4. I'll be taking it from around verse 13. The chapter 4 from around verse 13. The scripture says:
"But I do not want you to be ignorant, brethren, concerning those who have fallen asleep, lest you sorrow as others who have no hope. For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so God will bring with him those who slept in Jesus. For this we say to you by the word of the Lord, that we who are alive and remain until the coming of the Lord will by no means precede those who are asleep. For the Lord himself will descend from heaven with a shout, and with the voice of an archangel, and with the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ will rise first. Then we who are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And thus we shall always be with the Lord. Therefore comfort one another with these things."
Into chapter 5, I'm reading from verse 1. "But concerning the time and the season, brethren, you have no need that I should write you. For you yourself know perfectly that the day of the Lord so comes as a thief in the night. For when they say, 'Peace and safety!' then sudden destruction comes upon them, as labor pain upon a pregnant woman, and they shall not escape. Verse 4: But you, brethren, are not in darkness, so that this day should overtake you as a thief. You are all sons of light and sons of the day. We are not of the night nor of darkness. Therefore let us not sleep, as others do, but let us watch and be sober. For those who sleep, sleep at night, and those who get drunk are drunk at night. But let us who are of the day be sober, putting on the breastplate of faith and love, and as a helmet the hope of salvation. For God did not appoint us to wrath, but to obtain salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ, who died for us, that whether we wake or sleep, we should live together with him."
Praise the Lord. I decided to read the whole of that scripture so that I can build a good background to that which we want to discuss this evening. I said we'll be discussing "We That Are of the Day." We that are of the day. And when you notice that scripture, the scripture that we just read, it talks about they that are of the day and they that are of the night. So I want to begin by saying that when we are talking about the day and the night and they who are of the day and they who are of the night, from this text in 1 Thessalonians chapter 5 that we just read, we notice something from the verse 1.
Let's begin from the chapter 4. In the chapter 4, Apostle Paul was talking about the need for Christians not to sorrow as those who don't have hope. That there is a great difference between those who have hope and those who are hopeless. That anybody who actually is in the Lord, who dies in the Lord, that person only slept, is only sleeping. He slept in the Lord, is to wake up again. So it's not a hopeless situation. But anybody who died outside the Lord, regardless of the status of that person, that person's situation is a situation of hopelessness. That's what we are seeing.
Now, to comfort the believers, the scripture says that we know that those of us who died in the Lord, at the appearing of Jesus, something will happen. Those who are alive will not precede them. Since they went first, they will rise first. And then those who are alive will join them in the sky to be with the Lord. That is the hope. That is why they are not hopeless. Now when the scripture got to chapter 5, the Bible then began to explain about the time and the season. That is when and when these things are going to take place, particularly the coming of the Lord. And when it came to that, the scripture says that concerning the times and the season, brethren, you have no need that I should write you. The time and the season which the father has set for himself. Jesus himself told the disciples in Acts 1:7 that it is not for you to know the time and the season that the father has set aside for himself. But you go, go and keep yourself busy. Occupy till I come. You will receive power when the Holy Spirit come upon you, and then you will go forth being my witness from Jerusalem to Judea, then to Samaria and to the uttermost part of the earth. It is the same thing that the scripture is repeating here. That the time and the season, there is no need to begin to try to do some kind of permutation and combination, trying to guess it's going to be tomorrow, it's going to be next month, it's going to be some few months to come, it's going to be this, it's going to be that. There's no need trying to do that. There's no need getting around that. What is important is for you to know that the father has set that time for his own self. And what is important is to know that when that time comes, as long as we are of the day, that day is not going to take you by surprise.
Now there is now something that he spoke about. He said, "For you yourself knows perfectly well that the day of the Lord comes as a thief in the night. For when they shall say, 'Peace and safety!' then sudden destruction comes upon them as labor pain upon a pregnant woman and they shall not escape." Now talking about the time and the season, the first thing that the scripture introduced to us is that for you yourself knows perfectly well that the day of the Lord come as a thief in the night. For when they shall say peace and safety, then sudden destruction comes upon them as labor pain upon a pregnant woman and they shall not escape. Now, the scripture is drawing something. That concerning the time and the season, the coming of the Lord, it is going to come as a thief in the night. But the scripture is making something clear. He said it will come as a thief in the night for when they shall say peace and safety, then sudden destruction comes upon them as labor pain upon a pregnant woman and they shall not escape. He now said, "But you, brethren, are not in the darkness, so that this day should overtake you as a thief."
Now, the Bible began to describe seemingly two types of people again. In the chapter 4, the Bible talks about from the verse 13, those who have hope and those who are hopeless. Now, in the chapter 4, scripture introduced that what makes those who have hope to have hope is that there is a coming of the Lord to take them home. Now, when the scripture introduced the matter of those who have hope again and the coming of the Lord, the scripture introduced again those who are of the day and those who are of the night.
Our topic is "We That Are of the Day." Now, so the first thing I want to say this evening as we try to connect this Monday with last Monday. Last Monday was about "Kept by Faith." As we try to connect some of these things together, I want you to see that believers who anybody who is of the day, anybody who is of the day, the day of the Lord cannot take that person by surprise. It cannot. We are still going to discuss, talk more about this matter of the day and the night. But the first thing I'm trying to say is that men and women, believers, disciples that are of the day, the day of the Lord can never take them by surprise. It can never take them by surprise. The people that that day will take by surprise are those of the night, those who are in darkness. That's the first thing I want to call your attention to. So it means even though we don't know the time and the season when we'll be brought to take our inheritance, when we'll enter into the inheritance that is prepared for us, even though we don't know the time, the day, the time and the season, I want to make you know something. It is only if your Christian life is not correct that that time and season will take you by surprise. So it looks like a contradiction, but it is not. We don't know the time, we don't know the season, yet it cannot take us by surprise.
How? How? These are the things we want to unfold in 1 Thessalonians chapter 5. And that is why we are looking at the topic "We That Are of the Day." Are you of the day or of the night? As a disciple, are you of the day or you are of the night? Are you a man of the day or you are a man of the night? Are you a woman of the day or a woman of the night? Are you a boy of the day or a boy of the night? Are you a girl of the day or a girl of the night? Where do you stand in this matter? This is a very important thing that we are trying to look at.
Now when you look at that scripture, it says, "But you, brethren, are not in darkness." That is you are not in the night. Are you seeing something? That they are connecting they that are of the night to be those that are in darkness. The Bible is connecting darkness and night. Of course, night and darkness they go together, while light and day go together. Now he said, "So that that day should overtake you as a thief." He said, "You are sons of light and sons of the day." So you see the coming together. So brethren, my first address to you as brethren is that are you of the night or of the day? He said, "But you, brethren." Can we really conclude in our heart? Because the address of Paul here, the address of the Thessalonian church here, is that, "Look, brethren, we are persuaded that you are not of the night. You are not of darkness. You are of the day. You are alive and of the day."
So my first challenge to you as a disciple is that does your life fit into this matter that we are raising? Because when we are talking about our inheritance, when we are talking about meeting with the Lord, the first thing I want you to see is that believers that will meet with the Lord, men and women that will meet with the Lord, boys and girls that will meet with the Lord, children and parents, young and old, rich or poor that will meet with the Lord, are actually people that are of the day. People of the night, they will not meet with the Lord. The situation that will befall those that are of the night is that the day of the Lord will take them by surprise.
That is not a prophecy of doom, but that is the word of the Lord. And that is the reality of what is going to happen. Anybody that is of the night, I make bold to tell you, no matter what your describer, whether they call you brother, sister, pastor, I don't know, reverend, very reverend, bishop, whatever you are addressed as, as long as you are not of the day, I want to announce to you that the day of the Lord, it is going to meet you as a surprise. And it's going to meet you as a day of destruction, not a day of mercy, not a day of rejoicing, not a day of peace. It can never be well with any man that is not of the day. So the first matter I'm raising with you about this topic is that the Bible say Paul in addressing the church at this time, he said brethren, but you are not of darkness. We know you're not of the night. We know you are sons of light and of the day. You are not of the night nor of darkness. And I pray may that scripture apply to our life. May it apply to you and me that we are not of the night, that we are not of darkness, that we are children of light and of the day in the name of Jesus Christ.
Now, I want to move a little further to the verse 6. He said because we are not of the night, we are not of darkness. Some instructions came up. He said therefore don't let us therefore let us not sleep as others do, but let us watch and be sober. Now something is coming out from this scripture, that one thing that is about the night is that the night or darkness is a time of sleep. Are you understanding me at all? You see one thing about night, one thing about darkness, he says therefore let us not sleep as others do. The first matter that is coming about the matter of darkness is the matter of sleep. Something that is coming about the matter of the night is the matter of sleep. He said we should not sleep. It means one way to know men of the night and men of darkness, one thing that divides men of the day from men of the night, one thing that divides we that are of the day from those who are of the night is the matter of sleep.
And let me amplify something further. The Bible was describing something, and I think I've make mention of this before in some of our messages, earlier teachings. I can't remember which of the topic now, but I know I've said something around this before. On the day of Pentecost when the Holy Spirit came upon the believers and they began to speak in tongues and everybody around them began to hear their language and they're wondering how can these Galileans be speaking all other languages? And people began to wonder, and then some mocking them said, "These people are drunk. Don't mind them. They are drunk men." One thing I must just tell you, just as a way of comment, is that till Jesus will come there will be mockers. Till Jesus will come, there will be men who will always mock spiritual thing. So if if you are somebody who is not ready to be laughed at, if you are not somebody somebody that always want to belong, somebody who cannot endure insult and shame and ridicule of people, honestly you cannot last. There will always be mockers. There will always be people who will make caricature spiritual thing. They'll say what's wrong with them, are you doing abbey? They will always laugh. You know, they will laugh with the way you pray. What are you pray, what is it that? They will laugh about. They will always have something to laugh about. There will always be men like that till Jesus will come. Please note that.
And I'm ready to face all kinds of things. But you see as they were mocking, Peter said something. Peter said, "We are not drunk. Rather, this is the fulfillment of the prophecy of Joel, that it shall come to pass in the last days." Although Joel said it will come to pass afterward, that's Joel 2:28. He said come to pass afterward. But Peter by the spirit of God took that statement and said that afterward means the latter days, the end time. It will come to pass later towards the end. And that is why you notice that the apostles were even thinking that Jesus will come at their own time. It was much more later that Apostle Paul by the spirit of the Lord again saw another latter end. He now told Timothy that look, in the latter time. So we are looking at two latter.
The first latter or the latter days, the first end of the day began at the day of Pentecost. So when you are talking about the end of the day, that is when you look at all that God is doing right now, we are no more in the morning. We are no more in the afternoon. We are not even in the evening. In the agenda of all that God is doing, we already in the night. The night started on the day of Pentecost. Now night started at Pentecost. And if I'm to illustrate that to you further like I did earlier, you know when you say night, night is in categories. 6:30, quarter to 7, 7:00 PM. Once it is relatively dark, what do people say? Good night. It's already night. But you know that night is what? Is early part of the night. At that time nobody's really afraid. Nobody really sleep around that time generally. Other people are returning from offices, people are getting those who are religious are coming from churches that evening, they're coming from their fellowship, like we're having one now around that night quarter to 7, 7:00 will be going home. Something like that. But night has started.
8:00 is also night. 9:00 is night. 10:00 is night. 11:00 is night. 12:00 is the midnight, the wee wee hour. Now what I'm trying to say is that if we say night began at Pentecost, so we said Pentecost, the day of Pentecost is like 7:00 PM in the program of God. It's like 7:00 PM. So from that day of Pentecost you can begin to look at it. Paul now said there's another latter time. So that is late hour of the night. Perilous time shall come. Evil men will wax worse and worse. And what are we seeing around us today? Do you know that even though we don't know the time and season, around 7:00 PM you may not expect a lot of crime. Everybody feel relaxed. But when starting getting to 8:00, 9:00, 10:00, people, everybody starts locking up, locking their gate, locking their door. Because everybody's expecting that evil men, wicked men will start operation. When it gets to around 12:00, you know some will be sleeping. Men, wicked men, they can perfect more thing. Like at that time you don't find much people outside again. Are you understanding I'm talking about the night? The Bible says those who sleep sleep in the night. What I'm trying to make you understand is that this period that we are in, this period in the things of God, in the scheme of all that God is doing, is a time when evil men are waxing worse and worse. And it's also a time that men are sleeping.
The period we are in right now, but note that the Bible says those who sleep sleep in the night. In the scheme of things ordinarily, this period that we are in is a period that promote sleep. It's a time that look, I want to sleep, let me sleep. And it's also a time that wickedness is taking alarming dimension. And I know you know that in society. You will see the way sin, wickedness, abomination, they are taking dimensions that people are saying we have not seen this before. And let me tell you, it is not going to get any better. The Bible says they will wax worse and worse. We are still going to see things that are more frightening than what we are seeing now. That is the truth of it. It's not a prophecy of doom, that's the reality of it. Things are not going to get better. As we move more and more into the night, you know it gets deadlier. It gets deadlier, deadlier and deadlier. And the night too is a time that people want to sleep. But the Bible is talking about the children of the day and the children of light. You see so the people who actually sleep, who will sleep in this night, are those who are of the night. Those who are not of the night, those who are of the day, even in this night, even this period that we are in that is promoting sleep and wickedness, those who are of the day, they will not sleep. They will be watchful and they will be sober.
So one thing I'm trying to make you understand is that this period that we are in is a period, is a period that ordinarily if you want to sleep it is allowed. It is allowed. If you want to sleep, society seem to say sleep. The church may be telling you you can sleep or there's it's night now. There are look after all it is night. There's nothing wrong about sleeping. Have you not heard when men say making those types of statement: "Oh this is Nigeria. We look, if this whole thing is global, there is look you better if you cannot beat them you join them. See if you are child look you will not just make it in life." It is a time that sleep. For example, look at the situation of civil servant generally today. Salaries are not paid generally. What is that thing telling men to do? Is it not an encouragement to steal? Not an encouragement and when somebody when somebody goes ahead and you know and do some sharp things in the office to make money, what will he say? What will he say? "Look look look, am I going to die? Will I not eat when government is not paying my salaries? Then what do you want me to do? Will I not find a way of escape? Let them pay my salaries whether I will be like this again." Are you understanding me at all? There are justifications for evil. There are reasons why we can continue with wickedness. When you tell a girl now why are you dressing abbey? If everybody not doing it? That is what is in vogue now, don't you know? There are justification for evil. I mean those who want to sleep, there are permissions, there are things permitting it, there are things allowing it because ordinarily are we not supposed to sleep in the night? We're supposed to sleep. So when we sleep, what have we done wrong?
Today there is a look, marriages are not stable, what is the essence of even being in marriage? Are you following me? Hey look! even parents themselves if they cannot meet our need, let us do all kinds of things to make money. And then the children also go and do any kind of thing to make the money. They say look my parents could not pay my school fees, I have to do something to what I'm trying to make you understand is that it is night and there are diverse justification for why men should sleep. That is the situation that we are in today. That's the situation. You know one time, you know I was just something happened recently. And some some of the the authority was trying to correct an issue. And we we just noticed generally, I don't know whether you have noticed that. That you know one time when you say Yahoo, Yahoo plus, Yahoo this, it was not something that was celebrated. People look at them as outlaws, as children with subcultural behavior. But today do you notice what is going on? Do you notice what's going on? Do you see how it is not really a shameful thing or something something unusual? Those who do those things now they celebrate themselves, they move round, they want they want to be known as that. Are you understanding me? We are in the night. And sometimes even children who are not like them begin to envy them. "Miss you want to drive my own car, look at all these young young boys." Are you understanding me at all? It is the night. And you begin to see other justifications for extramarital relationship. A woman will say, "Look how do I feed my family? Director is telling me to go out with him. And then you know 100,000, 20,000 comes from that night I spent with him. But at least with that I could take care of my children. Oh you know it is just the situation." Yes it is the situation, it is a situation of the night.
I'm only trying to make you understand something: Are you of the day or of the night? Because where we are today is a situation, the prevailing situation around us, the prevailing event around us, the things happening in the nation, the things happening globally. What you don't understand is that the earth had been programmed to sink and nothing can keep it from sinking. It is going gradually but steadily to perdition. And as it goes on and on to that, enter more and more into the deadness of the night, and at a point what Jesus will eventually appear, things are not going to reverse. Things are not going to roll themselves backward. It will be going steadily towards that. More and more into the night, into the night, wickedness abounding. More and more people will be sleeping. You know by 10:00 PM more people will still be awake. By 11:00 more will join the sleep. By 12:00 midnight more will have joined that sleep. By 1:00 AM very few will be awake. By 2:00, as you go more and more into the night, the number of men that will be awake will be very very few. It will remain just the watchmen.
These are things you need to note as a believer. That is why you notice that the Bible says you are not, you are sons of light and sons of the day. We are not of the night. Even though the circumstance around us is night, we are not of the night. The situation around us is night but we are not of the night. We are not. He says we are not of the night nor of darkness. What are we told? What's the first instruction? He says therefore don't let us sleep. The first thing about the night is justification for evil. Sleep. Sleep is not the same thing as death. But you know there is a relationship between sleep and death. While sleep is a temporary death, death is a permanent sleep. So why certain things are not seen in themselves, they are the things that give room for sin to prevail. And one of those things today, one sign of sleep today in our society is justification for wrong.
There are diverse justification. I remember speaking with one young man who who said there was one free thing they saw on MTN, and I don't know whether they said MTN MTN, I don't know so much of this computer languages, but something like there was a crack in their security or there was a loophole. And that loophole was exploited. And people were getting recharge card. And people could get recharge card of 7,000, 10,000, 20,000. And the young man also join to connect. And then we were I was just discussing with him. I said young man, why did you join this? He said no, it was I they just told me. And but I said but do you think you need to join? He said sir, you see the point is that you know it was available. It was available and I did not even know that that was that it was that their security became porous. But I just saw everybody getting 10,000, this that from MTN and I thought it was free. I was later I also okay. When you now know that it was stolen, what did you do? He said sir, it was already on my phone. So what am I trying to explain to you? Justification for wrong.
That is what we call sleep. Sleep. I was speaking somewhere and a lady came up later to see me for counsel. And when she walked in she just explained how that her parents annoyed her and because of that annoyance she said sir you see actually I'm not somebody like that but I wanted to prove a point. And so the lady, her parents annoyed her and so because of that she went in a relationship with one young man like that and then went and they were fornicating. Because after she said she did not actually wanted to fornicate, it was just that she wanted to be away from her parents. But it ended up that it happened that way and now she's sorry about it, she wants to make her way right with God. I simply told her, I said your first problem was that you slept. You thought the wrong of your parents is a reason why you can be wrong. So that was the beginning of your problem, you slept. And that is what I first want you to see. The first thing the Bible warns us about is don't let us sleep. Don't let us begin to raise justification for wrong. Don't let us begin to think that because something is like this and so I should. There is no justification for evil.
Once you begin to raise justification for evil, then you are sleeping. Very soon you will do evil. You know what will happen? That is now death. When you do the evil, that is the death. That is the death. But the first thing about evil is sleep. And so what I want to tell you this evening as we try to bring this meeting to a close is where do you stand in this matter? Where are you? Where are you? Yes, the truth is that this times that we are in is a time of the night. It is the perilous time. It is not even the beginning of the night, it's a later part of the night. The night began at Pentecost. So more people have people began to sleep from Pentecost. They have been sleeping, sleeping, sleeping and more people are joining the sleep. Now I don't know where we are, whether we are at 11:00 PM or 12:00 midnight. I don't know where we are in the program of God. God knows his own program. But I want you to know this as I conclude is the deeper into the night the closer to the beginning of the dawn. That is one thing you should know.
Suddenly it will be dawn, the Lord will appear in the star. The deeper into the night, the more people sleep, the more it is okay let us sleep. The more the number of men who sleep, the more it is increasing. We are also getting closer and closer to the beginning of another day, the appearance of the Lord. What I'm trying to make also make you understand is that the coming of the Lord draws near. As it draws near, that is what Jesus put in another way in Matthew 24:12. He said because iniquity will abound, what did he say? The love of many will wax cold. So iniquity will be abounding. The love of many will be waxing cold. But he that endure to the end shall be saved. So as we go deeper and deeper into the night and more people are sleeping, we are also getting closer to the beginning of another day, the appearance of the Lord. Brethren, I want to stop here today. I'll pick this matter again next week by the grace of God. But my question to you is are you of the day or of the night? Number two: Are you asleep or you are awake? Look at the way you are living your life. Are you asleep or you are awake? Are you asleep or you are awake? Where are you in all of this matter? Wherever you are this evening, our brethren who are physically here and those online, I want you to begin to pray. Talk to the Lord. And talking to the Lord this evening is making a decision. Deciding, deciding in your heart, making a decision, deciding something, deciding within you, deciding within you: I will not sleep. Number two, I will not be of the night. I am not, I am not darkness and I am not of the night. Even though it is it is it is evident the prevailing circumstance is giving room for sleep because we are getting more and more into the night, I will stay awake. I will stay awake. I will be among the watchmen. I will not sleep. I will not sleep. O Lord God Almighty, fill me with the knowledge of your will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding, so that I may walk worthy of you in every way pleasing. Lord, fill me with the knowledge of your will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding, that I may walk worthy of you in every way pleasing, fruitful in every good works and increasing in your knowledge. Lord, fill me with the knowledge of your will so that I can walk worthy of you. I can walk worthy of you. There must not be justification for evil, for wrong.
